hey dave
pencil in 27-28 feb if your keen, since its a 10 hour one way trip for me looking at making a week of it. this weekend looks like the best tides low at 3ish and a big tide run and not to late in summer. after april weather tens to be a right off. im not going by the weather or i might not get there this year again! since i may be there most of the week.
BUT if you want to try another date add you 2cents
i'd suggest take the Wed off 24th head up and then you get the following days to make an attempt
thur low 2010/02/25 13:15 -0.89
friday low 2010/02/26 14:19 -1.12
Sat low 2010/02/27 15:13 -1.35
Sun low 2010/02/28 16:02 -1.54
i'll be looking at driving up to auck the evening of the 24th (wednesday). Staying at a mates in auckland then punching to the 90 early on the morning of the 25th (thurs). That would get me to the beach around low tide and mean i'd have thurs afternoon, friday and saturday for an attempt.
Sunday i'd have to do the LOOOOOOONG haul home.
If anyone wants to jump on board i'll have seats free. however my vehicle (being a work lease car) can't drive on the beach so i'll need to beg a lift in 50psi or northen Als vehicle for the actual attempt.
I have to admit if the forecast is for bugger all wind i will pull pin. i don't want to drive 20hrs for 5 knot easterlies. i really want to see 10+knot westerlyish direction.
for me this is a one time thing. if i punch up there and its poohouse i wont be back..... not for 5 years or so.
yeah. i'd love to just fang up and see what happens.....
but with a young family i get a couple of manly weekends away a year. i have to make them worthy. since kiting is so weather dependant it makes 100% pre commitment hard. if i turn up and its poo i've just poled one of the very few trips away that i get...
i also mountain bike. infact its my number 1 sport. and have a group of dudes wanting to me to go one mtb trips away..... so i have to make a decision. epic kiting trip or epic mtb trip. both will be glorious. BUT the kiting trip stands to be a blow out if wind doesn't play ball.
in know all excuses.... yourl get the final decision tuesday/wed that week. i'm hoping for epic 20 knots and stories to remember till my grave.
In which case talk nicely to Al and ask him to take your buggy. then you can jump in the sv6 with me and haul up to ahipara and back in the minimal time possible.
Takapuna to Ahipara is 318km. Thats approximatly 3.5 hours in my wagon sitting on 108kph. really for you its not that far.
For the chance of an epic trip. perhaps the most epic trip you have been on surely the 3.5 hours drive up there is worth while?
you go to beach in the middle of winter, travel miles on a buggy with cold high winds, sand blasting in your face and everywhere else!! BUT ur scared of a little camping trip!?!?
i must kindda stick up for wayne here, atho we are all very dissapointred and really want you to come.....for example, next time i get to do this is when my kids can come with me!!
last time wayne and i went camping, i haddnt got the van aswell setup as i do now, so wayne had to sleep on a lino floor wedged between a wheelarch and a chillibin whilst getting eaten by the wildlife and enduring my snore!! wayne only allowed this to happen for an hour!! the rest of the nite was spent back on the campfire chair by the fire........wayne does not camp well.
but you would be well looked after this time, were a lot better at it now.
just booked time off work...im confermed 26,27,28,1
maby longer but only if i make excuses to boss!!
their will be myself, maby ange as my driver....my friend chriss and his gfrend hannah in a new mini campervan like mine, so we have a backup car anyway as they wont be buggying ,and if ange comes we have the moosebus...rexton..perrin..plummet and 50psi.oviusly are attending.
sweeeet..... so Al traveling up friday??
will you able to make it to the start for a friday attempt on the beach around group on the beach around ll?
50psi shall we hit baileys on the thurday?
Jimmy. you can stay in a cabin in the camp ground. no camping required. camping in the dunes at the top may or may not happen depending on wind/direction etc. all you need to do is find an air bed. theres heaps of tent space as i also have a tent.
ps Al. i have a little 12 amp hour battery you can have. it will give several hours of spot light performance before going flat. i'll bring it up with me...
possiby start the trip thursday after work and just stop when were tired and carryon in the morning...but this depends..but that would definently get us their by 2pm so thats my plan..
what are you guys doing when you get to the top? we are all hoping to stay the nite at the cape somewhere fri/sat nite but open to what you guys are doing.
somehow managed to convince ange to come, so should be easy for us all to get around..
my personal desire would be to stay friday night at the top and sat night in ahipara or there abouts. then when the sunday haul home commences i'm not right at the top of the island. however i'll be blagging a ride to the top and stashing my car somewhere? at a camp ground perhaps. so i'll be dependant on who i'm blagging from.
Ideally you want to be getting close to the 90 around 11/mid friday if you want to make an attempt on the whole beach.
Also it will depend on the wind direction and depend on if we are fanging bottom to top or top to bottom.
yep think we can make a call mon/tuesish re a plan.
im in auck on mon so may get a day at muriwai too!
bailys sounds ok thur to break up the trip but if the weather looks to good i would like to be at 90mile, as i think its a way better beach.
then you get more days up there dave, since ur back on sunday.
sweet, penning in sat night at ahipara.
camp sites are in order going up
Ahipara,Waipapakauri Beach,Houhora,Waitiki Landing
plus doc sites if ur keen
bringing light!!
nite riding sounds like a good idea too twice the fun
im pretty fine when im awake, sand, mud, water not much of a problem, but when i need sleep i tend to get picky . hey its my loss eh ? the day part is very compelling for sure.
who tells my wife im travelling on our 14th wedding anniversary , whats the rage factor scale for that one plummet ? hehe
ill see if i can work something out but im not feeling it yet....
moose last week was pretty good and has some of my kite itchyness out of the way.
