I am flying to CHC on Thr and thought I would get some feedback..
Would I need to pay extra for luggage?
3 kites, wetty and a board..

Any one else from Aucks flying on thr at 2:30pm ?
Jamie and I are flying back on Monday at 4:30pm.

Who all from Auckland is going to the Nationals?

I've flown Dunedin - Auckland return a coupla times and never had a problem,

I had two boards and two kites both times and overnight bag.

If it's in a nice easy bag and you get to the check in REALLY early and don't try and chat up the checkin chick and are nice and organised with tickets ready and stuff, and make it really easy for them you should get through OK.

Only time I had trouble with excess baggage was with a Thai van driver, those guys are really stubborn.

Three kites, two bars, a board, harness and a wettie in a coffin bag no longer than 1.8m else a $20 handling fee. Hard to stick to the 20kg limit on baggage though. Can't recall what the price per overweight kilo is but they won't take any bags over 32kg's.

Practically living in the wettie over the weekend anyway. Just throw what's left in a shoulder bag. Sometimes they'll check that but if it doesn't weigh more than 7kg's if I recall they don't even look at it. Just remember big bags don't fit in overhead compartments on Link flights.

Most of the airlines charge $5/kg overweight.

Looking forward to seeing you all down here.

Happy kiting

I also look forward to staying at Club Kay again! Just hope I get a little more time on the water than the last trip. Maybe even try a few of the newer toys! 8)

I've done the Chch - Akl flight more than a few times in the last year.

I find Qantas the most gear friendly, esp if you book in early. Pack your gear into a single bag if possible and don't go over the 32kg mark and you should be right.

Taking your clothes in a carry-on also helps.

Yes they do have a $5 per kg charge BUT they also have a $20 flat rate for some sports equipment like bikes and snowboards. Even when my baggage has been over weight I've never paid more than $20.

With Air NZ I've had to pay over $60 (each way!) at times for my kite equipment. Because of this I've stopped travelling with them.

I called Air NZ aa second time

They told me it was at their discretion, which does not make it easy. I left a message for the manager of baggage to see if they could make it clearer - and they never got back to me - last year I had to pay $200 ($100) each way - Yep we got ripped off....

You see - if they see 15 kiteboarders with bags (within kg allowance) on the same flight - I reckon they will want your money ($20 each way now?). Could be another case of making money form grey areas - the fact I called air nz customer services and they told me it should be ok for free don't mean shit - as I found out last year....

been out at sumner in boardies only a few times lately, never really done that before here, the water is maybe warmer than usual. Hopefully it stays like this for Feb, warm and wickedly good wind. You guys should only need to bring shorties or thinskins.

actually craig of dunedin, i'd rather that than be forced to go out on the glorified sewerage pond, which is where I'm 90% sure it'll be held.

That was fine up until yesterday Kane - a day of S wind and a little rain and the estury has gone from 24deg water to about 12deg - called yesterday mornings session short as I was tuning blue.

More S/rain due in the next couple of days - bring your full suits crew - it's likely to be a little chilly for the comp.

Good news is the 5 day forecast has NE predicted for Friday.
