it's going to be high tide soon so harwood's not an option.

i'm not too keen on those inner harbour spots. you dunedin boys are crazy bastards. had a look at warring, looks pretty good and sheltered. what direction does the swell come thought ie what makes it sheltered. is the lagoon deep enough? aramana (spelling) looks good as well.

kite is fine. foot is almost sweet.

Hey smpl are you still in welly or down south?

when u see it off the page it's usually way too gusty

warrington is good in a ne but you need a good 20 kts plus on the taiaroa meter
it only gets e/ne swell and is usually quite flat

the lagoon is ok but it only works in a ne when you might as well be at the beach, the sw is too gusty

aramoana is a tricky one. it has a rep for being very sharky. the harbour side of the mole (big breakwater) has a huge current, the beach side of the mole often has a big rip too.

the inside of the aramoana spit on the actual harbour is sometimes ok in a s or sw but much nicer at low tide. the current can be fun here too

harwood is far and away the safest/nicest place to go but not always the windiest

i don't live in dunnos. i live in Auckland and kite in auckland but in the next couple of years (not this summer but the next one) i'm probably gonna do some travelling around the country to check out some of these spots and dunnos is on the list. Is it true that dunedin is more suited to advanced kiters and poleys due to the wind and beaches etc or is it safe for beginners to kite there too.

Hey smpl I used to live in the windy city (wellington) and i'm keen on returning there someday and having a few sessions. I used to live in Tawa which is by Porirua.

me thinks the harbour is dodgy, but that's not an educated opinion. we don't have to launch kites in front of building's in wellington.

nah craig, not getting a car, but my mate has one. i will try and get mark m to come out to these safer spots, as we are not workers.

yes the whole harbour apart from harwood and couple of other out of the way spots is dodgy.

harwood would have to be one of the safest learning spots in the country, it's just that it's a 1/2 hour drive from town

but with modern gear, a level head and being very picky about when to go out or not it is possible to survive a season without munting yourself

there are tons of great places to go kitesurfing, it just happens that the most convenient one and the one that gets the most wind over the summer is damn dodgy.

with only half a dozen regular kiters it just takes a while for new places to be discovered

what's the best way to launch at harwood at high tide. is the wind stronger there than warrignton generally?

there's usually just enough sand to set up. set your kite up as close to the waters edge as you can

if there's two of you set up both kites, but wind up one bar carefully , then launch one, walk out flying your kite carefully and launch the other guy.

or do a drift launch

or do a weighted tip launch with a sandbag from shallow water

or eat your lunch/inspect your gear for 1/2 an hr until the tide drops (the beach is flat as, so it won't take long)

wind strengths would be close between there and warrington, possibly a wee bit more at hwood
