Argh! Just typed out a reply then lost it!

... When I was looking for a GPS I read alot of bad things about the Forerunner... And I can't seem to find anything about this supposed X200??? Got a link?

In the end I went with an eTrex. You can get them sub-$100 on TardMe. I ended up with an eTrex Vista for $80! No regrets.

I had the W300 and was drawn to it as it was made for watersports but was really disappointed with it as kiting aid as the numbers on the screen started to disappear in some places and not the whole number just parts of it. Don't know if it got water in it or bashed it once to often when i came out of the buggy.

Anyway i also went with the e-trex vista as you can record your trip logs on the computer and have heaps of other function as well as been able to download maps and tell the emergency services your position if you need to. and its high sensitivity allows you to put it in a backpack or under your jacket. I know you can't see it in these places but i think its safer in there than on your arm.

eTrex Vista sounds like it might be the go, trip logs on the computer would be good

Ditto - eTrex Vista. Much better or the "eTrex Legend" for that matter.

Ok just to straighten the confusing "Garmin eTrex" range out:

eTrex: Most basic model
+ Cheapest
- No 4 way joystick (very handy!)
- No mapping
- Lower screen res (64 x 128)

eTrex Legend:
+ Basic mapping eTrex
+ 4 way Joystick
+ Higher res screen (160 x 288) (this makes a HUGE difference I found!)

eTrex Vista:
+ Basic mapping eTrex
+ 4 way Joystick
+ Higher res screen (160 x 288)
+ Electronic Compass (surprisingly accurate!)
+ Barometric altimeter

eTrex Venture: Like Legend but a bit shorter and fatter.

eTrex Summit: Like Vista but a bit shorter and fatter.

There are also a few acronyms that you will see attached to the models:
C or Cx: Means it has a color screen - You'll pay more.
H: The new "high sensitivity" receivers. You'll pay more and although I haven't had the chance to test one of these I've heard mixed things about them ie. that the non-H models are better in some situations and the 'H' models in others. Can't remember what exactly.

If I were you I would get the Vista or the Legend. Whichever you find for the best price

Hope this helps.
