ME!
10m manta cross off beach session which was abit gak. so i headed to my hill for some hill gliding to find 0 to 20 knots nasty. a few interesting flights later i called it a day!
not ideal sessions but better that no session at all.

I've eyed up 20 foot drop off 0n the hill paddock i'm keen to glide off. Need to wait for the right wind/direction and it will be all on. hopefully get someone to photo such madness.

PS followed up by a 1.5hr mountainbike night ride.....
PSS Cast is coming off tomorrow! whoot!.

just remember the wind goes backwards near the top of a cliff and gives huge lift at the edge, so study your paraglider 101 first , cast off eh ?

indeed but this is a roling hill with a step down in it with the wind coming cross on.... so it wont have any majot vorticies/wind lips etc. but i will test by going small first before the bigger launch.

Yeah they rock! I still have one of the first Scimitars Decay ever made. I can spend a whole afternoon heelsiding out and toesiding in till I have blisters on my feet!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. My 4-week old just got out of Starship yesterday too after he got bronchiolitis from his sister. I've been a sick daddy day care all week with a sick toddler. Man it's good to breath through my nose. I've long since forgotten about kiting again. But enough of that... only two months till spring. Hope the moths don't eat ripstop!

i should start a spread sheet of gusters kite equipement. its truely enourmous. every time i think i know what he has he busts out a comment of another item lurking in the shed.

Does your car fit in the garage anymore guster? i doubt it.

i'm trying to go for a kite but its raining hard and only 12 knots..... hope it eases then i'll be out there either water or land.

ME , It was EPIC day from sun rise(6:30am) to sun set(5 pm)

You wouldn't have liked it Al
you lazy, maybe next you will make a effort to get out of bed get well soon

The wind was only 15 to 20 knot and square on
the dune was only hard and flat + supper fast
I only got 49 km/hr with the 5m Method and kite bike in the DUNES
and 62 km/hr on the beach with the 5m Method and kite bike
and about 80 km/hr in the buggy

mighty gannet living the dream..... awesome.

I too manage a session. but not a 12hr one

Went to fitzroy.... cross off and 5 knots. cained to back beach. 20+knots and cross on! the wind was up and down like whores draws with anything from sun to torrential rain.... so i fired up the 8m light and jumped in the water for the first kitesurf in 7 weeks. powered/ underpowered/powered..... rain/ shine . i didn't give a shit i was roosting and it was a sweet session. carved up a few waves. nice.

yes unfortunately it did rock, 71 kmph on the Ozone method for me and 72.8 on the vapor 2.7 . utterly amazing dunes, hard packed by rain but also filled in by soft sand. we set up petes faring into the soft sand and left it a few hours and had our own wind tunnel testing going on. i loved every minute. very sorry you couldnt make it Al. i have already missed my share of mooses due to needing a rest.

foxton : landboard evening/ night sesssion 10m manta 20 knots cross shore fading to 12 or so. tacked my way upwind from the car park to the river mouth zapped back and forth then down winded back to the car. slapped some flashy lights on the kite which looked cool when the sun wind down.

I've got both hands in the air today and waving them around trying to create some wind as it's as still as here in Chch which is no good for the Kite event out at Wigram this arvo, what a bummer.

Nigel NO MATES and I went for a early morning hoon.
up at 5.45am . on the beach at 6
armed with the kite bike and the Ozone access 4m + my head lamp.
up and down the beach for a hour before day light, Awesome, with a max speed of 55.6 kms
then Nigel and I did some racing, figure 8 flag race ,
I had it all over Nigel , but he must have been on my tail all the way.
Nigel is not very good at taking photos , but he got this shot

Nigel also seems to be slow to keep up and terrible at taking photos!

I was there in spirit G. Used up all my brownie points in the shed the day before. Beach looked nice and packed after all that rain. Wind was perfect looked great for a 13m Frenzy kitebike combo too!

blimey, even i could take a better picture than nigel, he sucks... talk about perspectivly challenged!! had i have been their i would have been able to get atleast 5 feet on him!

im sorry gannet..
ill try and make it up to bou by taping a camera t my forhead and running round trying to take awsome pictures

i was suppose to be at that session with gannet and didnt turn up.not a very good team player...unfortunetly to many thworts and not enuf time on that occasion..biggest one was inability to get new buggy on the roofrack on my own and couldnt take it to bits as all tools at work.
have to build a towbar.

