Hi Gavin

Firstly, a big congratualtions to you and your wife, Charlotte on your large impending bump that will no doubt have a largely influential start into the kiting world on its journey. Well Done!

And good luck representing NZ at the Luderitz Speed Challenge in Africa. Such an amazing and beautiful place, and Luderitz a very windy part of the country.

From the KiteForum crew, ride hard and do your best. B)

P.S Keep us posted on your progress. Really enjoy reading about the speeds you are getting in your training runs. You can upload photo's easily at in the photo section (http://www.kiteforum.co.nz/kitephotos ) or you can link to video's uploaded into YouTube, Vimeo etc in the video section. I have a 10m but so far have only used it once in the buggy. Amazing turning speed. Hopefully will get it out on the water
sometime soon.

Conrad,
everythings cool round here dude. No real damage , jus a wee bit extra driftwood on the high tide line.#
Plenty of flooded roads and fields though.
When the wind kicks in again i got my eyes on a couple of fields that are asking to be kitesurfed. Mmmm , jumping fences......schweet!!

Another good training session yesterday:
PB for average speed(average of 5 fastest 10 second runs)
Stoked with 2 x 50+ runs and new PB for 5 best ave... very gusty day and the wind angle made for a difficult course... centre strut bladder on my Rally 10m blew out sometime early in the day so all runs were on a 2 strut kite... flew fine, what an awesome kite! Winds 26 to 38 knots.
Average speed 49.91 knots ( 50.93 50.03 49.76 49.56 49.26 )
Max. GPS (display) 55.53 knots
Max. 2 sec. (software) 55.01 knots
100 m run 54.08 knots
250 m run 50.93 knots

Cheers Tim,
Kited 6 out of 6 Days i was in attendance.
Spent alot of time testing the new 2011 Ozone Depower Foils with my Ozone Team mates Olly B, Torrin, Dan Joblin and the man himself Matt Taggart.
The new Frenzy is absolutely incredible! Pumped up on a massive batch of steroids from the 2010 model its hugely improved in all aspects.
I especially loved the turning & loop speed of the 11m which was as fast if not faster than the 2010 9m. It was smooth and way more stable than previous years, promoting confidence for those big airs off the slopes. Love it!!
Also super impressed with the 13m. Turn speed was awesome for a foil of its size and its light wind capabilities were unbelieveable. The only kite flying and still hauling us along in the near 3 knot winds on one particular day. Its the Zephyr of the snow!!

Great to make new friends on the NZ kite scene (my first event apart from the moose last year)and awesome to witness the mad skills of some crazy Kiwi riders.

STOKED and still amping now!!

Cheers guys

had another norwester on the beach so i could hammer the length of the beach...

super sweet. but the baby head sized rocks got me and resulted in a unintended step off at speed... luckily i always carry the 6m access in the back pack and that took most the impact. those baby heads still hirt like hell.

Wind started out around 15-16 knots so i hauled out the 10 manta and wanged along buy the end of the session i thought "oh we are getting powered now" a quick check on the net later revealed the wind peaked at 25 knots towards the end of my session. ... still the monster board was holding the mighty manta at 25 knots... good times.

any way as stated above 70km in distance, 27kph ave 53kph max.

not flash stats for a buggy but respectable on the board.

I tried to buy the one Craig had on the ultralight at the Blue balls last year. He wouldn't sell it as they only had one.

I quite like the old trailing links. Might be one somewhere in a shed.

I finally got out with my new Composite axle on the back. I have had it in the house nearly 3 weeks. I had it on the buggy last weekend but I was hiding from the weather with a raging cold and then yesterday I didn't quite get there. Today it finally happened and wow it was a great. Not just the axle but the ride and the wind and the sand and I got to beat on some blokarters. Fathers day is a fine tradition but even better when you get a great ride in.

Back to the axle. Its not 50 times better and I would hate to quantify it but it is simply better than my old hard axle. I spent a lot of today running over hoof prints and a bit of time on corrugations. My teeth did not get rattled in their sockets and It did not step out so much. On a few of the good runs it felt like I was drifting/floating but I wasn't because I was going forward not sideways.
I have a feeling there is no going back now.

well, i honestly believe that if your to old for kitesurfing you need to take up buggying, i must add however, that one of the most inspiring things about kitesurfing is that old guys still continue to rock...
thats one of the things i personaly love about the sport, i know iv still got decades to go with it before im done, coming from a mountainbiking background i know that if you wish to be even half comitted to it you have to bee willing to take the knocks, so i took up buggying instead..
seriusly, im not kidding.... 5 years go when i came to NZ i was still i mountainbiker, hadnt touched a kite and i knew my days in mtb were fading as i just diddnt bounce enuff (im 30)
i took up kiting and havnt looked back...mountain biking started to hurt to much.
buggying is not as 3D as kitesuring, but you can go hellish fast and still be well within your comfort zone..
your an oldschool kiter man,
you will be fine...the hard knocks are just there to remind you whose boss...you will recover enuff to give him the finger every now an again.

dr, watson....i have my notebook...
and im going to the beach tomorrow with flags and my racing underpants on, if anybody wants to join me ill be their from 10am

sadly i never found my hat, i grievd for a good week about it and still look under the seat in the van just to make sure its not their, i think it must have fallen out of my jumper on the way up the sandhill.

it was my best hat, it made me very sad.

I put together a short video taken from my last few sessions in and around Auckland. Finally made it up to the South Head lagoons (after 7 years kiting). Pretty epic spot...

Will be doing a few more videos over the summer of other riders around the place to show case the talent in NZ. Will load them here as they are made.

Cheers

There are allot of old kites out there.. many of them old & dangerous.
Not only are they a potential hazard to any un-educated "wanna kiter" but they are potentially the landfill of the future!
We are forming a non-profit kite recycling program, many parts of old kites can be re-used by people with the right needs or knowledge. The components of the kite can be re-used for many things, more than just the obvious re-use of lines or parts of kite panels for repairs etc., many items can be recycled.. for example;

The kite fabric can be used for bags/ clothing etc.
The bladder can be sent for recycling, bridal pulleys can be re-used
Damaged lines can still be used in clothing or countless other uses.

