TOPIC: big wave

I mentioned a while ago, to a few people a big wave (20-25ft) that was not closing out despite it being cross onshore - (Spencer wants to ride it) - it is half way down 90 mile beach where the rocks stick out - I found this photo I took of it on the inside after it peeled round the rock - to get an idea of size check out the 2 guys fishing on the left of the photo.

The spot you refer to is called Bluff, good flat water riding at low tide as a sand bank forms a bit like Shakespeare. Surfed it a lot over the years and the left can be good, always a lot bigger than Ahipara. As for holding a 25ft wave, no way in hell. With the contour and depth of 90mile beach the wave would have to break at least a mile out to sea. Your picture looks to be about 8 to 12ft. When you build your boards do you use a standard measurement or do you make your own up?( eg 5mtr=1ft)
As to dumb ass he would have to kite more than 50ft out to sea to ride waves like this which I have not seen yet, but I would be happy to pick him up from Invercargill airport and ferry him to centre island (quasi sub Antarctic) where he can ride real 25ft side shore peling wave and I'm sure he will only need a one-way ticket.

I agree, no way the Bluff will ever hold 20 foot plus. Ive surfed it heaps over the years, I was there 2 days ago as the swell droped at Shippies. The left hand break on the northern side is surfable up to about 12 foot and could be kiteable . There is a large flat water area between the shore and the and the sand bar that forms the left, this would be the only spot you could kite. You would need a jet ski to get your sorry ass back though. You think the currents strong at Raglan wait till you go out here, lose your board and its on its way to Columbia Banks (now that would be a good tow in spot).
If Shippies is 2 to 3 foot(normal) the bluff will be 6 foot plus.

Give me a hard time or what!

I am a humble english surfer who suffered most of his life surfing 2 ft wind chop freezing his nuts off in the UK - loved it though.

I should have said 3 to maybe 4 times overhead rather than 20 -25 foot - I guess I would have got even more stick if I had posted in Hawaii.

Anyhow it was impressive stuff and I was surprised to see a wave peeling and not closing out on such a big day.

I kited at Waitara (naki way) at the weekend which has a beautiful peeling left hander - it was way too gusty to enjoy and we got hammered( SSW) but in more of a SW I reckon this would be sweet as long as you get out before the windsurfers.

Anyone that wants to buy a 5ft (hawaiian) kiteboard let me know - may cost a bit though.

Your right, it is impressive.

I would kite there if we had full backup, ie thundercat or jetski to get us out of the shit.
Having said that I surf at the Bluff with no backup other than the rest of the crew.
I guess things go get alot more out of hand with kiteing!

Kane, Steve and I had an awesome day there 18 months ago after the final Red Bull. Trumpet dragged all the visiting yanks away to Raglan so we had the place to ourselves. Gusty on the inside but fine out the back when we were there, not sure of the actual direction, I guess SW, was pretty offshore though. The poleboarders seemed pretty friendly, noboady cared too much if we "shared" a wave. They did have an un-nerving habbit of trying to avoid us by going down wind towards the lines. Still we all survived. Hopefully back there at the end of the month, if someone can arrange wind and swell that'd be great, thanks.
