TOPIC: Raglan Preview

Raglan Preview 2 years, 4 months ago #22831

I just got back in from The Beach. There is still a big sand shelf. The tidal zone below the shelf is quite steep and has lots of exposed rocks close to the water. The main beach around the corner is not as bad as last week and it was quite wide a few days ago. It is still a lottery as to whether we get a massive wide flat beach or a beach full of pot-holes moguls ripples and maybe even some water and sand bars. The 100mtrs or so close to the land is very soft.

Please do not set up right out the front of the car park. Load up your buggies and head west/south 500 mtrs until you get past the rocks. The buggy zone will be from the rocks to the big log a bit before the surf club tower. There is no excuse for riding around where all the picnickers and swimmers are when there is a big empty section in between. Because of the exposed rocks we will not be racing in front of the car park unless that is the only place the wind will allow.

There is no raised terrain riding allowed EVER on Raglan Beach. It does not matter whether any one is watching or not. In Raglan you must stay on the flat or we will all be banned forever. I have handled this for 15 years. You folks can handle it for a couple of weekends a year. Mike got a bollocking the other day just for riding close to the dunes.
Please do not smash the edge of the big sand shelf. I know it is tempting but the foreshore here is very fragile and a lot of people have worked hard to stop all the land from falling into the sea. The kitesurfers constantly kick the bank down by the toilets.
Please don't follow their lead.

The flag drops at 1.30 pm sun 10. Fliers meeting at 1pm. All other activities are purely social. This is not a kite festival or a buggy meet it is a race.

Saturday there may be a boat trip to the north side. This is Mikes project. $5.00 a head if it happens. Buggies will have to be packed down.

If everybody acts responsibly this may happen again. If not Raglan will be off the calendar.

We usually park at the car park on Riria Kereopa Memorial drive.
At the end of the road past where the kitesurfers park up. We will be setting up right next to the Harbour mouth. You can walk down the track from Wainui reserve if you want but it can be painfull after a big session.

ok,

hows the race going to work?

i presume there'l be a flag at either end and we do a number of laps. and we count our own laps?
how many laps is the course?

ps.... slap some rocks and boulders in there. it all adds to the fun dodging hard obstacles.

pss long range forecast looks like westerly 10-12 knots.

It all depends on the wind. I(f we get a nice westerly of some sort then it will be a nice long course with 10 -12 laps. If the wind is east or north then we may have to alter the plan. There wil be flags. Hopefully it will be a dog leg course with a reach a run and a tack. Laying the course is all very nice but throw a tack in and we will sort out the racers from the speedsters.
Starbord rules apply to the buggy but people will be expected to keep their kites in a position that will allow others to pass without having to significantly altering their line.

I will be lap counting and marshaling one end. The other end will be up to your own honesty. I hope that if someone loses a position due to avoiding a child or blokart then people will give that position back.

nw winds up to 13 knots.... maybe.

I have a lifetime of waiting for wind that was promised. I don't trust them. They are liars. Dishonest parasites that suck the life out of ordinary people who just want to know what to wear when they get up in the morning.
