A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of returning to Melbourne and kited both St Kilda (goodish spot, no more crowded than Orewa, dirty water) and Altona (wicked spot at highish tide, huge beach). On return to NZ, customs advised they had new rules to protect NZ from the abalone (paua) virus that is present in both Victoria and South Australia. If your stuff has been in their water - either lake or sea - and is damp on return, they are supposed to soak it in a bleach bath for 10 minutes before you can have it back.

Needless to say there was no way my kites were going into their bath, but my harness, board and wettie did. There was some debate amongst the customs staff as to what needed attention and the level of dampness before a bath was mandatory. Their chief dude seemed pissed that Wellington had made up this rule and given them just one largish plastic bin to soak all things suspect, including surfboards, kayaks etc. As a surfer, he said he would not want his wettie getting bleached.

Advice - do your kite trips elsewhere, and dry everything out before returning if you do kite in those two states.