The list goes on!

So if you are interested in sustainability, recycling, seeing your old equipment go another round or just getting that old crap out of your garage contact us!
We may be able to help with freight costs and/or pickup, and if parts of your kite go on to be a significant part of a new kite you may score some cash!

Any proceeds will go back into the kite community in ways such as Safety signage at beaches etc.

Hey Johnnie.

What we really need you to do is hold the notebook before and after the moose. These lads are always building buggies. We need them to get into the habit of racing them. the way to do that is really simple. Get the flags out. Shout go and write down the results.
Once they have developed a habit of racing then we can get somewhere. Just building new buggies all the time is not really getting us anywhere.

Perrin has some flags. Wayne has some flags, I am sure you have something that you can use to mark a course.

Any course will do. Just get them to ride it.

should? have already! it caused some healthy debate amongst the hardcore buggiers that just thought it was wrong! i can hold my own against standard bugs, but the super competative wide axle blokes with stupidly high aspect race kites are hard to beat on the board! buggers go faster upwind and downwind.

ps thats about the average age of kitesurfers down here! best you move to the naki and you might even feel abit on the young side!

pss i'm planning to hold a buggy/board race. since i'll be designing the course the odds will be stacked in my favour! shh don't tell the buggiers but there'l be section that you'll have to jump over or do a long downwind/upwind tack! that should sort those pesky buggiers with theres high aspect low lift kites!!

hahaha evil laugh! maybe a river crossing or 2.... boulder section. stop, get out make a sand castle get back in... that sort of stuff.

Last night 2 boards were stolen out of my car, parked in the driveway in Bayswater:

2010 Underground STYX 128 (white/grey)

and

2009 Underground FLX 135 (red) in bright orange custom board bag

They both have / had a Wings & Waves sticker which is rectangular and clear with yellow graphics on them.

Can you please all keep an eye out for these boards?! I bet they will show up on trademe or at a cash converter, or maybe someone will try to sell them to a shop.

THANK YOU.

hey welly. i'm a man of dh mtbing turn landboarder/kitesurfer. infact i still mtb but backed off from hardcore dh to allmountain style riding. Just got back from the french alps for a week of hard core mountain riding!. did the mega avalanche track (not the race) and that was super cool.

anyway back to kites.

Wellington it self is pretty hard core for land kiting theres very little open spots. lyall bay and petone are places to go but its very tight and you could get dragged into power lines, trees, buses etc. I suggest you head to waikane for further up to Butch in Foxton for your first few forays into kiting again.

start back with a 4m size 4 line kite, a blade is good but generally pretty expensive in nz. as 50 says peter lynn and or ozone are represented well in nz.

I also state that you should look at depower after you get your hand in aswell.

Also look as kitesurfing too. in wellington itself theres more kitesurfing opportunities that landkiting. But if your prepaired to make the journey to waikanie and north the beaches there are supreme for land based tom foolery.

in nz check out peter lynn becaues of the price point, flexifoil still make very good kites see there web site. BUT by far the best way to go is a de-power kite, ozone! bigger wind range and a lot more useable on a board.

Hi guys,

When I say "new" I've been here almost a year :) So not so new but anyway.. used to fly back home in the UK a few years back and then sold up when other activities (downhill mountainboarding) took up too much of my time. Anyway, being a few years older and fed up of breaking myself, and being in a pretty windy city, I'd like to get back into kiting. I used to fly a 4m Flexifoil Blade 2 (they're probably onto blade 3 or 4 by now?!) which I loved, and I also had a little 1 metre pocketable kite which was quite a bit of fun. I dabbled with landboarding and it's something I plan to get into again but would just like to start by getting myself dragged around a field until funds allow a mountainboard!

So what's available these days? It has been quite a few years since I flew and while I reckon flying a kite is like riding a bike (minus the handlebars, wheels and brakes etc.) so not concerned about being able to pick it up again but more interested in what is the current recommended kite in the 4m blade-type range?

Cheers guys!

Welly

i need abit more wind say 18 knots for some faster speed and some bigger jumps. at 12 knots i'd have to really crank as fast as i could, swing the kite back quite far and jump. it meant i wasn't landing with much foward momentum. But still it put a huge grin on my face. theres something about landkiting that i find extra special over kitesurfing!

Gannet the go pro is a sweet sweet tool and robust as hell. i slammed mine into the rear tire of my mtb at 50kph. the result? a small scratch on the lense. buy a new lense for $20 and its all go.

i created that vid at about half the quality of the actual gopro quality. 235mb for 5 mins!.

16mins per gb!

So yourl need masses of memory at processing power on your pc to store and edit the footage

we havent raced since blueballs, raglan race in jan and moose meet 2009, cant remember when the previous one was. unless its a special weekend Perrin is only available on sundays, and often the weather doesnt play ball :) . we have had the most successful one off races in NE winds and id have to say those have been very few this year so far. i was focused on building racing buggies for a while, ironically i have not ever raced with one in a full blown event, hehe. i raced with my modded PL buggies in both previous events. currently much effort is going into building another buggy hopefully to have a run at the moose. next few weeks are planned out inc the static kite day and jazz band on the 12th sept at takapuna so i guess it might be the moose before i race again. still it only takes 2 to have a fun race :)

Hey Bros here's my first ever attempt at uploading a video to the web.

Its also my first ever editing attempt. So go easy on me!

This is a nice cruizy session on the beach. Wind is about 12knots. I'm flying the 10m manta II. Cruizing along around 40 - 45kph, throwing the occasional jump. The log jump is amusing at 2mins as is riding the rocks at 3 mins. If you check out the stuff i ride past and over your'l see why I use monster tyres.

gurner? i learn't my skill by trial and error.... mainly error. hehehe

ps i don't mind dogs chasing me. i haven't been bit yet. i think if you talk to them normally or without fear they think here's something to be chased rather than eaten. Also my board would snap the legs of the strongest dog so if one does come a chewen i'll just mow em down.

ps Al I've got a vid finished too. it'l be my virginal first video upload to the interweb. hopefully i'll be able to upload tomorrow.

wind was onshore which happens about 6 times a year so i could cruise the length of the beach.

