Hi guys,

With Toy Boy's recent theft of gear from his car and maybe a few others too, where do you put your car keys when you kitesurf?

Obviously I don't want them to get wet, and as a lone kiter, I don't have anybody on the shore to give them to, so I usually hide them behind a tire, or in the petrol cap area.

Both of these would be pretty easy for a thief to find, and steal not only my gear but my car too! Does anybody have any tips for where they put their keys?

Thanks,
Michelle

yea it sucks you cant go for a ride without worrying about your car and all your gear.
I have a little pocket thing on the leg of my wettie that is designed for putting your car key in, its fantastic.
i think ultimately if some one wants to break into your car, there going to and there isnt much you can do. SUCKS HUH.
I like sams idea, win big wednesday and hire security to protect our cars, and kick the crap out of the thieves

well i found an awesome place for mine one session last year...

my ONLY key to my car i managed to lock in the boot... (hatchback BMW) and seriously it took the AA guy myself and a mate over an hour to work out how to get it out.... simply couldnt manage to get into that fricken little car...

Problem nowadays is that all the newer cars come with remote keys... so getting them wet isnt an option... but i think ill start putting my key in a small sealed bag into the key pocket on my wetsuit...

Ive seen some things on trademe which are small lockboxes that you attach to your car and lock the key inside... like a combo lock thing..

When i go surfing i set the alarm with the zapper then hide it in the car then lock the car with the key and put that in leg rope/wettie though i set the alarm off when i get back in. Another option is you can buy a magnetic box when is made for keys and you can hide it under your car or even in the engine bay though you might have to crawl under thew car to get it and this isn't that decrete. Don't ask me were you get them because i have no idea but if someone does know or find out let me know.

Hey Zenon have you got a spare now? As its often easier to phone your dad to drop off the spare than the AA guy to break in.

I use a Surflock...found it on the aussie website

www.surflock.com.au/

there's a link to a local distributor in Albany who supplied me with the goods in 24hours by courier, works just fine...

sits in plain sight so anyone screwing with it is obvious..

Check it out, works for me and I've seen others using it....

Dont spend to much on the lock boxes people! If you have a $2 shop handy they have them there and if your car looks like a garden rock they have those ones too!!

Oh guys (and gals) just stick to the old shitbox that no one thinks has anything valuable inside it, then don't bother to lock it at all.

Oh, and I would appreciate it if you could all put your Rego's on here with your posts, will make life much easier ........

Thanks guys, I like the key holder idea - will probably stick a magnet onto the back and keep it out of sight.
Its so sad when we have to think about these things, but I guess we are easy targets with so much gear in our cars and it being obvious that there is no way we are coming back anytime soon.
Lets hope this does not become a regular occurrence.

Unless you don't like your car, don't even think of using strap on racks. They rub the paint dull, especially metallic paints.
