Long week end ahead, I was wondering if some of the south islanders would be keen to go explore this area blessed by good wind statistics
http://windfinder.com/forecast/cape_campbell

Not sure if weather forecast is that good for now, as a northerly flow would be probably better.
A look on Google Earth reveals some potentially good spots, rivermouth, peeling waves, etc... Quite appealing actually.
I guess there must be some access roads to go to the saltworks or to the lighthouse.
Any experience in this area or on the wider Blenheim/Kaikoura area would be useful and welcome. Maybe not for this time if weather not so good, but for an other week end.

There is road and walking track access, but I'd more worried about the cliffs and big ass rocks!!
Your best bet is Carters Beach 5 mins north of the cape, SW is cross on I think. Good long beach with good surf and waves, but the local airstrip is very local and parallal to the beach. When it comes to packing up dont hang round is my advise.
Just south of Tauranga bay behind the cafe/bar is Nine Mile beach. Drive south along the beach road to the river mouth ( about 9 miles?) for flat stuff. This beach itself is pure WEST COAST! very big and rough. You want to be fully lit, pick your biggest kite for the wind. I dont know many people that have got out the back here? ANYONE putting thier hand up??

Hmmm,
I think there is confusion here. The region you describe is the Westport area, around Cape Foulwind, where I had quite a few sessions already (and never been at the back btw due to some massive west coast conditions).

I was talking here about Cape Campbell, North East of the SI, near lake Grassmere, almost in the Cook Strait.
Every time I've been driving around there, it was really windy, the grass looks like it is wind blown all the time and usually people tend to do saltworks in high wind areas only.
Have you ever been there/heard of someone who... ? I know people windsurf the rivermouth next to Blenheim, but a wee bit further south, and further east looks like the place to be...

Bugger should of read it proper, Cape something? Saltworks Cementworks....bugger

There's a beach past Cape Campbell winery, Cable Station road south of Blenheim. First right after the Saltworks comimg from CHCH way. Never kited there but seems like a place to start. Steep/deep dumpy beach wave.
Marfells Beach where there's a DOC campsite may be a go? Right turn before the Saltworks.
And there is so many options along the Kaikoura coast.
