Does anyone know if a north to south island (or south to north) kitecrossing has been done, or if it would be possible?

It hasn't been done on a kite yet, I have done some investigation into it and you need to fork out for a fairly grunty support boat to keep up, would be just plain dumb to go unsupported. A nice Northwest wind would come in handy (south is too variable) and a bow kite to cope with the wind range variation as you come across.

The straight has been done by a windsurfer and the guy who did it is an absolute legend, ran out of wind half way and pumped his way across in 8 hours, got back in 3 when the wind picked up
