Hi!

Some friends are planning on going to Samoa end of July to kite there. They're not sure on which island they should stay, between Savai and Opulu.
Has anyone kited there?
Any clue which one is best to kite?

They're desperate to get some kind of information so it would be great if you could let them know if anyone has allready been there.

I was in Samoa a month ago, stayed on Opulu last two weeks of June, but unfortunately light winds prevailed (~10-15knots), and they blew in the same direction as the current in the lagoons, which were kind of choppy. Check out http://www.meteorology.gov.ws/FORECAST.HTM for the weather - it looks like it's picked up since I was there.

I stayed at Virgin Cove on the south coast, and got a couple of sessions early on. There's a big area inside the reef which is clear of coral, with a narrow beach for launching. Similar setup further east at Tafetafe Beach, and Coconuts is somewhere in between, but you really need a rental car if you're moving around. The north coast is kinda rocky, with lots of sea walls, but I did get out again, at Aggie Greys Lagoon Resort, cos the wind came up and I could launch from outside our room. But, this was dodgy as it was sideshore, with large trees upwind & a shipping lane downwind.

Still, the water and wind were warm, so I'm not complaining. Good luck.

Spent 15 days at Vacations at the end of August last year.Had 15 days of cross shore 20 - 30 knots, sunshine, aqua clear warm water, mellow cool people and cold beer.Why would you go anywhere else.

Just got back from a week on Upolu. Trade winds all week, often a bit light and gusty on the inside but pretty steady on the outer reefs. I mostly kited Coconuts, other places get a bit better wind but launches are a bit more dodgy. I took a 12m, twin-tip, and a battered old surfboard that I didn't care about damaging; the reefs are pretty shallow around low tide. Could have done with a 9m on a couple of days. The reef breaks are superb, some are world-class, but potential for coral rash is pretty high if you get it wrong :?

I heard there were some Raglan kiters on Savai'i at the same time,
probably had good conditions as well.
