Raglan’s harbour stretches twelve kilometres inland from the entrance and is mostly less than two kilometres wide. It averages about 250 kiting days a year with either flat water or waves and the wind is usually strong and blowing from the west or south west.

Even in light winds kitesurfing is still achievable due to strong tidal movement of about four to eight knots, but care needs to be taken when riding the outgoing tide. The current can also make it unusually easy to go upwind but difficult to go downwind. Keep an eye out for surfers at Whale Bay and Manu Point as the large waves make it a popular spot.