However, I can't imagine listening to music while sailing.

Whatever happened to just enjoying the sound of the wind and waves???

heh its mike. Haapai is great. Sally and Dave will look after you. You can kite straight from Matafonua I drift launched into the channel and from the lodge you have a huge playground its mostly deep water but a few coral heads at low tide. You an also kite at the causeway best on a high tide. At the other end of the island from Matafonua you can walk across the coral to a deserted island with great sandy beach thats good fun. Take bigger kites as with the humidity and heat whats seems high wind isnt as dense. There is kiwi beer and wine good price so wouldnt take any. The local currency for Dave and sally is fishing magazines womans mags and pineaplle lumps. If you take a memory stick dave has great camera and will take pics for you. Give us a ring if you wnat to know more 021995682

well i'm in the naki so most of my landboarding takes place down here. when i'm in auckland i usually hit up muriwai the moose or orewa on the landboard. i haven't tried bastion. but a standing wave sounds like fun.

i don't mind high wind landboarding. i have land kites good for 35-40 knots. my monster board is stable indeed. but i'm not a free styler. i'm more into speed distance and old school floaty jumps. kiting the length of muriwai beach has to be one of the highlights of my short kiting life.

as for land v water. i head for the water in a cross shore and the land on an onshore. in thruth i still favour the land.....

To those grommets who are into their tunes, I recently brought a waterproof MP3 player made by speedo (Aquabeat, 1gb of musical goodness, supposedly completely waterproof up to three metres including earbuds)thus enabling the enjoyment of tasty jams on the water. I must say, very impressed with sound quality, Though I havnt yet had the chance to use it in anger. The concept has me wondering though, there must be other music addicts out there, what do other people listen to before, after (during???) a session??

maybe abit of manson or metallica, for the phsyche up? or perhaps abit of reggae/dub? or even some dirty old drum and base/house?

Whats your flavour?

no i'm on a landboard on the land, not in a buggy. So i'm standing up. similar to kitesurfing. powered landboarding is actually harder on the body than powered kitesurfing. on the land the waist harness just kills me. but i can use the ozone harness for hours.

on a side note i find the ozone climbing style harnes doesn't give as much back support as the waist harness. its thinner. but it does pull from a different spot which may be good for you?

Whats causing the pain? the fact that its riding up? or are you screwing your lower back and abs due to heaps of air time and dangling under the kite. if its due to dangling then i think the seat style or climbing style will help.

With all of your whining you are starting to sound like an old man! Yet I have seen you out there and only hope to come close to pulling some of the tricks that you do!

Have you tried a short harness? It shifts the weight lower like a seat harness, but doesn't feel like a nappy :)

Make sure you wear a pair of shorts/lycra or something underneath as the leg straps can rub bare skin a bit - but I think it might be what you are looking for.

I don't mind the waist harness on the water as the kite is lower generally. I don't get the break my ribs feeling.

on land the kite is generally higher for a number of reasons. because of that the waist harness tries to break my ribs. i need to use a non rib breaking harness on the land.

you could also consider an ozone xc snow kiting harness if your looking at climbing style. the ozones harness is like a clibing harness but with more padding on the legs and back.

i use the ozone harness on the land and a waist on the water. Cog is abit different but only takes a session or 2 to get used. to.

advantages. never ever rides up.

disatvantages. set it up wrong and there'l be abit of ball squeeze going on. no loop to attach the safety to.

ps i've never used it in the water.

to sit or stand, that is the question. yes its been asked b4, weve all had our 2 cents worth but its diffrent this time, cause its my problem now. my back has been complaining most resently about my waist harness, although the alturitives arnt good so far as i can tell, a seat harness, a nappy 4 gods sake, no i dont likem not just because the cog is too high and ur heads likley to land on terra firma b4 ur feet, its just cause threr bulky and dont look good. but the awnser came from my dear ole mate at kiteworks, perrin. hes sugested a climbing harness, its light, cheep, its somwhere inbetween both styls, so far as cog, and it can fit under my boardies so ill still look casual on the beach, not like some spaceman lookin 4 ground control, lov'n'peace johnie.

Moving to Wellington from Rotorua end of next month, and need some help. Trying to find a flat, but got no idea which areas in Wellington I should be looking at. Want to be close enough to the coast so that I can go for a kite, but not miles away from the city, as well as it being a nice area on the public transport route. Any help would be really great!

Cheers

Mike F went last year and got some awesome kiting in.
Work pressures meant I couldn't go this year, but for sure take your gear - and then write back and tell us all how great it was :)

i have been catching up on the discussion.. whew .. I just realized something. Its really cool to watch the leading link concept evolve and be customized by others too. Ill look forward to riding your mk9 version of the leading link Al :) . I wish plummet would make a buggy, i know it would be cool he just needs to grow up /older first hehe. Gene , i have had very poor results from the bigfoot leading link on the bike rims so far , it wasnt made for the job.. sure but im going to have to work out something new to handle the super hard tyres, now they are down from 42! psi it should be a bit better haha.

just noticed something cool about the xx apex racer that is going into my next buggy, ironically it was anyway but i have just realized its already there on the apex i just started my evolution a few years later :)

dont think moving the axle back is a remedy, it just means my fork has a setting that isnt tuned.
also i wanted the axle to be where it is for handling reasons, id like to reduce the headangle but thats about if for fork tuning, the handling is based on my v-max angles with the bigfoots on..thats where all the measurments for the forks came from an im gonna stick with it because its soooo sweet..
im gonna go with my spring theory, i dont want to make anything firmer or stiffer, the fork is so supple that to change this would be sacralige...
i think i might have to make some airo blades for the fork legs, that way i can hide the springs ;)

Hey All

Going over to Tonga to get away from this wet weather and plan on spending a couple days on Ha'apai Island. Is it worth taking my gear over? Been looking at the Guru and it has been saying anything from 5-->18 knots Easterly. Any specific spots on the island or around Tonga you would recommend?

