I'm planning on a bit of a road trip over Christmas and am looking for good info on kite spots in the following areas; East Cape, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty. The goal is to find the best waves/wind possible and explore the country a bit. The sort of information I am after is where and when to go to certain spots, also locals to hook up with who know the areas.

I appreciate that some may not want to post this information publicly (especially East Cape)so send me a PM or message me through the yakers.co.nz site

not wanting to discourage you east coast mission. but if your looking for waves shouldn't you hit up the west coast. ?

ps let uas know what you find!!!.

pss If you want waves then down the coast of the naki will give you insane waves that only the hardest core riders will hit.

hey ive done that part of the island and its amazing but theres sooooooo many spots its best to graze on google earth and ref with local wind/tide/swell 4casts, its easy. only if u kite the cape b careful cause its mean as, also if ur gona free camp anywhere around there extra care is required concerning camp/car/gear/ security

have fun bsafe

Yes Plummet the plan will include the might naky as well (weather permitting). However the El Ninia weather patterns that is strong this season apparently means more North Easterly weather patterns, so hence looking at the east cape/east coast. Perfect time to go check it out is my guess.

Yes I have heard that the locals in the east cape are pretty protective of their patch. Have done the Google earth fly through and already identified a few spots worth looking at off the beaten track.

There are no local kiters on the East Cape that I am aware of.
The best spot depends upon wind direction and finding a open sandy beach launch.
I've had good kites at Himitangi, Opepe, Te Kaha, Waihau Bay, Te Araraoa, and Tolaga Bay.
The tip of East Cape has pretty impressive wind stats!

Thanks guys for your feedback. I just posted up an email that Bob McDavitt send me regarding wind for the summer. I think its a pretty good explanation and have posted it up on my blog.

This weekend looks to be a classic case of what he is talking about

give me a heads up when/if you head to the naki.

i'd also be keen to do the himatangi-waikania downwinder if your slotting that in at some point.

Reading your blog on flow is very interesting. I call it zen. I achieved a state of flow/zen for about 6 hours during the night of my 24hr. My flow had been interupted by incorrect set up. i made chances to my set up and everything slotted into line and i was at a state of oneness..... very cool.

Are you making down as far as Hawkes Bay? Some nice wind and waves here at the moment - even if you get down to Mahia - a beautiful part of the country - Mahanga anything with east in it - nice waves and beautiful sandy beach or if it's S -W you could go on the inside at Mahia/Oputama- had some epic kites there and on the right tide, clean, large sets. Never had anything go missing - the Cape is awesome!
