following on from another classic event at the blue balls buggy bash hosted by Charley, our focus turns to the next one... the moose meet

events should be held on saturday and sunday of the moose so people who need to travel big distances can make it

hard sand race in triangle or more complex shape with all down wind turns, 750m long straights, hopefully with a reverse grid start over a good number of laps to make it interesting and give everyone a chance to have the lead for a time during the race.

and a dune race on a shortish narrow diamond shape from large dune crest to next large dune creast with turns on the face of the dune , also down wind turns . the basic idea is the dune race will not have unfamiliar terrain once a lap or two has been done but will be over rougher terain. (thats an idea that has been brewing for a while) perfect for the high tide time we will have.

Any and all ideas, assistance materials etc will be a big help. I am hoping our charley can continue the obvious success of his racing formats. theres the base for discussion now lets build on it and make it a good one.

and i just need help keeping really sick people away from me long enough to attend this one.. !

the king of the rain race by charloie was proof that any race, nomater what format .... is cool.
anything is possible, everybody has ther own ideas...at the end of the day the race master makes the track and makes the roules and tells everybody how it works..
you definently cant make all thepeople happy all the time...it the course is fair for all involved and thats all you can do then thats fine, if you can make it intresting thats even better, if you can add a splash of fun then your laughing..

for me an ideal flat course would have a bit of everything but not complicated and easy to tweak for the wind conditions to get it to flow nicely..... a bit like this..

its safe, got a bit of everyhting, faster than a shortcourse but has enuff corners to make it tactical.

yip looks good dude, the idea is to publicize the courses in advance so everyone can practice the needed turns and get good at it , keeping the racing closer and more interesting. if that broad reach is 750m long you are reading my mind Al. jhust gotta keepo the upwind part real because some kites point much higher than others and we want to cater for all comers, the second up wind looks like a tack i s needed or a longer up wind and 180 up wind turn , cool

I will happily wave the flags and hold the clipboard at the moose providing I can still get plenty of riding time.

The most crucial piece of info that needs to go out is the start time. That does not need to be decided yet but the moose is too big to go around looking for people at race time. We have had racing at the moose before where we have called people only to find that they were 2kms away in a dune. If people are serious about racing they need to know when to meet and actually get there.

Low tide saturday is 4.30.
The hard sand race will be sometime after 2pm probably around 3 or 3.30 if you want a big flat beach to set a fancy course.
If everyone knows when the pre race meeting is then we can just set the course have the meeting and start the race.

A soft sand race can be held anytime provided there is wind but again people must know where and when to meet. If we can tell people in advance and have a notice hung up somewhere then everybody who is keen should make the start.

I would be keen on having 2 hard sand races on the Saturday to decide the western circuit champs. A short course race to gather everyone up and get everyone warmed up and then a nice big race on a multi leg course with time between for kite changes and tweaking of buggies changing tyres that sort of thing. The short course could be run earlier on less beach. At the blue balls we had a great triangle course on a surprisingly small amount of beach.

yea, a good long straight so everyone can get a bit lose, dont forget a lot of kites also go very fast on a broad reach aswell as upwind, also not fair if the racekites get away on straights aswell as upwind..its tricky, generaly the racekites seem to grow leggs after 60kph, wich should be plenty fast enuff for any race, after 60 you need a drag race so your atleast all going in the same general direction!!

top idea for race meet time noticeboard.....write the time of the race on an old bit of fabric and sent it up with a lifter so it can flap to its hearts content. nobodys gonna miss that....will look a bit wired, but it just might work.its the moose afterall, whiteboards are so boring these days.

hard sand :::: meeting point on Saturday at 2pm at the camp entrance, where it hits the hard sand, the rest shall be told to you then. racing start shortly after
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Soft sand :::: practise on saturday morning , race meeting point 11 am SUNDAY at the kiteworks vehicle. racing shortly after

all turns on soft sand will be down wind turns, ill draw a basic map of the intended layout for the soft sand event soon for comment/improvment.

i have 5 good flags for racing markers to bring for any race.

We need one hooter powered by breath or pump up bottle for the race starter

Rules : helmets compulsory, no Kevlar lines, buggy max weight wet and sandy , ballasted 60kgs.

Al is making the moose soft sand trophy out of old scrap steel in a mystery shape.

3 official soft sand races first is a wide start all in, second a reverse grid from the first race finishing positions dnfs count as equal last. last race is a reverse grid based on first two races points, points system by charlie. (im liking your F1 points )

howcome were having 3dune races and only one flat race? is the flat race going for the western circuit chapms??
dude if you have practice on sat morn for a race and then the actual race a day later the wind is likley to have shifted, sure youl know the course but all your lines/angles will have changed and probably your kite size..best to have practice an hour before the race if the course is set by then...its all up to the wind, you can plan ahead forever but if the wind shifts on you itl change everything.
that track i drew is based on a S/westerly to ss/west....you can move it around abit but if you want your 750m long straight youl need a really low tide if it goes south/north..
i havnt even thought about southerly/northerlys....they only really leave you with shortcourses or somethin in the dunes, iv never been up ther in a northerly altho it would be very very good for getting out the back and home again... easterlys are great if your sitting at camp having a beer...southeasterlys are very cool and give you acces to the huge dune face on the solstice moose video.southerlys ar like northerlies but leave you stranded miles downwind and westerlies generaly get me airborn off most bumps.

Welcome back

Al , point taken ok we will wing it

meeting times and days remain the same.

hard sand race is charley’s baby I’m sure it will be as epic as ever and fulfill our cravings, it just needs to be a fair and balanced course so race kites have some issues and so do stable slower kites, eg a good straight and some tight turns some where in there
(i like the course you drew Al, it has those qualities

soft sand is another story and we are in uncharted territory, i have some basic ideas but i see your point about wind direction. cant kite the shelly bits where the birds nest so it will be dunes one way or another, im sure we can sort it. something shortish and basic so all can enjoy. yip 3 races for soft last two reverse grid to keep it close and fun for all. shortish races like maybe 15 mins or so many laps etc. no helmet no race though, that’s virtually the only rule other than courtesy and common sense
