Invercargill is the southernmost, westernmost and second windiest city in New Zealand. It has interesting weather conditions with a yearly mean temperature of just under 10°C, 16 hours of sun per day in summer and views of the southern lights. The city's proximity to a harbour, bays and the ocean means there are a multitude of nearby kiting locations.

Closest to Invercargill is Oreti Beach, which is best in a northwest wind. South of the city, Bluff Harbour/Awarua Bay offers plenty of flat water, with long white sand bars and suitable kiting conditions in most wind directions. Large waves can be found out west near Riverton, where you may even encounter some Hector's dolphins. Timing it right with a southwest swell and westerly winds can result in some great freestyle sessions.
