I am heading off to Whangarei for the weekend.
I will be staying at Urquharts Bay, next to Ocean Beach.

Has any one kite surfed there before?? And have any pointers?

Take your surfboard. Sick waves at Ocean Beach, and at Proctors reef over the hill to the left.
Kiting might be dodgy, Ocean beach isn't really that wide and the waves can pack some punch. Over the hill at Proctors might be a better bet. The beach is much longer and more exposed.
Then again, I havn't actually kited there, only surfed, so I could be talking out of my arse..

I've have been kitesurfing there once, it's realy not a lot of place there, to both sides big riffs. I was out on a N--> NE. North was ok but NE was just bloody gusty! take your surfboard with you, there are some nice waves.

I was there last week just flying a kite on the beach in a SE wind and it was very gusty. Beach is pretty thin too and lots of people going for a walk on sunday (had to land the kite because of too many beach walkers).
