Hey has anybody kited at this spot before? I checked it out the other day... Infact I checked out a few spots on the northen side of the Manukau Harbour.

For those not in the know, Kaitarakihi Beach is just before you get to Huia... and Huia is just before the nice long bumpy ride to Watipu... and all of these spots are right by the Manukau Heads.

Kaitarakihi has a very good launch area and solo landing there wouldn't be too hard there either... not that you'd kite here solo. When i checked it out there was a light NW blowing which of course didn't get in here so the place was very very tranquil and the water was glass. It was a bit too foggy too see how open this place is but by looking at a map it looks like it get the SW right between the eyes from the Tasman Sea. I'm interested to see if anyones kited at Huia as well....

Hey Johnny is that U?? What kites do you use?? Is it Wipika... did you used to use C quads ages ago??

Anyhow... yeah i checked that spot out a couple of weeks ago after seeing the description of it in the locations section. Anyway the winds were from the NNW on that day so obviously wasn't getting in there.. and it was foggy too so couldn't see much.. and of course i wasn't gonna test the water either.

Hey what's it like windwise there? When did you go... is it more of a winter spot or a summer spot?

Anyway I'm holdin out for an Easterly tomorrow... Eastern Beach, I may even sample Orewa... anyone go out there today (Friday)?

See you guys at the beach....

Hey what was it out at Orewa? It was 10-15 knots out at Eastern yesterday and hopefully it's gonna rock today....

I've still got my C Quads, it's the only thing that flys at the moment  It's like summer out here at Eastern at the moment...

Hey johnny I checked out Kaitarakihi the other day. Nice and sunny with a 10-15 knot Thermal getting in there.... hell you wouldn't wanna break your rig there! I checked out Huia too and that place looked mint, nice Thermal was getting up and I allmost felt tempted to zip home and fetch my toys, this was at about noontime, looks nice at high tide, flattish water, doesn't look like a bad spot but we'll know for sure what it's like during summer.

Just make sure you stay upwind first run out... once you get into the shadow of the cliff its all downhill and a long walk back!
Make sure you are a good swimmer! it cuts up pretty rough and a few (boaties) drowned there recently!

Re: KAITARAKIHI BEACH 8 years, 6 months ago #1013

Only windsurfed there on west 4.5m sail when it cranks.Always windier than harbour.Low tide 200 - 300 m out is a sandbar that throws up a peaky face to launch off.
I definitly want to kike there 15 -20 knots westerely,LOW TIDE WITH INCOMING TIDE ONLY.SHOULD BE AWESOME!!! 8)
High tide can get too gusty especially if any NW.

How shallow is it out in the channel man... can you stand up at low tide? I've checked the beach out a few times and it's definately gusty on the beach. However out in the channel it allways looks pretty windy... you definately wouldn't wanna run into any problems while out there.

The channel is deep... no chance of standing in it at low... but the sandbar runs parallel to your point of sail... so once upwind a little you are sailing along it...... always better steady wind out here compared to the waitamata in a s/w

How far do you head out? I'm assuming that you don't wanna get into any difficulty... am I right?
