you south islanders are so far behind the times. The Nationals were held in Auckland over the last few days at Shoal Bay.
Great wind and some excellent riding by all those that turned up. Abit on the cold side.
A full list of results will follow at a later date.

Someone needs to organise some decent events. Christchurch folk have done numerous great events over the last five years. I cannot think of any other events anywhere in New Zealand except kiteworks buggy events at Muriwai and a windless nationals at the mount. (nothing against the mount, that was bad luck)
Australia has the Cairns Kiteweek (august), the Mambo in Merimbula (November) and the nationals in Geralton WA (January). These will all have well over 100 kitesurfers present. Three really great events on the Australian calender and NONE in NZ?? Lame
Someone with some organisational skills needs to get busy!!

there were three rather large red bull events at mangawhai as i recall - all organised by jafas believe it or not. admittedly none of the organisers were kiters and therefore unencumbered by various problems facing today's would-be-doers.

nevertheless, auckland has actually provided more than it's fair share of entertainment, though it would be great to see more.

I think what I am trying to say is in Christchurch, a bunch of riders just set a date and organised an event. Christchurch has organised about 5x nationals and about 10x local events approximately. They were not organised by huge organisations, they were just for fun.
Why can some other part of the country do some sort of event?
Thanks Adrian

No events on the NZ Calendar yet, but the CWA is meeting next month to sort out our plan for the summer. At this stage I guess we will have at least the same three events from last summer:-

Canterbury Champs
Decay Freeride
Kitesports Challenge

The idea of meeting pre-season is to get the dates for these events set early - this should allow better planning for travel etc for those out of town who wish to be involved.

Also if there are any events planned for other parts of the contry please let Tim or I know - we will do our best to plan around your dates to avoid double booking weekends.

Like picking a spot that actually has wind. The Redbull events where an awesome party, but not great kiteboarding events. I recall one day of hung over wind for the first one, one day of dodgy offshore at the second, and a "refund" cheque from the third (Ropes and I praying for the wind not to pick up after the first round must have worked). Fifteen days of suntan action for one day of kite boarding. Don't get me wrong I loved going there for a hoilday, but after you add up what it cost them to organise (without counting trashed jet skis), was it worth it. They don't seem in a hurry to do it again. Luckily after all this rambaling I've though of a point. The "run for fun", no big prizes, lets all just ride type events we've been having in Chch are great. People turn up kiteboard (if Tim's involved there's always wind), enjoy it and usually win some sort of spot prize. So get yer arses into gear and do it!

Chris

would'nt it be great to see more comps around ?, and it would be easy if we had a bag of money to throw at it,i know everybody is keen to compete or help with other stuff,we need to get some interest from the comercial sectors and i think it [kiteboarding] is very close to reaching the piont where it would be of interest to the corperates for sponsership.
its of interest to me when i get to the beach and notice all the people watching, go to mission bay or takapuna or even murawhai and if its any decent sorta day u have trouble getting through the spectators, this i feel is the way to aproach the sponsership thing, its somthing they understand, power to the people. B safe

we'll keep you informed
nothing to do with a national comp

sounds gooood.
The best format for a competition where everyone gets the most out of it is an 3 or 4 day, best location on the day, expression session - free for all - followed by a 30-40+ minute supersession final at the end of the day/comp, consisting of the top 10. So no one gets knocked out after 10 minutes, everyone has a good time, you end up with an awesome final to watch. Then, at the boozy BBQ prize giving, the winner gets a bottle of bubbly to spray all over his mates, and recognition as 'the best', and then all prizes are in the form of lucky draws.
End result is good participation, good fun, cool t-shirt (gotta get a t-shirt:). And if youre lucky someone has been filming it all, and its playing on a big screen after the prize giving, then the band starts playing, and the beer keeps flowing...

Its called the Taranaki Wave Classic-
www.taranakiwaveclassic.com/

If they can do it, why cant we?

