Check out Jamie Barrow's article for Wind&Kite Sept 2007, plus his comments (& others) in this forum @ http://www.kiteforum.co.nz/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3214.

I read all this in anticipation of a trip in late June, and opted for accommodation on the south coast of Upolu (exposed to the SE trade winds) near a village called Sa'anapu - partly cos it mentioned "There is seldom a strong wind in Sa'anapu. Yet it is considered to be the best spot for windsurfing." Also, looking at the vicinity in Google Earth I could see a large area of what looks like sand covered reef. Fingers crossed.

It's hard to find the perfect kiting destination. Good luck.

I have been there numerous times and the kiting has been a mixed bag. The best island by far is Savaii and the place to stay is Vacations, its about $80 a night which includes dinner and breakfast. The trade wind seems to wrap around the north eastern side of Savaii delivering a wicked side shore lagoon ride. It really is worth the ferry ride, with a peeling wave at the pass. Both Shaane and I have kited all over both islands and can very much recommend it. Vacations is at the north eastern tip and the kiting spot is directly out front. Good luck

Hi Wattij
How did coconuts compare to Suvaii, we will do both.

What does Vacations have for the females and do they have mattresses in the Fares etc.

Need to go somewhere wife proof.

I have stayed at the Mininoa surf camp before and that is very basic.

Thanks for the info.

Coconuts is nice, its probably the best kiting on Upolu. The beach on the eastern side on the resort is has plenty of room to set up and riding the lagoon can be all good. Be wary of the locals, they can be a little protective of their turf. They told me it was a marine reserve, with the amount of fish and turtles I could see while kiting I believed them but the manager at coconuts told me to ignore the local lads

Vacations is definitely wife friendly, the accommodation is reasonably basic but comfortable. From memory there are double innersprung mattresses on the floor.

You will have a blast
