Has anyone ever been to the Chatham islands?
I'm working on the Stance Trip 2009 to NZ and I'm considering taking the crew over there.
Does anyone know the conditions? It looks perfect in term of wind but what about the waves? We need BIG ones or clean ones. Well, big and clean would be ideal!

Any info would be great!

The Lagoon is great, but no waves, wind is awesome, I have a lot of friends that live there as I used to work for the local Airline.
Not too sure about wave riding there, lots of big sharks to, I will try to find out for you

I was out there last year for a few days, took my gear with me. first day was sunny and calm, there was however a nice clean 5-6ft swell rolling into the beach north of Waitangi. Second day was cold and gloomy 35kts, so had I had a smaller kite, and as travelling alone, I would have opted for the relative safety of one of the lagoons.

I did have a good drive round though. There are some great beaches and lagoons - awesome kiting potential. Some exploration could turn up some superb wave-kitesurfing spots, although getting around isn't easy due to lack of roads and land access issues, kinda got the feeling that the locals aren't too keen on people just rocking up, gotta ask permission first :roll:

Get in touch with one of the island's hosts and see if they can point you in the right direction.

Not exactly the cheapest place to visit though...

there was windsurf mission done there by some hardcore windsurfers. One was Scott Fenton and I think the other was Mike Stewart. Both NZ windsurf legends.

it was in the NZ Windsurf mag back in the 90's but I'm not sure of the name of the mag anymore.

they found plenty of waves.

At that stage we're not sure if we're going to go or not.
I'm studying the possibilities. I need to get in touch with some
windsurfers.
I don't want to get a whole bunch of pro riders and then realize the
conditions are no good.
So I'm still going to ask people around here and then need to submit
the idea to the rest of the crew and then we'll make a decision, long
process
But definitely, I'll let you know if I need help!
