Well, its official, I have torn my Lateral Collateral Ligament and damaged my medial collateral ligament
Sigh.
My doctor advised me to look into Donjoy knee braces but I was wondering if anyone has tried a different brace or if I should be looking at other brands?
I need something I can kite with, so under or over my wetsuit in addition to day to day wearing while it heals.
I probably can't kite for a while, but am biting to get back onto the water once the pain subsides.
It would be great if I could have brace that I could use for snow and water kiting, and I know its going to cost me a fortune, but I might as well spend the money on one that will last.
So have any of you guys kited on a knee brace and if so is there one you reccomend?
Thanks

Michelle

purhaps you need to consider 2 braces? one set up for wetsuit size with and extra 10mm diameter and one for not wet suit?

Do you need a an opperation?

To play the devils advocate you may make it worse attempting to kite maybe you need to take a forced break while it heals? i know shocking possibilty!!! But a few weeks now may save months or years of down time if you make the situation worse. i had to do it twice with my wrist opp....!!

perhaps consider kite sports that are less hard on the knee? maybe you should get in a buggy for a few months.

Hey Plummet,
Thanks for the advice.
I don't plan on kiting on it for a while (but I have a buggy in my garage ready and waiting). However, I figured it will still be weak for a long time and don't want to aggravate it, so was thinking about wearing the brace when I kite as more of a preventative measure.

I guess its crosswords and chess for a while

Hmm, to kitesurf or to landboard? That is the question for a kite addicted junkie.

what about your doctor or physio. surely they can get the fruity robo cop style braces?

maybe you could be the launch and land gimp for a few weeks? video footage taker?

either way its an arse... get in that buggy it will definatly be 50 x better than tiddly winks and interent forums.

Did my knee cartilage about 10 months ago crushed and split, got back on the water after a couple of months and have been managing with a mcdavid sports brace, its adequate has a crossover strap system, but every now and again youll get a good wakeup call,i have just ordered a new brace from the us,it has carbon fibre hinges to stop lateral movement expecting it any day so hopefully itll be better than my current one, cost a couple of hundy but it looks like itll give a heap of support ,will let you know what its like when it comes.

Hi Michelle,
That does suck, your not alone with this. Both Dan and myself did the same a few years ago. I use a CTI brace for skiing.

Best advice I can give is go get your knee fixed, any re-damage is soo painful and just not worth the grief. Try the Adidas sports centre in Remuera, if you have a acc number just give them a call and self refer.

Braces - only two worth looking at if you are serious about a brace that will do the job. CTI custom or Donjoy. The CTI custom is the best around and they are suitable for snow, water and land sports, cost about $1100 but ACC will pay for it if you have a recommendation from a OP surgeon.

With the CTI you'll be superwoman.

Cheers
Chris.

Chris - you are a star, thank you
Part of the problem is that I don't know what questions to ask the doctors.
I have an appointment on Wednesday with the orthopedic Dr so I'll know more then, but I'll ask about the CTI as I want to get back on the water A.S.A.P (even just to mow the lawn if I can't jump yet), and snow season is just around the corner.

As it is my goal in life to be superwoman, then it looks like the CTI is on my shopping list
