I went to wellington in November. Wind every day with rain, clouds, gust ... I hate this area ! the beach is not even nice...

Wellington is a beautiful city though...

Can't say much about Wellington, but I kitesurf Kapati & further north a lot. Waikanae at the river mouth is worth a try in anything from S thro W to N, usually find some other guys to kite with aswell. Elsewhere Otaki river mouth can be intresting at high tide. My usual haunts at Foxton & Tangimoana have taken a real battering after the floods, both sand bars have been washed away so no real flat water unless you can get right up the river. Sea conditions along Kapiti are mostly messy, even in a big swell so can be a bit frustrating especially as the prevailing winds are on shore westerlies. Try the wellington kitesurfers web site for places around Wellington, you will find plenty of info there. Hope this helps.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

You can also ride on Lake Ferry with (cold) southerlies.
It's quite a long drive from wellington since it's on the other side of the mountains, but you can have some good glassy water and ride full speed for as much as your legs can behind the sandbar. Awesome video spot too due to the offshore wind stuff.
