Planning to head south to Colac if weather permits, surely a bit late in the season, but the article from Kane in the last Stance makes it too appealing to wait 6 months for better days.

Took friday off as well for that purpose.

Backup plans to Westport or Golden Bay or somewhere else.
Anyone from Chch interested ?

Cheers

nah its not too late

spent 3 hours at the beach here in Dn today, not too cold at all

and the water is way warmer down there!

gimme a shout if you're going south, school holidays at work so can leave whenever.

sure I can find a spare bed here in Dunedin for sleepy heads too

Hey Doof

I was in Dunedin this week and went to check up on the seals at the south end of katiki (all present and correct). Couldn't help but notice the steady 15kt NE hooting in (and straight through the jacket), and wondered if anyone was taking part in it (this was on thursday) It was sunny with cute little waves and not a great white in sight....wish I'd bought some gear. I hope you all have fun at colac

hello there!

yeah I think we was out, prob at Aramoana playing with the sharks. It was a little light though.

But yeah we've been out plenty. We'll see what transpires for Anzac w/end.

Its not quite numb season yet, but it's coming........

Hope the prison island is treating you guys well.

Cold SW everywhere...
It looks more like a Westportish exodus, with maybe some not so cold SW conditions.
startup early friday.

Need a few hints or experience on the spots from local crew.
Carters Beach with cross cross off shore winds?
Tauranga Bay? Or just south of Tauranga Bay towards 9 miles beach.
Spotted on the AA westland map something like a lagoon behind 9 mile beach, that looks appealing to rest a bit after the waves, or more likely, the whitewater, any experience?

Still keen Neil ?

Yeah I think so. West sounds better than south, just nned to work out the spots..
Don't think lack of swell is going to be a problem...

Yup Carters works in a SW, just watch out for planes it's close to the airport. Actually they usually just come and ask the single line kites to stop flying as a plane comes in. It's slightly offshore but pretty clean wind. ONly seen it with a bung heal and haven't riden there.

Tauranga Bay is a bit sheltered from the SW, might work half way down but the waves aren't as good there. The south side of the head land should be good though. Kane and I went down the raod a bit to the lagoon entrance, it's got a bit of a bar with nice waves but we had crappy wind. The lagoon might be ridable in the right wind, it's narrow and long, just watch out for the power lines. The mouth of it is certainly doable and makes for nice flats between the waves, the currents can be a bit odd though. Whenever I've been there the SW has been pretty squally, almost no wind for 1 hour then 1/2 and hour of light rain and decent wind at maybe 20 knots. Most other people who have been there come back raving about how great it is, I'm just a jinks when it comes to that place. I also hoisted myself onto the beach from a reasonable height when all the water sucked out whci hurt my heal for a few weeks.

Raglan/Aotea for me, sounds like abit of a crew from Auck/Tau plus the growing number of locals

There will be a few Nelson crew south of Westport on Saturday, 9 mile the Charlston end? near the Lagoon?

Good SW predicted for onshore/cross on, also some good swell due on the west coast too.

And of course RAIN.

not going anywhere with that forecast

Lookin' like Waitara will be the spot for some wave riding on saturday the swell here is Huge.

Raglans been all over the show last few days with a bit too much south in the S.W.making for ugly gusts and wind shifts

Aotea is shaping up for sunday though the bar will be closing out...

Aotea was THE place this weekend - cracking sessions Saturday and today (nevermind the small rescue I required from the far side of the harbour when the wind swung South on Sunday). All you non-believers who headed back to the big smoke missed out on a great one.

Monday was freestyle-city; would have been a bit underpowered on the 7metre out of the current so we left the waves alone. Came in after 2 hours when the hands were getting a bit cold.

Brother SHAAAN !!!

So how did the chicken-legged one fare in the cape of eggmountain???

Did ya lay any eggs, hatch any plans, bed any chicks???

Wind readings down there on monday were light southerly... surely saturday was going off somewhere down there?

Re: Heading somewhere for anzac week end ? 7 years, 1 month ago #5061

alas - my naki sojourn was not to be due to a severely sprained ankle sustained on thursday night while climbing into a mate's boat. (he had hidden a spare tyre in the shadows and as i fully committed my weight, it tweaked my skater shoe at some outrageous angle thus rendering another pin useless for anything but forward heel / toe travel). this led to a severe bout of drinking which subsequently wreaked havoc with my work schedules.

a couple of days later when my head cleared, i did however drive north to another naki (whananaki) and hung out camping (and jetskiing as it turned out) with some kiting buddies who got out at the river mouth there and leapt around like monkeys on monday. damn them.

i'm sure everyone else had a right old time wherever they were on the west coast and screw you all too.

Yeah... But he who believes too much may find themselves stuck up shit creek without a paddle - or in this case stuck on the wrong side of a very wide harbour with no way of getting back in the freezing howling darkness!!!

Perhaps Dinghydog101 could elaborate on this belief-versus-grief theosophy...

Ahh my young Paduwan... the Force was strong in me that day. I had many options upon which to contemplate whilst wrestling my kite in the shifty zephyrs.

Option 1 was of course a reversion of the wind direction back to a more amenable SW, allowing me to self recover in style, claiming all along that I knew what the wind gods had in store.

Option 2 - the option I was most furiously working on - was to make my way 3/4ths of the way across said harbour on the now exposed sand banks and use the soon-to-be incoming current to drag my sorry arse back to the South shore. I calculated a 1 in 10 chance of this fine plan going awry, and a 0 in 10 chance of coming ashore with any dignity.

Option 3 involved the unwelcome intervention of outside parties. When Gav turned up with a tinnie complete with 5 horsepower motor, I reluctantly hopped on board. Option 2 was well into the execution phase, but he would have been insulted if I had turned down the offer of a lift after he'd scrambled back to the bach, unleashed the boat from its shackles, and self launched the vessel under the misguided notion that I was in trouble. Now I owe him one.

Option 4 of course was the imminent arrival by helicopter of the Swedish female kiteboarding team, complete with portable spa pool and tents for an overnight love-in on the Northern banks of the mighty Aotea harbour. Maybe next time.

At the risk of becoming yet another blown away clone answering himself & thrashing on about his psychotic hallucinations/beliefs - It was my sad lack of belief in making a h-pass the other day ( & accidental release of suicide-shackle ) that left me swimming half the raglan channel... kite going one way board the other!.....
Thanks T-rent for the recovery.

Thought i better add this gem as i tend to rag on my friend the fox, so to even things up had better keep him fueled with stuff to fire back with!

This in no way affects Katastrophic-Kite-Kooks (K.K.K.) standing as the most rescued & mishap-ridden individual in Raglan... This is also taking into account gynoguy & his various exploits.
