- Winter in Northern California and big waves are running

- Two surfers are flushed a mile out to sea in a 5 kt. rip current

- No one knows they are out there, sunset is approaching

- Exhausted from fighting the current they drift further offshore, deeper into cold and despair

- Hope slowly grows from the sea in an unexpected and unusual form ...

The guy who holds the camera, I guess

Some people should better hurry up rescuing these poor guys instead of wasting time taking pictures...

That would be me and I was several thousand miles away and unaware of the problem until some time after Ray performed the rescue. I was stumped for an opening photo to use for the account. Finally found one from southern California that could work. There was only one surfer shown and he was ok but pretty far offshore. Magic of Photoshop, now there are two. Does anyone at your end know that Kiwi white pointer shown in the account? Looks unhappy.

Port Chalmers is my local waters, well, Dunedin is and Port Chalmers is the local port....

Don't recognise that shark....

I hate shark pictures and sharks on tv, not good for the old mental imagery when body dragging for the board way out the back somewhere....

Craig
harbour boosting, sideways buggying, harwood speed gps'ing, sometime kiteskiing, wave/washing machine kiting, gear breaking, driving about chasing the wind....

There is a little hype out there about sharks isn't there? I try to hold back, succeed some of the time. I have an OT article to go up about a local kiter that keeps getting into it with cuddas and sharks while spearfishing snapper and grouper. Some fights are better avoiding given the speed advantage of the home team.

Many guys doing standup in NZ?

This is an old post to be sure. I just noticed I said something about an OT article about a kiter that keeps getting into it with sharks (more than any other kitesurfer I know of, worldwide) and a cuda.

You can even see the same guy having a blast doing standup in some nice and quite rare swells off our area in SE Florida:

Hope winter is going well over your way.
