I'll be in auckland on business 10-12 feb and looking to do a evening session if weather allows. i'll be staying in mt wellington so i don't fancy travelling across the bridge in rush hour traffic.
any places south of the bridge i can go for an evening session that wont take 2 hours to get to?

Hey Plummet,

Plenty of spots south of the bridge, check out my spot guide for more but the closest ones for you in Mt Welly will be:
Bramley Beach (W-N)
Glendowie sandspit (S-SW)
Eastern Beach (SE-NE)
St Heliers/Kohimarama (NW-NE)

These should cover most wind directions but they are all pretty tide dependent, all that infos on the site though. Give me a yell if you need any more info on them

Cheers

ok good info.

i think on the wednesday high tide is 5.30 on the east coast and 8.30 on the west. so not ideal for easterly action.

Yeah 4:44pm high tide, Glendowie and Bramley both are best at high tide so those would be sweet, St Heliers is Mid/low so no good same with Eastern Beach. It's only a 2.7m so Eastern should be sweet for a 7pm quickie if its easterly, otherwise Bramley and Glendowie should cover everything else just about.

what about west coast for clean westerlies? i'm not too interested in dirty over buildings gusty poo.

Or do i need to make the trek to muriwai if that happens?

ps keen for some flat water. i've been landboarding pretty hardout for 3 years but just started kitesurfing in the last month.

The naki provides almost no flat water. the best days are probably 1 meter swell with chop. i've done some days with 25 knots and 2m swell + chop and thats pretty hard out for learning. hunkering for flat to get my upwind dialed and jumping technique.

pss i find it amusing you don't have muriwai on your list, or 90 mile or baileys beach or raglan or kapiti coast or bop. But otherwise good info.

Pt Chev is your best bet for "central" westerly, Muriwai if you dont mind the hike out there. The spots I mentioned are all pretty flat, especially Glendowie which is like glass on the Northern side of the spit on a SW.

Manukau Harbour would be a closer option than Muriwai but your'e going to have to deal with the motorway out there, usually stronger than the central spots though.

Spent a few years down in the Naki, did my knee in at fitzroy, that swell can be good fun but lethal!

Haha the spot guide only has places I've actually spent a bit of time at, wanted to put detailed facts from my own experiences up there rather than just a generic bit about every spot thats why it's lacking a few majors. Have had a couple of sessions on Kapati coast and been out to murawai once but not enough to feel I can share any info thats of importance to people. Few trips planned in the near future though which will hopefully sort that though!

yet fitzroy is proabably the smallest break in the naki but that doesn't stop it from being massive. I went out the other day in a direct cross shore wheich ment the wind was coming off the town and lumpy as hell. i was then found a 8-10 foot monster set bearing down on me..... oh dear. so chose to go blast into it and i hit the lip just as the monster was peaking.......needless to say i went up. i did a splash down landing but none the less it was fun. can't wait until i'm good enough to roost those big airs and land them properly.

ps i thought yourd all belt to muriwai when its a westerly? its pretty damn sweet out there. of course no flat water unless you drive/board all the up the beach to the moose land.

ok i'm in auckland monday/tuesday. and can probably sneek out teusday arvo 4 ish for a session before i head back to the naki.

Low tide on the east coast on teusday is

2010/03/30 01:58 -1.42
2010/03/30 08:12 1.50

wind is looking to be easterly on teusday and maybe enough for a session.

where should i head? i'll be leaving from east tamaki and don't want get tied up in too much traffic.

Monday and Tuesday are looking good with nice Easterlies
I don't trust the forecasts this far out, but I usually update my Twitter account with the local wind, where I'm kiting that day and how it looks when I get there if you want a heads up (twitter.com/medickinson). I will try and get out around 4pm on both Monday and Tuesday.

your right i don't trust the forecast this far out either.

eastern beach looks to be the closest to where i'll be so thats where i'll head. if theres not enough wind i'll just start the long haul back to the naki.

This site gives us a pretty good outlook on what the winds doing in AK

windsurf.co.nz/windsurf_weather_alk.asp

Would love to shoot up to Orewa for the cleaner air but am hoping Kohi Beach will turn it on

That wasn't actually too bad. We got that sweet bit at mid tide when it was 20 knots. Enuf for my 7m to have me going upwind hehe. At the end was lit on the 11m but getting bloody choppy with the high tide until wind eased.

yeah pretty good session by the end of the day. i got some decent jumps dialled by the end. pretty cool to be blast in waist high water. crash your brains out and then just stand up and walk back to the board.....

i do have to say tho ultimatly i prefer the swell and waves. and straingly when you have 2 meter swell in can ha less chop than not much swel....

Yeh, it ended up being an OK session. I thought the rain was going to ruin the afternoon and take all the wind, but a little bit of patience and it was quite a lot of fun.
Nice to meet you Plummet, and glad to see you getting off the land for a bit and into the water

EB is good. Perfect terrain at mid tide and akls traffic keeps it from being crowded so pretty sweet. The wind can be a biarch sometimes but then again Orewa doesn't allways turn it on for me when i head up there either haha. Hoping for more kickass easterlies or even better a NORTHERLY hehe