Thanks so much

In NZ we have the luxury of an abundance of beach space and few people which makes kiting great. However, occasionally, we bunch up in on-shore winds and also for a variety of other valid reasons. In times like these we need to be aware of when we're pushing someone into the beach and/or another kiter loitering and turn away to prevent an on-beach collision or worse a kite to kite collision

A little awareness is all that is required for us all to enjoy the same section of water

This is not a rant just a nudge to remind people to be courteous

See you on the water!

Looking at this you have the minimum trail and the largest load thru leverage on the elastomers. This and the result of a heavier buggy makes a big difference.
http://www.kiteforum.co.nz/images/fbfiles/images/P7100022.JPG

You usually move the axle back in relation to the fork axis to increase trail.
Rake and trail (http://pic7.piczo.com/Popeyethewelder/?g=44487739&cr=7)
This would in effect reduce the leverage on the elastomers.

Otherwise if you want to run the trail you have now with the axle on the forward end hole of the swingarm why not chop and change the forks to bring the pivot point forward and reduce the amount of leverage on the elastomers. This is what I'm doing with the moosetruck to bring it closer to the operating range of the elastomer(that and making the elastomers slightly larger)

PS. Think I'll need the larger elastomers for running a 17" bike wheel anyway.

Depends on how hard you kite. :)
One handed raileys are pretty hard on the body, especially the shoulders.

I got a new hip 3 months ago (osteo-arthritis) and the specialist banned me from high impact sports for 6 months. After a couple of months of wasting away I thought bugger it I need exercise so took on a kite-boarding trip to Samoa. 10 days of heat and kiting almost every day was amazing, the muscles are now back to full strength and the extra flexibility is great. I can feel things seizing up again in rainy old NZ and from sitting down all day. Keep moving and stretching :)

There are a number of old rippers out there, kiting is certainly less demanding on the body that windsurfing or snow-boarding.

rubbers are the same as the ones you made, there the natural rubber looking ones...
the way i see it the link has roughly 2inch travel in either direction, 4inch in total up and down...the buggy takes up one and i take up the other leaving only very stiff and unusable travle at the very end of the stroke..
the way i set up a bike fork is when i weight up the bike i use up roughly a third of its travel as sag, at the moment the buggy uses up a half of the travel all by its self, this means the link needs some preload to compensate both the weight of the buggy AND my own body weight to make the most of the travel.
at the moment even if the urethane was stiffer it still wouldnt have any preload, you would still have the spring loaded in the wrong direction with all your mass, so to compensate for this it needs some spring...
whats happend is that i decided to make the trail on the fork the same as my rigid forks at about 110mm from the centerline, this is a bit longer than usual llforks so the effect of unwanted sag is more pronounced.

Woohoo Today I did the impossible. I passed a class 5 land yacht. They are the 100k+ yachts. I have to admit that it was not having a real push but I caught it in a dull patch of wind and roared on passed. Thats right up there with passing the Terminator. I don't care if he has a broken buggy and a wet kite. I f I can pass Perrin I am happy.
For todays effort I was testing my new 3m PL Twister 2. I got a broken one and replaced all the primary bridles. It was flying great but was a bit small for the wind and the angle was all wrong. The land yachts were pulling 80k+ on the good runs. I wasn't going that fast but I will take that pass.
Nice kite that twister. It is the one Craig did 88kph on my beach with so it will go as fast as I want to ride and it handles great.
After I got back from the beach I took my buggy apart and made some bushes up so I could fit my composite axle. Its 1030mm but I am going to space it out to near 1100. I am so looking forward to riding on that. Should have done it before I went riding but time was running out and I was keen to try my new kite.
With the blue balls and the new bits and a bit of pace recently it has been a good month.

Hi All,

Thank You Dan, Michelle and Shane for my birthday wishes. 35 years old last weekend!

Really appreciate the kinds words and the photo at Snow Farm last year.

Would LOVE to get down to Wanakite this year, however have just started a new job at Touchpoint (http://touchpointgroup.com) in the city and have yet to earn kiting day credits.

Wishing everyone that is heading down this year to Wanakite a wonderful and amazing time, that you look out for each other and treat the mountains with the respect they command. It is simply a special place up in the mountains on a windy day, kite in hand, fresh powder underneath. Simply sensational...

N-joi everyone.

(plan on checking out the wanakite freeride).

Ill be bringing my own kites over but will need snowboard gear and my mate will need kite gear but he has snowboard gear any places you would recommend for hiring gear?

Anyway we will be cruising around in our van and any advise/tip would be great.

Hope to see you out there soon.

Hi all, I have uploaded what little video footage from the First day of Blue Balls at Kawhia. Not much buggying but plenty of Rain. Shame Thomas and I had to head back to Wellington and miss day 2 at Raglans. Not a great video session as the camera kept shutting done in the rain

in responce to your head/fork angle jimmy, i would only want to adjust the angles to alter the handling , rather than to overcome suspention sag issue,in order to get the swing arm level you would be adjusting geometry throught 20degrees or so.. on a mountain bike you would ,in this situation, wind in some preload....you wouldnt actualy alter the bike to compensate for the sag..i definently wouldt chose harder springs for any other reason than to ballance my weight, and it appears in this situation i am to heavy for the spring, but i dont want to change the spring feel, i really do love how plush it is but the fact remains that when im in the buggy iv used up all the travel...i like the idea of a diamiter increase...
the other thing i tried and it works, was a negative spring (very large elastic band)... with some pretention in the band i could agjust the sag to normal amounts (1/3rd) whilst still having a lovley soft and active suspention fork....but it was ugly as hell and probably required the bestpart of 15 kilos of backpressure to get the fork feeling right

i agree that wedges are damage limitation.as is the elastic band theory...but i think preload is the way to go somehow(not rider/buggy weight) but a spring on the fork to take the load and let the urethane do the damping..
the downder is who wants a dirty spring on their fork :S not me...they say the uglier the machine the grater the love affair but springs on my nice fork.....please, id rather take up blowcarting. wotwot..

but it would work and thats important.

