Hey Plummet....

I'll try an be impartial.....

what is a good set up for me?

A good cheap foil kite would be a good starting point for landboarding. I would suggest not getting anything too big or too small, as it will only end in either tears or frustration. Something around the 5.0m mark will let you practice your flying skills in sub 10 knot winds, and get you up and running in the 10-15 knot range.

how much would it cost

Second-hand kites are generally in the $200-$400 dependent on make and model. Budget or entry level kites start around the $300+ mark, and a brand new kites even more.

what type of kite should i get

Everyone will have a different opinion on this, but for entry level landboarding I would go for a foil kite. They are powerful, fun and can be cheap. Once you know a bit more about what you want to do and gain some more experience you can think about a depower, LEI's, Bows, ARC's and the rest.

brands?

Ozone, Flexifoil, Radsail, Peter Lynn, Beamer, Flysurfer, ect.... the list goes on an on...

places to buy?

See the 'Stockist' thread at the top of this forum for all the current shops and retailers in New Zealand... There are plenty more in the US, UK and Oz.

anyone kitelandboarding in np? that can show me what its all about??

Not sure about this one.... Anyone from New Plymouth wanna represent...?

pss loose or tight trucks for mountainboard

As for trucks, I personally go for stiffer trucks as I mainly spend my time cruising up and down the beach. If you are interested in full-on speed then the stiffer the better to help combat 'Speed Wobble', (at a certain speed the board may start to steer back and forth very quickly... not fun..!). If you want to carve or do tricks and aerials then softer truck settings are the way to go to allow you that freedom of movement.

Keep them questions coming.... and maybe some of the other guys will answer...

my first kite was a flexifoil bullit 3.5m . i found this would get me moving in 5knots and lift me in about 15 but there not designed for this. standard lines on these are only rated for 20 knots for some reason?!?

i'm 76-77kg?!? depending on pies

hi'' my answear to this is' i would stick with'' spig lord'' as he has the best intro kites and maybe boards i have started landboarding about 3 months ago and i got spiglord to set me up with all my gear .

and i have to say i was happy i was a little weary about the construction of the radsail 4 m i got but it has proven to be my best friend in flying and in constuction . not to mention ''price''

i have found spig lord to be verry honest and is alway keen to talk it over if you are not sure of what gear is ok which spig and i have has several emails ok about 100 to talk over gear isues .

i recomend a 4m radsil as the verry good price that steve sells these for is just the ticket for getting started.

just my 2 cents worth. cheers kiter

another virginal question

can you go directly downwind??? or do you always have to be on some angle of the wind?

Nope You can do either.

Generally on the beach or in a park you would be going across the wind in both directions, (called a Beam Reach), so youll want the wind to be coming in at as close to 90 degrees to your direction of travel as possible. So if you want to travel North & South, wind out of the East would be perfect. Once you get used to going across the wind, youll soon learn how to be able to cut back against the wind on a Close Reach, which is effectively upwind. This will allow you to travel back and forth when the wind is coming in away from 90 degrees.

From going across the wind you can also easily start heading downwind on a Broad Reach by just turning away from the wind. On a fully downwind tack your problem will be controlling your speed and stopping safely, which is usually done by turning to a beam reach or powersliding to a stop, (this could be a problem on a narrow concrete path!)

Hey Tony.... Welcome to the world of landboarding...

Choosing a kite size is dependent on a number of factors, like weight, experience and local winds. Take a look at my FAQ page (http://www.landboarding.co.nz/FAQ001.html), for more information about choosing a good kite to start with...

Don't hesitate to ask any further questions you have....