14th.... i'm sure thats paper or cell phone credit or something..... that only gets rage factor 7.2, well below the 9 minimum rage factor to consider not going!.. hahaha
do you still have all those demo kites? give them to Al so we can demo there arses when were hauling at personal best speeds.....
i've given up trying to convince your to come. now i'm reverting to goad you with what your missing out on.
now theres a thing,
just imagine.........tailing end of a tropical storm......bit misty....40knots and a 2.2 and grippy tyres, a heap of ballast and 90kilometers of flat straight beach.

woooooooooooooohaaaaa
Take notes Plummet... this is how you goad people. N-Al you meanie!
ha ya ya ya ya, ha ya ya ya, ha ya ya ya.....
dances naked around a fire sacrificing a goat to the wind gods....
ha ya ya ya ya, ha ya ya aya ya yayyya.....
wind yay yaya yaya ya blow ya ya ya thursday, friday, saturday y ay ay ayyaya...
amen.
i know its too early to predict.... but the prediction isn't that flash.
you guys still going no matter what?
i've been looking at the wind predictions for northland and different beaches look good on different days. whats your tendancy to road trip to the beach with the best wind if 90 is not churning?
eg baileys looks better on thursday, top of 90 mile looks cross cross on for friday, good for kitesurfing and dune riding, sat looks good for eastern beaches maybe ruakaka or something?
i've pretty much decided if i don't go on this trip i'll get my arm operated on and miss out on any other trips until the moose meet. so i'm keen to trip where ever the wind is! if thats not 90 mile then so be it.
im going no matter what! got the car half packed, has your said we just have to make a call the day before on where the best wind is.
bailys, 90 mile or kokota sandspit? depending what looks the best.
Also the wind prediction can be way out. today is predicting 11 knots for new plymouth and its already at 16-18... probably hit 20 by 3. I'm off for a hell kitesurfing session!.
yea we are going no matter what...going to be an awsome camping trip for mate chris anyway, and ange is coming so have both vans going to the top.
gannet..sad you cant make it..im very exited, id love to come and pick it up...ill call you tomorow when im at home.
i could use a large kite if you guys are happy to loan one...im a bit stuck for low wind days...
whats the crack with the ozone kites wayne? are you willing to part with a few for us to demo?
oh yeah. did i hear 12m yak gt? i'd like try that bad boy. 7m frenzy would be cool to try in 25-30 knots if there is any......
gannet can you arrainge baby sitting? grandmothers? random teenagers down the road. theres at least one buggier that can't be bothered chuck him the kids for the weekend?
Al you may need to mobilise for a 90 attempt friday hitting the beach and ready to rock 11, 12 at the latest. if todays forecast is to go by Friday is the day! saturday will be eastern beaches.
yes yes, we are heading up thursday night and will try to get to ahipara, if not then an early am start from where ever we are stopped at will get us their for hopefully earlier than 11am..
just gonna drop the buggy off the roof and run...
oooh i'm chomping.....
dusting off the full face and moto armour. hope to break the 40mph/65kph and be top 10 in the world. oh yeah.
thrown in a couple of new bearings slapped the super wide axle on, tried the air matress in the back of the new wagon.
ps i'm 100% committed. its all on. will be leaving wednesday night drive as far as i can sleep then hit what ever beach has wind thurs. friday game face on and beat the arses off some buggiers.....
killer wales, tsunami warnings, being hit by a bus, not to mention the 2 longest and hardest beaches in nz, good company and wind made for a faaaarken epic trip probably never to be bettered.
i'll post a full right up in a couple of days after i recover
bus didn't hit me but not me but my brand new work car!!! damn thing side swipped me on a skinny back country road.
saturday was riding the monster dunes at the top of the 90. pictured above. and yes i jumped in a buggy and looped my way up the dune with the mighty 6m access.!
Damm I didn't see any kites in the air xsept mine, was at Te Paki stream fri and sat, camped(and got a bit liquerd with some german tourists) in the stream half way out to the beach as this was the best access for brutal to the dunes at the top of ninty mile, started out with me new 10.8 reactor....... took two hours befor I got enough gust to get it up.........well that lasted a whole 10mins befor I was forced (due to lack of time on the ground ) to change to a raddicly smaller kite ie 10.8 to 4(and I thought the big drops were supossed to be terrain orientated ) spent all saturday showing off to the pathetic bus operators who make their occupants climb the dunes by foot then boogy board back down, proved kite power was better in both directions, the easterlies were getting plenty strong as I blew and brand new set of lines with my Blade 4.0(lines not brutal proof yet perrin )trying to do warp nine up to the top to try and spy the great norternal , yet alas after allday carving up the top of the dunes keeping a keen eye out for other kites.............nada .......so at 6.00pm I packed me broken lines between me legs, rolled down the dunes to me car and went home......wot an epic day though
What the ?!!.... thats some bad timing/organising. We hit the tepaki stream around 3-4 of friday after bombing the beach. and was in the north end entrance of the dunes for stream for the saturday.