As far as i know your fork is made from my drawing plus peters usual tweeks (he even tweeks my ones) my drawing has some basic dimensions of the goose neck in order to make it work properly and the design is set to the MIDDLE hole of the three in the front of the swing arm to get the award winning trail ;) (note: almost every sports bike has the same trail in the world now for the same diameter wheels as we run). you can adjust it to preference though. The elastic you mention is actually the very way the Original leading link is still set up on speedway bikes , google leading link and speedway to get some ideas. they use more rubber bands to make the suspension harder and i guess different duros. Im not as up with the play as most of you on setting up suspension ironically BUT i got the geomety right and did practical experiments to find the best dampening i could. im just trying to work out how yours is that far out Al and why, i have seen the problem before but only on elastomers that are too soft, or not enough preload back bend of the forks. i am doubting the forks are a mm out so im thinking goose or elastomers currently and that your running the front hole on the swing arm, or have altered the hole spacing as the hole spacing matches my set geometry and hardness of the mount. we have 15 or 20 working world wide now so its just a tweek at this point :)

my experience with springs and elastomers. .. . . . skateboarding and mounatin biking, on my revo style trucks. is that you are far better off with the corrent spring weight/durometer and running no or very little preload to achieve the desired result.

from what you explain (without riding it) i still recon for the heavier buggy your'll need heavier duro.

There were 3 buggies and a Blokart at Aromoana on Sunday - buggy riders are increasing in Dunners - although some of our beaches are pretty small. We choose the beach based on wind direction - mostly Aromoana, Long and Warrington tho. Hard to find a good place in westerly winds.

The whole design of the elastomer has to be balanced as it’s both a factor of volume and surface under compression as well as the durometer. Since responsiveness has to be balanced to the hysteresis of the system, durometer plays a very important role. This is a factor of the system inertia, applied force and distance that the system is being acted through. Hence why I think there should be a subtle difference between the elastomers for a bigfoot compared to a barrow racer if not only for the fact that the swing arm ends up longer.

I placed a bevel on the elastomer to match the look of the original ones but I think the best design is to have the washer that supports the outer faces fully support the whole outer surface and bevel the washer for looks instead. This immediately increases the supported volume. If you currently have too small a washer it may be an easy test to slip in a larger one and see how much it improves the performance.

While my barrow racer is superb I have a similar issue with my Moosetruck due to the weight of the downtube and front fork construction. I wanted extra weight in the front since I extended the length and needed to balance the design. However the elastomers are not designed for this weight so I also want to go larger in increments to see what it affects. Though it takes me a good day to machine a new set of molds to achieve this.

So what is coming:
New casting compounds.
Elastomers without bevelled edges so the washer will support the surface right to the edge.
New larger molds in 55mm or 60mm to test
Maybe try a cup washer as I see as much support for as against giving me an indication that issues are design specific.

Hopefully I have time left to get the oppertunity to kite too.

Thanks to my lovely wife for posting the info. Charlotte will be in Luderitz also as support. She would have been competing and would certainly have set a NZ Womens record and given the world record a good crack. Sadly, although excitingly at the same time, she will have a large baby bump going on by that time, so maybe next year.
Thanks for the reply's we will keep you updated starting right now:

Today in a hail/rain storm with winds of around 40 knots I ran a 53.36knot(98.8kph) 10 second run. This is the fastest 10 second run in the world for 2010! and the 2nd= fastest 10 sec run on the all time GPS world ranking(although I believe Alex C, Frenchy has a faster as yet unratified run)
Looking forward to some consistent 40 to 45knot Luderitz winds!

You cannot have any negative camber in the axle when it is unweighted or unloaded. Else on the upstroke with the kite or in really bouncy situations you alternate positive to negative camber... really bad thing at high speed!

Secondly, similar to the durometer issue you don't want to store energy, you just want to absorb it, damping oscillation and bounce out of the wheels in order to keep them in contact with the ground... breaking contact prevents you from loading up the kite and transferring the force into forward speed and motion. So a really good single fibre laminate is kinda out as it stores energy well and releases it which generates rebound. If you use double bias or triax you would have to lay it up so non of the fibres run lengthwise and due to it's nature the long fibres will still create a very stiff and lively laminate. Hence why I opted for chopstrand... not because I'm poor or because it is all I had to use but by design as it creates a dead laminate that dampens rather than rebounds.

This woodcore axle was my first and I was surprised how well it worked. Having the stub on centre prevents tramping and the wider profile prevents alternating toe-in toe-out, I would like it a little stiffer for my weight by adding core thickness but afraid it may make it too lively. A few options to test anyway...

" the force of the wheel bolt is not acting on the center of the axle in a slide and its winding up the axle"

it just one of those jobs I didn't get back too,
and make new end plates to hold the wheel bolt on the centre line,

but the ski axle comes into it's own when you hit the dunes, it,s better than sliced bread and my carbon axle

Taking one step back , I think the buggy was designed and build for the dunes , not the hard sand.
so, get the buggy off the beach. :-D

buggys are like cars there is No perfect car or buggy, Buses, sport cars, 4x4's they all do one or two things well and that's all,
as we will see this year, speed buggys will be developed into something different again. ;)

i'd spend a good day scraping the beach smooth then turn up the following day to find it all stuff up again. that beach changes significantly day by day.

i used to let it piss me off. but with my current set up i quite enjoy it. it adds flavour and skill to what could be an otherwise average day. it certainly keeps you on your toes when your fangin over baby head sized rocks and 40+kph.

lets face it ski axle is just a quick, cheap, easy trial. It will have issues as we can see of axle tramp plus torsional lateral and radial flex. gannets carbon yacht mast axle is pretty damn high tech and out of reach by mere mortals.

gusters wood axle is ok but i think a composite leafed shape would yeald a better result. think of a super long snowboard shape with a good 100mm of radius over the length of the axle.

get the shape right and it will flex to flat for standard riding give a nice supple amount of negative travel and have a fairly high rising rate for harder hits. laying up some solid layers of double bias on the 45's would give you great torsional rigidity

thats my 2 cents as a non buggier.

