cruising back from raglan today i got to thinking about a dune board for the moose and i think i have the answer.

Testing in the soft sand today on the grannies i can ride all but above the high tide line. so only dry sand is a no go. and then i can still churn through it if i'm powered up enough.

it got me thinking the grannies are almost there but not quite.

So a mad idea popped into my head. dual granny moose board. yep you read right 2 grannies per side per axle. a grand total of 8 graniies.. Octogranny if you will!.

Now with octogranny the board will be pushing 14-15kg. (slighty less than my mountainbike). so its heavy but shouldn't dislocate my hips.

Devious plas are already afoot in my head.

of course octogranny my not work either. the diameter of the wheels could be the killer. only one way to find out.

Years ago, there was a board that came outta Japan as a prototype called the bubble board (or wheels) the wheels were HUGE and designed for riding on the volcanic loose stoney beaches, but I can't seem to find anything on it now

But I was wondering about this myself, something to ride around the dunes and jumping off them is pretty sweet

yes i've seen that board a dew times on the net.

community.flexifoil.com/showthread.php?t...ight=soft+sand+board

expensive! the price on the link works out to 1600nzd....

but if i can find some similar wheels i'll be all on for dunes. if i can get into the dunes it will be supreme!

I also though about light aircraft tyres like off a cesna. i'm going to check those out and see if any are suitable.

After our discussion yesterday and looking at this thread you revived, you already had the answer bro.

These tyres would be perfect i reckon.
Its a choice between the 42 cm ones or the 30 cm ones.

Once the wheels get over 12" you have to redesign the whole truck to lower the CoG and make the steering work properly too. Also notice with 16" wheels the weight or rather inertia was also becoming an issue.

The whole tilt steering thing goes out the window. Kiwi in motion had some board that converted board tilt to automotive style steering linkages. Else if you're just cruising the quadrilution worked well on 12" wheels.

I actually played with 12" wheels for a while. I used the old ones from my first buggy.

i'm sure they would too but at $300+ each thats just too much more me.

check this out.

www.smartmarine.co.nz/lightweight-mini-c...e-wheels-p-7838.html

though at 22cm high the diameter might be a little small.

i might check them out when i'm in auckland.

Ohhhh. they look even nicer and only $150nz for a the whole dingy frame thing with 2 wheels. might be able to score wheels for even less.

www.wheeleez.com/beach-wheel-specs.php
$67 usd for the right wheels. thats around $115 each plus freight.... still too much for me.

guster my revo style trucks can be lowered futher so i'd easily be able to fit 12" wheels and still have the correct ride height.

dont wanna piss on your picnic, but Sandboarding with a kite on anything but a massively steep dune is pretty lame. we tried a few times with very little success.
Stick to the wheelez bro, itll be the most expensive dune board in the world, and your claim to fame....

i thought the sandboard wouldn't be ideal but at $20 it was worth a try.... since yourve already tried it i'll flag that and keep the hunt for wheels going.

the wheeleez wheels will be ultimate.... but i don't have the spare funds to purchase so i'll look for a cheape alternative in the mean time.

i think this in an awsome puzzel to try and solve plummet....i have a theory, flat profile tyres will work better than a curved profile for a landboard...the reason is that when i have my bigfoots pumped right up hard the curveature actualy cuts into the soft sand and has to push it out the way like a plough, but letting the tyres down, slows you down as we all know....so flat profile tyres pumped up hard would roll awsomely, tho im thinking you will have sliding and drifting issues if the sidewall to tread profile is to sharp and angular like the gocart tyres, but thoes little grey ones look like the snizzle for this job to me, without being huge like the jap board.
good luck.

diameter makes the wheel roll the best so keep the diameter as big as you dare.

Buddy here has one & sells them ... www.kiteboarding.jp/baloon.php

IIRC it uses RollEZ wheels which can be got for about US$80 each - trick would be modifying the trucks to take them.

... wonder how well it edges?

yes the wheeleez will be the best bet. they are the same wheels as the balloon board uses.
jimmy there are 42cm wheeleez available.... that migfht just be madness on a board!
i agree Al with a real sharp side profile sliding will be an issue and the reality is thats how you turn when powered up.

i think i'll just have to save my pennies for the right wheels.... which means the duneboard probably wont be going for the moose this year! bummer.

hey well look on the bright side plummet, youl have no excuse but to pilot in a buggy and, well....youl never look back
im hearing good things about mantas and buggys, were looking at a possible revolution i think.....need more racing.
you making it to the moose this year?
your welcome in the van with us again if you want.

what about the superbarrows....barrow tyres on fat rims...me and jimmy almost made them tubeless the other day and im sure its possible with glue, that would save you a bit over a kilo of wheel weight and ther nice and lowprofile compared to a barrow, probably 45mm less in diamiter..

My feelings are injured Plummet! Here I thought you're coming up for the spirit of the Moose. To kite, hang and have fun... now you tell us you just want us for our beach.

To be honest there's usually always one day worth kiting. Some make a 4 day event of it to even the odds. The other day is well worth the entertainment as someone will get bored and start trying to offer/burn dead kites to the wind gods or just blow stuff up!

true.... and if the forecast is for 1 good day thing i'll arrive. but if its for 5 knot easterlies and torential rain its just too far to come. bear in mind i have 3 kids 5 and under and have very few times a year i can break away for a man weekend. i have to choose wisely.

note that the moose last year was glorious. blokes, kites, living like cavemen on the beach. bombfires bbq'd steak oooh yeah! good times.....

On the topic of sand boards and kites, I know a guy who tryed, he ended up melting the bottom of it under all the friction heat.

ok so i went to the mooseland today to be confronted with sweet fa wind . however at the height of the biggest gust maybe 7knots i did some boarding on the dune flat area which is kinda soft and hard at the same time. i managed to get some tracking looping the kiting.

i've decided the dual grannies will be the first test. standard single grannies would work sort of when well powered.

so..... i figure another set of grannies will privide the extra surface area i need not role rather than sledge..... its a cheaper trial too.

i'll aim to have a set going for the moose.
