Gidday Shaan,
What's happening with our Nationals in February? I've had some inquiries, and just want to make sure you guys are onto it. Plus, I've already booked my holidays round the dates you gave us earlier.
Happy New Year dude

Re: 2004 Nationals 8 years, 4 months ago #1424

dude. change your hols - it's going to be later in the year. just relax - us jafa's are on to it. (ha ha ha!)

dude. i crashed my mtb on a tarseal downhill the other day - most of me landed on the grass and sustained only moderate injuries but the unprotected palm of my left hand took a hell of a hit on the taranaki hard core bitumen, filling the wounds up with hot tar.

i can't wait to hear everyone's advice regarding hill running.

not such a happy new year for me so far - hope yours is much better!

I don't know what you have in mind by 'later in the year' but maybe worth considering a lot of people fly the coop during the winter - people who would otherwise be keen to compete. I'm sure you won't have trouble getting enough punters for a event - sounds like there are a lot of riders in auckland, but, the bigger the better!

Re: 2004 Nationals 8 years, 4 months ago #1426

it won't be in the winter - more like the spring.

WTF???

The NZ Titles will now be next season??

I for one would like to see a Nationals THIS season, and maybe not in AKL.

Relax DK, The Nationals should be in/near Auckland because that's where maybe 90% of NZ kiters live. And if it happens that such an event is held there in spring, when Southern riders are just dusting off their kiteboards after the four months of darkness, then so be it. I don't think there'd be more than five or so from the whole South Island who would make the expensive journey North to ride in just several 8 minute heats anyhow.

hey DK didn't you guyz have it last year? the year before it was at the mount.. in feb.. in light conditions....

I think Auckland would be a great place to have it.... no... I KNOW auckland would be a great place to have it.... city of sails.. city of wind..... i'm just glad that it's gonna be held in the best season....

spring has heaps of wind, totally kicks ass, all of us jaffas know that.

Re: 2004 Nationals 8 years, 4 months ago #1440

the event being refered to is called 'The New Zealand Kiteboard Titles" it is not the 'Nationals' as Shaan has pointed out in the past. As Shaans event he can run it when ever and however the hell he likes. If you don't like it then don't show-up, and whatever you do don't hold your breath

Well three days into my question and all we've got out of Shaan is drivel after dribble, he should have been a politician, except he couldn't organise a F@#k in a Brothel (probably not true)
Cool! Who wants to organise the '2004 NZ kiteboarding Nationals'
Anywhere but Ch-Ch, maybe Taranaki, it's usually windy there, I'm keen for a Roadie in the first week of February, plus it's still in the North Island so numbers should be good, everyones riding will be fully tuned in, we just need a committed sponsor with a good 'beer' connection, it's been done before. Any ideas?
Yo! 8)

Re: 2004 Nationals 8 years, 4 months ago #1459

i'm into a roadie to taranaki in early february! i might even be able to get back on the water before then! (this time i will endeavour to leave far less skin on the actual road).

as far as the event goes - relax and let us get on with getting it together for the spring.

if you just can't bear the wait, by all means organise something yourself or just have a super dooper winner takes all arm wrestle session with decay.

maybe start an association while you're at it. they're kinda useful.....in a....ummm......well ghdkf#4iuvu c[84yhsih[o

excuse me i nodded off for a moment and went face down into the keyboard.

I was talking to someone the other night who is an event manager, and they were very surprised that we did not have a national association here in New Zealand. I started to point out that the main thing an association would be good for is defending people's right to kiteboard when challenged by councils etc.

And then I realised something.....we don't seem to have this problem in christchurch, (strangely there is not a lot of competition for space around the sewerage outfall in the estuary, and the howling freezing easterly keeps the punters off the beach). In fact, all the bitching about kiteboarders being responsible and behaving themselves around other 'users' blah blah blah seems to happen in auckland (with the majority of the kiteboarders living there). And I don't live in auckland anymore. After consideration of all the discussions and points made on and off this forum I have decided my opinion on a national association should reflect my own personal agenda: Fuck bureacracy, I never liked it in the first place. Secondly, a national association would do nothing for me because I don't live in auckland.

i like to knowbout all these incidents that have happened in auckland....

the last one that i know of happened out here at eastern beach acouple of years ago when someone decided that a 16m AERO looks good smokin up the powerlines  oh 4 the good old dayz!!!

yeah i must admit... you guys have it pretty sweet in chch with your best spot not having any swimmers there due to the maneating moonfishees.

Re: 2004 Nationals 8 years, 4 months ago #1471

yeah right on - i agree with a lot of what kinawera says. she gets smarter by the day.

from my twisted position, i reckon an equally ridiculous - but considerably more fun alternative to an association - would be starting a 'society' of kiters. when i was a grom, i went caving a couple of miles under a part of north england with members of the london speleological society - an offshoot of oxford? university's dangerous sports club. speleologists, or cavers, are similar to kiters in many ways; geekiness, social deviances, drinking habits and gearheadedness to name a few - though clearly they are paler than kiters - therefore possibly a lot safer. another difference is they always work together as a loose team of individuals - you can't really go solo caving. there are no contests in caving. if you make it out the other side of the cave, or back to the top: you are a winner!

we could be the ROYAL NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY of KITEBOARDING ENTHUSIASTS. our primary function would be to have a helluva lot of fun while advancing the technical and social parameters of introducing other charging folks into the delights of combining blunt natural power and boardriding with an unlimited supply of blank canvasses and generally having as many peak experiences as possible along the way, even driving to the beach and pumping up big kites, getting worked every now and again, racking up brutal debt etc. yet never whining to our societal brethren or thinking up ways to make their sojourn more demanding or onerous than it already is, always launching and catching anyone's kite without bitchin, telling the society when we have discovered spot X or developed a new trick or virus, or have finally worked out how to wind our lines, or have been invited to a party, or have been summonsed to court, or have got the latest dvd or any other titbit that could be of value to the society as a whole.

above all the society should have regular but spontaneous bonding sessions with its members whenever and wherever possible, preferably in howling gales and wind ravaged oceans.

when we meet a new kiter we should automatically assume he/she is a fully paid up, card carrying pillar of the society and immediately confirm this by engaging in discussion about the weather, our last session, the potential for today's sessions, the weather, what size you a). have just been out on, or b). would go out now on, or c). always go on because you only have one kite. then more weather - both the big picture analysing short and long term trends - the currently observed meteorological phenomena, and our projections of future developments.

if we have a new item of equipment, no matter how mundane, we will loudly advertise this and its various merits in great detail to all who will listen.

when we are on the water, we will always observe the upwind kite high rule, never drop in on our mates literally or figuratively, always give it the full hunge and provide our mates with many a hilarious sight, while avoiding collateral damage amongst civilians at all costs, even at the cost of our kite or our own lives (whichever is more valuable to you).

if we spot morons, wannabes, pimps, anarchists, librarians, barbarians or drunken fools, doing anything that would make our mum say "careful now........." we will point out the error of the miscreant's ways in all diplomacy, expecting them to be at least on the fringes of the society. if they are parking wardens in roman sandals teaching themselves to kite on home made kit, we will leave them to their own devices and not inform them of upcoming society bashes.

does any of this sound familiar?

let's get started! if you're in, the next time you're at the beach walk straight up to your fellow kiter, give him the westside salute and proclaim: "nanu nanu - may peace, respect and a stiff breeze be upon you and on the seed of your loins for evermore".