I didn't make it there and I'm not going to make it to the Moose either :(
The upside is......I'm of to Abu Dhabi for a year so I can play in the Dunes :P
I have been in contact with Sand Yeti and should have a buggy sorted for when I get there.

preload to get a flat swing arm comes from the fork angle or head angle, wedges is damage control. gotta see your setup to work out if its head angle or fork angle you need to tweak . def not too much harder on the duro i have been there and its the crappiest solution, very harsh and almost no dampening. softer is better but less controlled, medium is good :) remember we have tried 7 different mounts now so its getting harder to improve on what we have. you basically have axle tramp Al , it will be worse with soft tyres, the force of the wheel bolt is not actin on the center of the axle in a slide and its winding up the axle, thats why an axle that is wide and thin works better in part. petes foil axle is still the best one of them all to date, i haven't found one better so far. Eugenes is probably the next best and is a good solution to build yourself. As solid axle has been argued by the maker of the xx racer as the only good solution for pure racing, and his buggies are usually up in the top 5 so i would tend to agree for now ;). i love how smooth perrin looks through the corners in that video, well done once a gain ave it looks good

I have some new casting medium in different flavours. Flounder belly yellow flava to be exact. Unfortunately they like things dry and warm and I don't have the postcure environment if I have neither of the aforementioned right now(stupid winter) But I am working on it.

I would not go harder either as you get less damp and more rebound. Instead we should look at larger diameter rubbers for you. Either that or a lighter buggy! :P

Waiting on delivery of a press ram to make some cupped stainless washers to help support the elastomers better and hopefully prevent the splitting and tearing. Slowly getting there...

Well if you not reading yakers blog you should be. Sounds like he has had some real challenges! heres day 15 blog.

Day 15
15

08

2010
Today was one of the best and worst kiting days of the trip.
It was certainly the most mentally stressful day, mostly because I would be passing through “Shark Alley”, but also because of the extensive reefs that lead up to Recife.

One of the most common questions I get regarding long distance kitesurfing is “aren’t you scared of the sharks?” My answer is usually no, as the last fatal shark attack in NZ occurred back in the 60s. My lack of fear of sharks is based in a the stats which clearly show you are more likely to be hit by a bus rather than eaten by a shark.
However, there are a few places in the world where there are elevated chances of being attacked by a shark. Florida, Australia and South Afrcia all rate up there in the shark attack statistics, as does this area in Brazil:

A 20-kilometer stretch of beach that includes the most fashionable district in Northeastern Brazil, Boa Viagem, has earned a reputation as the world’s most dangerous for swimmers. Crime there is arguably no worse than in other urban beach resorts like Rio de Janeiro, but the shark attacks are unparalleled. Since mid-1992, 50 encounters involving humans and sharks –19 of them fatal – have been recorded along the short strip of coast. http://www.brazilmax.com ews.cfm/tborigem/pl_northeast/id/14

I have a love hate relationship with reefs as they provide flatwater which is great for kiting, but they are also a significant hazard.
Today I had a fantastic early morning run making the most of high tide, flat water and perfect wind angle and it was all going well until I ran aground on a sandbank at 9.30am.
I had given myself until 10am to head back into the open sea, further out from the reefs, but the sandbank hastened that decision. I attempted it several times but was unable to tack out though a nearby reef pass and eventually was forced to walk over the reef to get to clear water.
It was a really nervous moment crossing this reef and in the process I ended up dropping my kite on the reef.
Eventually I made it out to the open sea, but the relentless chop and difficult downwind angle didn’t make me any more comfortable so I opted to find the nearest habited sandy beach so I could find to check my kite and regain composure.
It took some serious effort to mentally prepare myself and head back out for an afternoon session challenging conditions, and the wind angle just wanted to pull me out to sea.
I thought the end of the day would never come and I was struggling to keep the kite in the air, as it felt like the lines had stretched again.
I was falling far too much for my liking (and for the potential number of sharks in the water) and I just wanted the day to be over.
I had been given some coordinates for a beach in Receife (which I was later to learn was named shark point!) and on landing I was greeted by fickle gutsy wind spilling off the high rises which forced me to pull my emergency IDS landing line.
I was greeted by this sign, but with some surfers in the water I was reassured that they would make better shark bait.

Feeling lucky?

I had to wait for 2.5 hours before I met up with my local contacts and then went for a late dinner, but the day wasn’t over until I had spent 45 minutes picking sea urchin spines out of my foot from the walk across the reef.
I am wondering if I will be able to kite tomorrow, but right now I am off for some rest and I’ll decide based on how I feel.

In those summer northeasters, launch on the kitchener st reserve, between the big dumb teeth and watercooled the windsurf shop. You absolutely have to be able to go upwind on your first run. It's a pretty dodgy spot to launch. OK for the locals who know the place, visitors have been for rides in ambulances..

If it's northeast and around 20kts avg on the www.portotago.co.nz meter at Taiaroa you can go to Stepney Ave in Harwood, a 30 min drive. In these conditions the harbour will likely be 30+ kts. Or go to Aramoana, either side of the mole (breakwall)

S to SW is Middle Beach from the park between Marlow Park and Moana Rua Road, or Lake Waihola from the domain near the waterski club. Or Harwood again if you like it windy.

Or call me on 021 514 252

I could focus on my balance and turning the kite bike ( as Nigel doesn't talk much)
+ been dark was so cool, I'm going to do more night rides .