That OK,

I could focus on my balance and turning the kite bike ( as Nigel doesn't talk much)
+ been dark was so cool, I'm going to do more night rides .

Nigel was to lazy to get the tripod out of the truck and then the camera battery went flat

and I was having to much fun to stop and change up to the 7m frenzy.
OH Well, at least the 4m access didn't drag me over the fence, I'm shore Nigel no mates would have just watched and laughed

the head lamp got a good run at the moose on the first kite bike outing weekend
so this was the second kite time ,it's well worth the dollars

" actually relaxing helps " should I say something ! I know you lot are thinking it.

HMMM

well wind is a tantalising 13 knot onshore right now! but dammit i have to work and also have to use my lunch hour up with parent/teacher interview.... aaarg.

maybe i need to indulge in some night kiting too? only problem is my local spot is interesting in the daylight with rock gardens, boulders, drift wood, deep puddles and random soft bits. it would be extreeeeeme at night time. i suppose i am not adverse to extreme.

if i ever get back up to auckland and kite with you guys there's be photos and footage galore from all sorts of weird angles. the gopro takes photo's every 2 secs. so i can belt along behind dudes taking all sorts of auto matic photo's.

i'd spend a good day scraping the beach smooth then turn up the following day to find it all stuff up again. that beach changes significantly day by day.

i used to let it piss me off. but with my current set up i quite enjoy it. it adds flavour and skill to what could be an otherwise average day. it certainly keeps you on your toes when your fangin over baby head sized rocks and 40+kph.

There is something a little creepy about that comment

Not alot of wind where I am (Kaitaia/90 Mile) at the moment, so not good for learning to buggy. But it was an excellent chance (well, actually I just wanted more and more wind after the first few minutes) to learn the ropes of my new 6m Access XT (Thanks Butch ). Haven't had much chance to get out since I bought the damn thing! ... but all is about to change

Ouch!!!

I grew up in the far north so I know all the best secret spots etc...

Had 12-13 knot winds on 90 mile today!!! Perfect for the very first run in the buggy! WICKED!

Had such a blast (and managed 25kph on my very first run), and it felt like we were the only ones on the beach. I must admit that I am having trouble with 2 things in the buggy:
1) I can't stop! Seriously I have no idea how to stop. I bring the kit up and turn a little upwind and I seem to out run it and it starts yanking me back the other way. Another time I pulled the exit lever; the kite came down and then I rode over the lines and wound them around the wheel a couple of times
2) I'm too bloody long! At 25 kph when I'd try turn I'd get a bit wobbly and I have my knees way up! Bit awkward.

But the kite is a dream to fly. I had it on the ground quite a few times. Had it over the dunes etc etc. but no tangles and no problems! amazing! Pure joy.

to stop keep the kite close to the beach while flying along and turn the buggy away from the kite, the buggy will slide against the power of the kite. before a turn , slide until your at walking pace and then make the turn

worked through lunch and hit the beach at 4.

another onshore 8-12 knots. the kitesurf boys were looking dispondent i was grinning from ear to ear. nothing like finishing off the working week with twilight cruise on the landboard.

cruised in a rather relaxing 40km maxing out at 47kph. dicked around with the gopro on the tripod! taking some weird angles and photo's

PS gannet thats how you take a pic of your own kite!!!! i expect more pics and vids now the El Gannetor he the gopro!

you need to come to the moose meet merk, you will learn so much so fast. and at least one of the days every year is awesome. it is the best event of the year for buggies apart from the recent racing which has been very cool indeed. the moose will have racing as well !!

I know! I really want to come but its not looking good for me
I hate to make excuses but I NEED to finish my masters by the end of October and I just had a couple of weeks off that I shouldn't have taken

I'd love to come and learn some stuff and put faces to names.

