# SPEED 2006/2007 Season now over .
# The challenge went down to the wire with crucial times posted by both kiters & windsurfers on the 31st March, the very last day of 365 days available for the contest !
Blair Cooke nailed 1st place kiter with a impressive 39knots 4pm on the last day, pipping Dunedin based Craig Knights .
The windsurfing was even closer .
Rob Dinkelaar dominated the rankings from day one , but unfortunalely he suffered a severe stroke in mid January, and is unable to windsurf. But he left a daunting task for anyone trying catch him . Glen Taylor posted some extremely quick runs , but required a minimum of 39 knots on the last day to equal Rob. After covering almost 45 nautical miles on Lake Clearwater on the last day , Glen nudged 39.06 knts - beating Rob by 0.02knts for the trophy. Congrats to both Cookie & Glen for their houdini acts.
Nicola Taylor took out the womens title , with Mandy Fraylick an impressive 2nd.

Congrats Cookie, would have been a little embarrassing to have been beaten by a sleeping bag from the south...

I'm going to have a damn scary winter I think, chasing the SW gales with my 10m Venom

Craig
harbour boosting, sideways buggying, harwood speed gps'ing, sometime kiteskiing, wave/washing machine kiting, gear breaking, driving about chasing the wind....

Craig.. you south island boys need to head north! both Luke and I scored speeds hitting 44.5 knots at Port Waikato mid march using those old fashioned sails on a pole... still working on getting the kite that fast but have some new spots to try out so looking forward to those winter storms!

Hi Chris,

Both Su and I are hanging out for the SW to return, we have two awesome speed tracks here on Whangarei Harbour that need paces set on.

Give us a buzz if your keen on a trip up this way Chris, we would be more than happy to show you our local.

Craig, bugger about you being beaten at the last mark - gives you the winter to really set a fast time tho.

Cheers,

DK

got a new best speed of 38.5 on the display yesterday at te wae wae lagoon near tuatapere on my 10m venom and Decay 110 Wedong.

there are some pictures about somewhere....

havent downloaded the track yet but it will be interesting being 2.5 miles long on the screen, that's a post feed-self job having just rolled on home.

so some biking and some speed board scheming and some SW storm chasing as soon as I get shifted out of this basement and down the road to my new digs...

Craig ... good speeds!.. have Paul Vliestra and the boys managed to get a windsurfer in that lagoon yet?....or is it too shallow for them? and is the north or south section from the river mouth better sailing?

Dave... be keen to have a look at Whangarei sometime when I am staying up at mangawhai!.......same if you are down in auckland and want to check out the spots on the manukau .. give me a yell

Uli... the only record that hydrophere has just taken is the nautical mile record at just over 42 knots ... Bjourn Dunkerbeck held that on a windsurfer at 41.7 knots... it has no other open record but they hope to smash the 24 hour which they will do barring hitting a whale or container at full speed!
they are pushing for the outright speed record but are a long way of Finians outright 500meter at over 48 knots!
That said its a pretty impressive craft and it would be a buzz to be sitting on the wing while its hitting 44 knots in rough water... something a kite or windsurfer will never be able to do!
