TOPIC: Landboarding at Muriwai?

Landboarding at Muriwai? 10 months, 2 weeks ago #27740

Hey all,

New to the sport of landboarding... just wondering if anyone actually landboards at Muriwai?

I tried there on Sunday but didn't have much luck. This was mainly due to not enough beach and overly soft sand. My wheels seem to get stuck and then when the kite powers up I just get ripped out of my bindings

I think I could increase my tire pressure (checked before and wheels seem a bit soft)... and also getting there at exactly low tide (was there about 2 hours after low tide on Sunday - maybe this was too late?).

Do people actually landboard here, or are there better beaches in Auckland when the westerlies are blowing?

Cheers,

Nick.

ha its the best place to go in auck!!!

try between 2/3hrs each side of high tide, there are soft spots but you need to stick to the wet sand, when it starts to get too dry its pretty much impossible to ride,
(but plummet is on 3+ year mission to build a board to ride dunes )

beach from the sea to 2/3 to the high tide mark should be good, near the high tide mark its to soft. ( as you found )

To get moving fined a hard bit of sand, power-up your kite, then you real have to lean back against your kite and board to get going and break the wheels out.

point you board a bit down wind too helps.
once your moving, stand more up right and turn up wind a bit to help keep you line tight

you'll find your pushing away/down with your feet, against the kite just like scudding, as you travel down the beach. this also helps the board stay stable at speed.

couldn't tell you my tire pressure i just pump them up like a mt-bike.

any questions

hope this helps/makes sense

Thanks for your reply, very helpful.

I will pump up my tires more and try going 2 - 3 hours each side of high tide as opposed to low tide as I was previously doing.

What is the best part of the beach to go, taking into account usable space and minimal people? I've tried from both Motutara Rd and where Coast Rd meets Grass Track Rd.

low tide till 2-3 hours after low tide is the best time , 50 psi means you can board 2-3 hours either side of low tide When i was land boarding 5-6 years ago i had 10" O.D tyres that i used for Muriwai because its a bit softer sand than Orewa where i used 9" OD grooved tyres.

A pic of the ultimate tyres shall be posted up by Plummet with in 24 hours no doubt
The grooved Grannies , his own special twist on good MTB riding on the softer sands.

NB : even hard muriwai sand is what i call fairly soft unless its the middle of summer.

most of the beach is about the same , its just that hard line below the mid tide mark your looking for.

hiya mate, that beach rocks...but you gotta learn when the tides are best, for example this weekend had a huge swell that had been building over a few days, this swell ate up all the beach, even at lowtide wich is why you has problems..i had problems on my kitebuggy and prettymuch packed it in after an hour.
at other times ther is a vast flat wide beach that goes on forever...the hight of the tide changes daily...

you can se it very clearley on this website.....

Cheers everyone. Will take all the advice on board and hopefully see you all out there

Had a really awesome session out at Orewa the week before.. hopefully I can achieve the same at Muriwai!

Oh yeah another landboarder!!! you must be made of read hard core stuff.

Indeed you can landboard muriwai. infact you can landboard the entire length of it all 45km..... Muriwai beach (the north end) holds the world records for 24hr distance in landboarding, buggying and kitebiking!!!

As others have states you need to aim for a couple of hours either side of low tide and an onshore SW wind gives you the best angle of the dangle. Then when you want to go crazy talk to Pete (gannet) at kite zone to get a granny tyre upgrade to monster up your board with massive tyres.

PS low pressure is what you want not high pressure!

my bad, 2-3 hr each side of LOW tide,

i only ever used the standard 9inch tires with no problems, But that was mostly in summer.

the higher the tire pressure the faster you go on a mt-board, its one way of controlling your speed. if your racing downhill on dirt or grass, some tracks are to fast other real slow so pumping you tires hard is needed like 50-60 psi! but that can get stupid with tires blowing off the rims etc...

ok back to kiting.
soft tires float on soft sand better BUT if there too soft you board will be harder to slide out, (good for speed control) dave has fat as tires which is why he can run at a lower pressure.
so dont go to soft

if you got a 4x4 you dont mind parking on the beach just by the access road it will save walking, or park by the surf club.

Hey another landboarder. Great stuff. I board at Muriwai when ever I can. So would be good to hook up one day.

Re: Landboarding at Muriwai? 10 months, 2 weeks ago #27751

I suspect my tires may be too soft as I can see them visibly bulging when I stand on my board on a concrete surface.

So other than Muriwai and Orewa are there any other good beaches or parks in Auckland? I guess it's hard to find a park with clean air and people not using it for sports.

@Scramble, cool... I'm looking to meet people to landboard with as I currently either go out by myself or with a mate who just watches. If you see a newbie with an 3m Flow it's probably me!

although its ideal to meet up with scramble , you will find almost all the local buggy folks to be pretty helpful and encouraging too.

ps moose. have you ever heard of the mosse meet? is you name moose fever a big coincidense or are you in the moose meet loop?

Re: Landboarding at Muriwai? 10 months, 2 weeks ago #27756

@Jimmy22, for sure.. if it's powered by a kite I don't care what it's pulling. Buggies look pretty fun too, and definitely on my todo list

@plummet, I've vaguely heard of it from lurking this forum, but no, mostly a coincidence as it's my usual forum handle.

Rex wheel and castor and Sheppards also has some interesting wheels in stock now. I'd love to spend a little time and try a few options. I have to finish cleaning up the workshop and make a new deck first.

every second time i go to Murs there is some random buggier out there i have never seen before , i can say us lot are good to deal with but i cant promise EVERY person is like us eh ? its like saying 100% of doctors are well skilled. some may be trying to help but not know a lot too, a little know how is dangerous Still i havent yet met a buggier that wasnt cool, but im sure the law of averages is going to catch up one day.

Just stick some trucks on that planker... but does it make him a boarder?

PS. Yeah selling the Libre seems to have taken a ment-Al toll on the poor chap.
