haha thats about as much "action" as toilet paper gets, Looks nice when you get it, but it soon gets covered in shit then when it gets wet it falls apart.

Hey Lee,

how are ya?

Will Best kites stay with this old style arc for 2005/2006 season or will they follow the leaders in kite design by going a more flatter/semi bridle style of kites?

I hear the advantages are huge.

Sorry did'nt mean to say "leaders" I meant Takoon and I think Cabrinha?

I a wait your reply

Don't get your lines in a knot!

Cheers

Yes, Best already have a bridle style kite for those looking for the light wind advantage using traditional materials to keep the price well down. The 2005 BFK has been an exceptional performer. It is in stock now so no need to wait until 2006.

For those with the $$ the Hellfish is the alternative / upgrade option.
Playing with new materials, was an obvious design direction to explore.
I see Doyle in Mt Wellington have just gone that way with their sails too. Not quite the same thing but definately the direcion sailmakers are headed.

It will be interesting to see everyones directions for sure.

Best pushed the design envelope well forward with the Hellfish. And FYI it too has a bridle on the larger sizes. I am yet to see all the details on that.

Hope to have my first Hellfish later this week.... should be interesting indeed.

Sorry Lee don't agree.

So what you are saying is "that if you get the old planes from the NZ Airforce and build them out of carbon fibre and titanium, their going to fly much faster, smoother etc, etc.

Na, you need to change the overall areo dynamics when things start to get lighter faster.

The new kites some of the main brands are playing with at present for next season (06) 100% depower just by pushing the bar away or letting it go. Where ever in the power zone. Hook into the chicken loop and Bobs your uncle!

I'm going to wait! Me old kites fly just fine and I'm looking forward to seeing what the other brands are going to come up with.

That's my Best option anyway.

Well said Snider Carl,

It's good to see some out there like Cabrinha & Takoon who are pushing the r&d side with something new from the guy who gave us such a wicked sport, not just changing the fabric !!!

Yes lee some of the fabrics that have proven to be stiff & hold their form for great up wind advantge in the "sailing industry" but with no life span, great when your racing and there is no budget.
Talking budget looks like Best is going to sting you for an oldfish !

bo bo.

Best have started a huge design debate this year which is great.
The materials are not the only things they are playing with either, you can be sure of that. I agree it will be interesting to see the design Takoon and Cabrinha are both using. Sounds like this clip is what they are building and hyping up.
Look how it flys... Here is video clip.
kiteboard.com/data/multimedia/308_nova.mpeg
(I think you need Qtime media player to view it)

Most riders want a blance of stability and an excellent fast turning kite.
You can see how the Hellfish flys here:
media.bestkiteboarding.com/videos/hellfish_keysday1.5.wmv
Interesting comparison.

It is not a kite for everyone, but riders looking for a new kite it has to be on the radar. And by the time 2006 comes around who knows what eyeryone will be releasing. For 2005 Best have an amazing kite ready for release.

Naish, Cabrinha, North, Slingshot and the rest are all going to keep designing kites, no worries there.

Sorry Lee,

Still don't agree... I don't think your comparing apples with apples here.

The hellfish is quite clearly a old design kite made with new materials.... icing on an old cake!

Now lets wait and see if Best comes out with a new design kite with new materials... now that would interest me.

But then the other brands would most likely come out with something else to compete.

I feel your frustration Lee... I'm holding out till spring.

Sorry no sale on the dead fish.

Best regards

Snider Carl

C'mon keep it positive guys.
Best, Takoon and Cabrinha are bringing new toys to the market.
Here is a look at the Cabrinha crossbow.
They are making a tube kite that flys like a foil.

You can read the press/marketing release on ikiteboarding.com
www.ikiteboarding.com/article_detail.aspx?id=146

"...a hybrid kite offered by Takoon and Cabrinha- a cross between a foil and an inflatable kite.

Bruno Legaignoux, the inventor and patent holder of the inflatable kite, designed a new type of kite. The kite is a hybrid between a foil and an inflatable kite. The reasoning behind this is simple : Foil kites have a more aerodynamic shape, and inflatable kites turn faster. Put the two together, add a good safety and depower system, and kiteboarding as we know it takes a new direction.

Bruno Legaignoux has patented this design. So far, two companies will release kites based on this concepts. Takoon is the first company to bring out a kite called the Takoon Nova. Cabrinha brought a license from Bruno Legaignoux and will be releasing their version of this kite soon, called the Cabrinha Crossbow.."

Very fat tubes eh.

Interesting idea. One I first saw in 2001 on Bic kites, see also Seasmik.

For Best Kites (NZ) you see me at Anabatic Kiteboarding.
For Cabrinha (Akl) see Windsurfing South Pacific in Takapuna.
Takoon (NZ), they list a John Begg from SPK on their web site.

The first Best Hellfish has just arrived, so I'm stoked about that.
I will put a full review up on my web site soon.
Trying to get a few more sessions on it first.
Pretty amazing kite to fly. Well balanced, very fast and agile.
Wicked for wave riding the 13m turns like a 10m on a 45cm bar.
A very fast kite with loads of power.
Bring on the 13m weather!

It is an interesting design and riders will ultimately decide between the 'ARC' shape or the 'Flat' shape.

The 2006 Nemesis also has a foiled leading edge and a Cuben fiber construction.
