yep i have been there , there are a couple of gates the ranger chap looks after, we got a key and went with a local. I would call the ranger\caretaker first. it is a 2wd acess route metal in most places , one steap ish hill i recall having trouble with in the 3ton v8 diesel Chev ute, it was so heavy it got close to taking off ( towing a jet ski). low tide is a non event , high tide is good.

Thanks for the quick reply jimmy. Wow sounds like a mish! last time I was there was the last moose meet and drove on the beach all the way up...
Im really keen to hit it up with all these westerlies we've been getting here So anyone who wants to join is welcome

Would you say its possible for a small-medium 2WD car to hit that road?

Also, do you still have the ranger's number dude?

Many Thnks

2wd could get to the lagoon but not cross it anywhere i know of, better to hit south murs and go the 45km up the beach. i hit the 4wd access at the south end last weekend it was pretty good with all the rain we have had. It takes about the same time too. The north tip has pretty soft sand so i dont think you would make it all the way around but im sure some crazy dudes have before . i dont have the rangers number, a bit of google required me thinks . i got to a moose a few years back via that south head road and then on over the lagoon with a 650 4wd quad and a trailer for the bits, some of the creeks exposed in the lagoon at low tide are deeper than a 2wd would handle.

Hey - head up the main road towards south head, then keep your eyes open for a road called trigg road. Take that road and you will enter the park and see signs for the air base etc.

After a while on the road you will finally come to the lagoon. I got up there in a Golf GTI so you should be fine in most things. It was a gravel / steel road type thing and the gravelly rock thingies were a little larger than i hoped but car was fine. It just seemed to take ages to get there!

Have fun"

Linky on google maps... you can see the steel roads marked in dotted lines to the lagoon.

Cool guys, Thanks alot for all your help! much appreciated =)

Re:SOUTH HEAD ROAD / MURIWAI's LAGOON 3 years ago #20547

Road access is controlled by Hancock Forest Management.....
the road can be closed for 'operational' reasons (usually logging right beside it, but now almost finished so not likely)
or 'safety' reasons (high fire risk in summer or 'operational reasons'...got the idea?)

so call 0800 recre8 for a phone update before you make the long haul.
And

check the Defence Force flags high tech warning system just north of Parakai

It can advise the road is closed for some reason often in conflict with the Hancock's phone message.

Great sailing when the SAS is practising its assault stuff; bombs going off and all!!

yeah i was the lone range out this sunday just gone from 9am till 1pm on one but me was so nice to be in such a sucluded area by myself i was able to pratice my latest trick with out anyone to laugh and the wipe out or worrie about crashing in to any one was perfect.

you take the 16 from point chev all the way to royal rd roundabout then go left past westgate shops to the round about then right towards kemu keep heading along that road passed muriwai keep going till you reach a round about to helensville and south head go left toward south head keep going for miles now round the bends till you get to the fork in the road where one side is dirt track the other is tily st i think there will be a barn in front with i think it was roundabout writen on the front anyways take a left there down the hill then on the right is the military base go in to it throught the gate follow the road down the hill to the left then towards the lagoon right park up at the beach i walked across and back as it was low tide but you can kite if there is enough wind otherwise i found if you head to the river mouth you can walk across its cold and gets neck deep but can be done i no im crazy for walking but its worth it and plus it burns more calories so you stay slim and can get away on a smaller kite lol if you need more help 02102654803 is my number sam
