Hi,

I was wondering where would be the best place to kite between Fiji, Rarotonga, etc, for the month of July?
Has anybody been around that time?
My sister is learning how to kitesurf and is looking for a resort over there where she can also take her 3 kids. Safe, suitable for kids, and wind...I know that's a lot of elements but if there is something possible, please let me know.

Cheers

Rarotonga is a very hard place to kite if you a learner. you only have a couple of meters of beach before the trees and i was there in dec and two people ended up with there kites in the trees. steady winds and great place for kids

Mate, fiji would be a no go for learning also. I have kited Nananui-i-ra which has a school, the place is full of coral, the amount of blood shed by the beginners was unreal... not sure if other places are better in Fiji

Tahiti has BIG lagoons, but small beaches and lots of coral heads close to the surface, but they do kite there. Beware the coral and current at the reef passes. Raro has a good lagoon (also has coral and urchins!), but as another poster said small beaches on the only real place to kite on the sth eastern corner. Fiji pretty much the same. Go surfing instead

Hi Charlotte,

Try Plantation Island, fantastic place for kids, very kid/family orientated resort.

www.plantationisland.com/default.asp

The back beach is fine for learning as the coral is about 100m off the beach. There is the odd rock and coral head, which you can see easily at low tide. At low tide there's little if no water so only good at mid - high. High tide as most tropical islands there is little beach to land and launch. Just set the kite up on the beach have someone walk the kite out in the water while you are on the beach , this will avoid all coconut tree tangle. Best way to launch and land if your unsure or not a expert at landing your kite in small places. There is a sand bar that appears after high tide about 500m off the resort front, which is a fantastic flat water spot for the more experienced.
They have a lot of kitesurfers and windsurfers staying here through out our winter, boat transport and saftey is available for a price and Big James has permission to take kitesurfers to Namaoto Island, private $1000 a night surf resort.

You are able to launch from their beach, but you are not allowed on the wave as they own it?? It's about a 5 km down winder with boat support. Well worth doing just to see this world-class wave pounding the reef.

It's not Maui, so no guarantee of wind.

I have spent 4 weeks there over the last three years and have had wind 75% of the days on the 12M and 16M.
Hope this helps, cheers Shane A