If I don't make it (which is most likely) I'm planing on being up in the far north over summer (maybe even for a couple of months) so I might try jack up a meet or two... maybe even venture down to the Moose.

hey merk..

stopping is one of the best bits about buggying....

all you have to think is "handbrake turn" because thats all it is.

but its more complicated bacause you have a kite in the sky, follow jummys lead and keep the kite low, couple of feet off the deck....and leave it there for the duration of the stop.....just leave it low and steer away against its pull, this also keeps the lines good and tight and gives good snappy responce from the kite setting you up for the turn..

what will happen is as you slowdown from speed you transition between a moving object and a static one, when you static fly the kite flys from one edge if the window to the other, so as you stop the kite starts flying to the edge of the window, this is good because power is bleeding away and by the time you do come to a stop the kite will be right at the edge ready for your next input.

things to be aware of.

A..HIGH SIDING THE BUGGY...lean against the kite, as hard as you can try and put your head on the outside tyre....increase tyre pressure for slipprier tyres.KEEP THE KITE LOW!!
B..soming to a compleate halt and finding yourself pointing directly into the wind with your kite behind you....before you do stop straighten the buggy back into the normal direction and put a foot down..
C...backend overtakes front...this is unnerving but really fun when you get your head round it....your about to 180, and thats bad...really steer into the slide as hard as you can, if the backend really lets go and truely overtakes the front, kill the kite...brakes on hard...you will endup rolling backwards, probably over your lines...try to correct first, as you get better you wont get into situations with this much oversteer, and when you do its because you probably want to...this is the beginning of 360z

this is all powersliding really is, and is one of the most fun things about buggying....get stuck in, think TODAY IM GONNA POWERSLIDE MY BUGGY and before you know it youl be singing born to be wild to yourself as you swing your buggy around bits of seeweed going fully sideways.

have fun.

ah ha. busted out for a session after work. the kite surfers were sticking up 7mtrs so i thought it would be good to slam the 8m light up for a landboard. The boys were powered on 7's and the monster grannies could have held more power!!

but indeed it was a nasty session 20-30 knots and gusty as F>>>. wet soggy beach.

still clocked up a few more miles.

Re: Now put your hand up if you went for a kite today! 1 year, 8 months ago #25078

Very odd wind today. It seemed to be splitting at the bowl. As I tacked up past the bowl it turned into a run and I had to tack back again. Trouble was the tack was faster than the run. Odd. Very odd. In the end I just played in front of the car park for a while. 4 mtr blade. Moguls and stuff. Very enjoyable but not so fast.

Yahoo first time to Foxton Beach today. Nice beach, lots of sand and some wind. How desperate are we though. Drove 2 hours from Wellington, spent 1 hour on the beach and then raced 2 hours home to get one of my boys to work. Mainly a recc mission. Find Butch's shop(door was closed, should of rung) find the Beach, and a quick fly. Now we just need to plan for a day trip.

If time is an issue then theres some good beaches closer to wellington. Wakanai. which is abit thin. but its wider down by the esturary and up past the houses. Waikawa is a really nice spot and one of my favourites. Waitarere is also super sweet. but if your going that far you might as well go to foxton and have a session with the mighty Butch.

that has got to be the all time most stylish obe EVER, as they go that was just so darn smooth..
with out doubt some classic footage there...what the hell were you doing with the kite??

thoes carve turns also look awsome from that angle..

bit of class there pete, you should be proud....obe,z never looked so good.

now we have a new competation ar the moose....use the buggys as a rolling takeoff pad for human kitegliding comp down a hill at the moose, see who ets the furthest!!

" .what the hell were you doing with the kite?? "

Hmmm , the wrong thing would be the answer to that

Note, next time don't kite loop upwards when heading towards the water

well that sorta looks like motor gp but backwards and steering with the feet. all the angled cornering. nice.

AL i don't think that step off was unplanned at all. i think it was gannet weaving his kite flying mastery for the worlds most stylish kiteloop dismount!

24hr on the kite bike will be very hardcore. looks like it needs every ounce of concentration just to stay upright!....