Nigel was to lazy to get the tripod out of the truck and then the camera battery went flat

and I was having to much fun to stop and change up to the 7m frenzy.
OH Well, at least the 4m access didn't drag me over the fence, I'm shore Nigel no mates would have just watched and laughed :S

so this was the second kite time ,it's well worth the dollars

it was an epic session, love the vid dave.
flappy thing guster, was the batterd remains of my mudguard...god rest its soul.
the axle tramp hopefully wont happen in the moose, it only started during pretty hard drifts that you dont normaly get to do in the soft sand, also had the tyres pumped up very hard, i think if they were to be softer it will help kill the tramp, failing that im not sure what to do.
testing went well jimmy ;) nothing on the buggy broke atall...very happy with it.cant wait to get it in the moose.

guster, are you able to cast some harder urethane pucks? the ones in their at the mo are overly soft for the rig...i also wonderd about inserting a wedge shaped shim both bottom and top to offset the link so it preeloads the durometer to compensate for sag?...hat do you guys think about this??

Dunno bout that camera but looks like it faces north. North is crossonshore at EB. Waiheke is to da NE. Its not very gusty at EB at all... perhaps slightly more so than Orewa but way less crowded and no surge to contend with.

yep, i'm ready for summer, tried to go buggying today but it was too light..

buggied last saturday and kitesurfed sunday.. actually not too cold..

got my gear in the car for small afterwork sessions now that there's a little bit of daylight..

the watercooled thing shouldn't be too bad, just the parking might be a bit tight on a windy sunny day.. might be more room without the cars parking in there..

the council seem to be doing whatever they want..

I'm curious with what they've done down at the watercooled launch spot too, has anyone been involved with the council over it? looks like theres still room rig up but I'm paranoid they'll throw in a giant tongue or something to go with the molars!?

This scam has been around the hotel industry for years, I have hundreds of examples. They basically sucker you into charging a dodgy card then cancel and ask for a refund to be credited by bank deposit. Low and behold a month later the true card owner will call thier bank and the result will be the retailer has to refund the cardholder as well. Could be a costly transaction. Give them the bird the bank can't do much.

Thanks for the tip. I was in Takapuna today. It was really cool. But a bit gusty.
I was heading towards Rangitoto Island till i reached the fairway. Is it legal in NZ to cross the fairway? In Germany you have to pay a fine for crossing the fairway.

Welcome back :)

Al , point taken ok we will wing it

meeting times and days remain the same.

hard sand race is charley’s baby I’m sure it will be as epic as ever and fulfill our cravings, it just needs to be a fair and balanced course so race kites have some issues and so do stable slower kites, eg a good straight and some tight turns some where in there
(i like the course you drew Al, it has those qualities

soft sand is another story and we are in uncharted territory, i have some basic ideas but i see your point about wind direction. cant kite the shelly bits where the birds nest so it will be dunes one way or another, im sure we can sort it. something shortish and basic so all can enjoy. yip 3 races for soft last two reverse grid to keep it close and fun for all. shortish races like maybe 15 mins or so many laps etc. no helmet no race though, that’s virtually the only rule other than courtesy and common sense

howcome were having 3dune races and only one flat race? is the flat race going for the western circuit chapms??
dude if you have practice on sat morn for a race and then the actual race a day later the wind is likley to have shifted, sure youl know the course but all your lines/angles will have changed and probably your kite size..best to have practice an hour before the race if the course is set by then...its all up to the wind, you can plan ahead forever but if the wind shifts on you itl change everything.
that track i drew is based on a S/westerly to ss/west....you can move it around abit but if you want your 750m long straight youl need a really low tide if it goes south orth..
i havnt even thought about southerly ortherlys....they only really leave you with shortcourses or somethin in the dunes, iv never been up ther in a northerly altho it would be very very good for getting out the back and home again... easterlys are great if your sitting at camp having a beer...southeasterlys are very cool and give you acces to the huge dune face on the solstice moose video.southerlys ar like northerlies but leave you stranded miles downwind and westerlies generaly get me airborn off most bumps.

hard sand :::: meeting point on Saturday at 2pm at the camp entrance, where it hits the hard sand, the rest shall be told to you then. racing start shortly after
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Soft sand :::: practise on saturday morning , race meeting point 11 am SUNDAY at the kiteworks vehicle. racing shortly after

all turns on soft sand will be down wind turns, ill draw a basic map of the intended layout for the soft sand event soon for comment/improvment.

i have 5 good flags for racing markers to bring for any race.

We need one hooter powered by breath or pump up bottle for the race starter

Rules : helmets compulsory, no Kevlar lines, buggy max weight wet and sandy , ballasted 60kgs.

Al is making the moose soft sand trophy out of old scrap steel in a mystery shape.

3 official soft sand races first is a wide start all in, second a reverse grid from the first race finishing positions dnfs count as equal last. last race is a reverse grid based on first two races points, points system by charlie. (im liking your F1 points :) )

Hey.
The forecast for tomorrow looks well. So i want to go on the water again. But I don't know where to go to and how to get there. So who of you is going out on the water tomorrow? And can someone maybe give me a ride or just tell me where I can find a kitespot which is reachable with the busses from Auckland Central?
Thanks and Cheers.

yea, a good long straight so everyone can get a bit lose, dont forget a lot of kites also go very fast on a broad reach aswell as upwind, also not fair if the racekites get away on straights aswell as upwind..its tricky, generaly the racekites seem to grow leggs after 60kph, wich should be plenty fast enuff for any race, after 60 you need a drag race so your atleast all going in the same general direction!!

top idea for race meet time noticeboard.....write the time of the race on an old bit of fabric and sent it up with a lifter so it can flap to its hearts content. nobodys gonna miss that....will look a bit wired, but it just might work.its the moose afterall, whiteboards are so boring these days.

I will happily wave the flags and hold the clipboard at the moose providing I can still get plenty of riding time.

The most crucial piece of info that needs to go out is the start time. That does not need to be decided yet but the moose is too big to go around looking for people at race time. We have had racing at the moose before where we have called people only to find that they were 2kms away in a dune. If people are serious about racing they need to know when to meet and actually get there.

