Hi,

I've been kitesurfing about 4 months now and I'm a cheap bastard so I've only got a few old C kites and a 9m gorilla 2 twin skin. My question is whats the story with wellington, is it possible to ride C kites there or is it "far too dangerous" even for an experienced rider? What about peter lynn twin skins? Are they safe enough for Wellington?

safe as mate.

Take it easy and only go out in 15knot conditions for a start. As you get more confident you'll have a much better idea of how much wind you can handle...

If anything, a twinskin is much safer than a C kite because of the way the kite "flags out" when the release is pulled.

Twinskins also handle gusts so much better than anything else on the market...I've had my 13m scorpion up in 30 knots, when everyone else was on 8m bows.

Cheers, Will

used to fly C's in welly all the time, they are fine especially on Waikanae, bows are better here due to the gust variation, I'd probably give plimmy a miss with the C... just too variable

You can find kites that actually depower pretty cheap these days... Much better for learning, especially in wellington. Wouldnt bother with the C's if you can avoid it.

Go and see the guys at Wild Winds they might have something that would suit.

I started out on a 2005 C kite (C02) in wellington, a nice kite in consistent winds. Unfortunately i hardly got out much in my first year or so and Waikanae was really the only place i was happy flying it. Most other spots around wellington can be fairly gusty generally.

Sold the C kite, got a smaller bow and have been able to get out a lot more often since then.

99% of people here in Wellington ride a bow or hybrid of some sort. Conditions are just too freakish to get decent sessions all the time out of a C alone. I had a C years ago, but as soon as I got a bow I had way better sessions here. Personally I ride a hybrid now & that gives you the best of both worlds.

(I do have a Cab switchblade2 12m for sale if you are interested in getting a cheap bow.)