Too late, the nationals were held in a rider judged, freestyle free for all event in our bath tub last week, sponsored by jif and palmolive. Popular moves on the day included the 'full curtain', and the perennial favourite - 'soapintheeyes to blind'.

re KITE EX-SESS
extreme session
a major sponsor has been sitting in the wings for the last two years
a mixture of bad timing and poor press have put a halt to things prior to this.
there are some biggish players involved - looks as if it will be a process of a single comp - TV and media coverage -
the suggestion of a comp over three days causes issues - but these are being looked into...
bottom line is a couple of guys with kitings interests at heart and not pulling on about the nationals and who and who should not do this or that - have put it togther - ironed out the creases and has something in place - if anyone can or wants to do anything else - great
the prize money alone for ex-sess will be the major draw card -
One of the major sponsors had made comment about this site before - and was put off - so unless you have something constructive to say - please keep it to yourself.

Nice going Mike. Hope it all comes together.

Would be good if you guys have some casual comps as well... just to prime you for the big one with the prize money. Maybe help you with a couple of sponsorship deals with the big kite names.... Oh, and get together and get to know each other... Even if it is just to be able to say exactly who the idiot was who launched up wind of the old lady and bowled over her grandson in the process.

Well if there are "a couple of guys with kitings interests at heart" up there, why don't you organise a 'club' that can keep track of the kiters and be a point of contact if issues arise with beach use etc. Would be good to have one of these in each region in NZ and maybe have annual regional comps. And for those who don't want to compete, but who don't want to lose access to their favourite spot, an organised group is a stronger voice than a group of "kite bums".

Suppose I've opened up that can of worms again... but maybe it's time it gets organised.

Hey Su

You have not kicked a can of worms near us we would not touch a national competition nor a local club one- the club scene is for the locals to organize but if this site is anything to go by the locals dont seems to get on very well

As you can possibly track back through other comments on this site about nationals etc there is an on going amount of sabotage with anything that seems to even sniff of being official- as there is not an official body it seems that the likelihood of anyone claiming to be officially creating a competition is unlikely and it is not something we would go near.

But the competition we are putting in place is coming together well and everyone we have spoken too sees the value in it both as a marketing tool and promotional opportunity. It wont be huge but it will have the most prize money any kiteboarding comp has had in NZ and it will be on SKY and TV2. I cant give anymore details other than there are a few folks around who are into building the sport rather bent on than tearing down the individuals in it.

But to answer your question we are not interested in local comp nor working with a national body it will be a balls up grab the cash comp
Bottom line - dont like the concept ? dont come

Hey Mike,

You should get in touch with Derek Tensma from Wind and Kite Mag. I hear he's organised 25 odd kiters to Fiji this August for a sesh. He seems to have what it takes to get things rockin. Thats if your not in touch with him already?

I think you'll find his details in one of the mags.

Good luck Mike, about f__ken time someone's trying to put something together!

eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: The Nationals are coming 7 years, 7 months ago #3332

relax all. if you read back through this informative thread, you will find that 'mike' and his buddies at the magazine that dares not speak it's name are well and truly on to it and a super dooper big event is happening this month. that's right, october is the last month of the four, as originally claimed by mike and fortunately for him there are still 27 days to go before his credibilty comes completely unstuck.

for the keyboard weary here is the original claim penned on the 14 July @ 7.40pm: there will be a none commercial event - no board or kite sponors involved within the next 4 months. I have seen the outline of the event looks awesome....will be kicked in Auckland. possible extension in Tauranga, wellington and chch - will run all over summer.

Jonah - with the new liver - kidney 'n' all I thought you would been more of a new age guy - but no - 'Bum pal' come on 'gay and proud' should be the call. I have heard a much different story that Pat shot over to Oz because of a falling out with Shaan. a lovers tiff. let not rub it in andlet them get on with thier lives

Re: The Nationals are coming 7 years, 7 months ago #3336

thanks for caring guys, but i'm very secure in my heterosexuality. as far as pat goes (and apparently that is quite far indeed) i can't say i have met him more than once.

whilst not particularly romantically attracted to him at the time, i found him to be a perfect gentleman and a fine figure of a man.

the best of british luck to him and his new endeavours and i look forward to hearing about his exploits in 'the lucky country'.

pat, if you are there - now would be a good time to step up and confirm / deny the rumours concerning your alleged disgraceful behaviour and flexifoil fetish etc.