Low tide saturday is 4.30.
The hard sand race will be sometime after 2pm probably around 3 or 3.30 if you want a big flat beach to set a fancy course.
If everyone knows when the pre race meeting is then we can just set the course have the meeting and start the race.

A soft sand race can be held anytime provided there is wind but again people must know where and when to meet. If we can tell people in advance and have a notice hung up somewhere then everybody who is keen should make the start.

I would be keen on having 2 hard sand races on the Saturday to decide the western circuit champs. A short course race to gather everyone up and get everyone warmed up and then a nice big race on a multi leg course with time between for kite changes and tweaking of buggies changing tyres that sort of thing. The short course could be run earlier on less beach. At the blue balls we had a great triangle course on a surprisingly small amount of beach.

yip looks good dude, the idea is to publicize the courses in advance so everyone can practice the needed turns and get good at it , keeping the racing closer and more interesting. if that broad reach is 750m long you are reading my mind Al. jhust gotta keepo the upwind part real because some kites point much higher than others and we want to cater for all comers, the second up wind looks like a tack i s needed or a longer up wind and 180 up wind turn , cool :)

Great weekend with really great people.
The live music was excellent and the conversation always ended up on the best of subjects...buggying !

Midnight...(well, 2am Sat) flying a 9M+ Peter Lynn Reactor II was a 'first' for me and to date the biggest kite I've flown, (thanks Craig)

The Raglan race was a chance to get more than just a couple of laps and try my first downturns in a race.
I'm glad I didn't have my GPS on board, as the track would have looked something like
a 2year old's representation of a spider...

Thanks to Charlie and his lovely family for the dinner and the hospitality.
Cool workshop and the second 'first' for me was the flying pig....

I'll post a couple of pics here, but I got very few still shots and took much more in the way of video, which I hope to get up on youtube as soon as I can find time.

Awesome Weekend !!!

the king of the rain race by charloie was proof that any race, nomater what format .... is cool.
anything is possible, everybody has ther own ideas...at the end of the day the race master makes the track and makes the roules and tells everybody how it works..
you definently cant make all thepeople happy all the time...it the course is fair for all involved and thats all you can do then thats fine, if you can make it intresting thats even better, if you can add a splash of fun then your laughing..

for me an ideal flat course would have a bit of everything but not complicated and easy to tweak for the wind conditions to get it to flow nicely..... a bit like this..
http://www.kiteforum.co.nz/images/fbfiles/images/racetrack.JPG

its safe, got a bit of everyhting, faster than a shortcourse but has enuff corners to make it tactical.

it was a very good weekend, their really isnt anything quite like huddling up under a small, altho tardis-like (howmany kitebags+people in their!!) shelter, cunningly supplied by thoes who have seen it all before..
i loved it, altho a had a hangover on saturday that hurt a bit...i think i blame charloie.last time i was at the blueballs i had a hangover and if i recall propely it definently had something to do with you!!
highlite of the weekend was the powerkite song, my new hat and suicidejybes..or atleast some freaky version of one..i was fortuate enuff to be behind craig at one point where i wached him throw the kite up and over and from then on in it was getting the balls and the timing togeather to pull one off...so two sets of snapped lines later
massive thanks to charloie, an awsome weekend...and the man knows how to put on a show and a race...loved it.
till next year..

following on from another classic event at the blue balls buggy bash hosted by Charley, our focus turns to the next one... the moose meet

events should be held on saturday and sunday of the moose so people who need to travel big distances can make it

hard sand race in triangle or more complex shape with all down wind turns, 750m long straights, hopefully with a reverse grid start over a good number of laps to make it interesting and give everyone a chance to have the lead for a time during the race.

and a dune race on a shortish narrow diamond shape from large dune crest to next large dune creast with turns on the face of the dune , also down wind turns . the basic idea is the dune race will not have unfamiliar terrain once a lap or two has been done but will be over rougher terain. (thats an idea that has been brewing for a while) perfect for the high tide time we will have.

Any and all ideas, assistance materials etc will be a big help. I am hoping our charley can continue the obvious success of his racing formats. theres the base for discussion now lets build on it and make it a good one.

and i just need help keeping really sick people away from me long enough to attend this one.. !

i would like to test that theory, i have a couple of 2 line kites for craig and perrin to run next time out ;) i can see your point, most kites we run have a good shot at a race win if in the right hands and there i a lot to winning a race. perrin basically did the oposite of what i would have , removed his visor, ran a smaller kite, used very old bearings that wont even free spin 2 revolutions in his wheels, im so pleased he didnt kick my ass too. But having said that i think id rather have been there to have that happen, still stuck in the car for work :(

Fat Old Whimp wrote:
It wasn't the kite that won it was the rider. Check the race report I just posted. Perrin made a strategic kite change just before the race in the rain and started with a dry kite. In the trophy race Craig made more mistakes than Perrin.
Craig was pulling away from Perrin in the trophy race and in the rain he was faster on several legs but Perrin got a much better start and had a steady pace.
Those vapours are hot but only as hot as the guy flying them and the buggy underneath them and the tyres that are sitting on the the sand.
The guy with the best pace on the first day was Thomas flinging some baby pepper around the sky. He had some great runs but by race time his kite was too wet to be fast.

Brilliant day!!!

As a newbie, it's pretty cool to have raced with some of the best in the country.

The 3.5 N-gen was a little small for the conditions but I'm hoping it'll go well in a stronger breeze. There seems to be a lot more to learn about flying it than I first thought. I think I'll be bending Al's ear on this one.

Raglan is excellent, I surfed it quite a few years ago but I now see it in another light altogether

Racing is so cool, I just need a 20M kite and a bit more experience.......
Ok, a lot more experience first, and maybe an 8M for those low wind days....and a bigger buggy.
MMM.... must compose that letter to Santa.

It was so good to have you along. I personally would not like to have been out in that race. It looked very busy. good on you for playing with the fast boys.
