Does anyone kitesurf in Southland or know where some good spots are? I know there is a lot of wind through Foveaux Straight and Colac Bay is kiteable for the experienced and brave. Are there any spots good for the more "intermediate" kiter?

Get a buggy and get out on Oreti.

Well hmm thats my suggestion. I havent heard of many surfers(kite) from south but i know that a guy called BOND on here is going to get himself a board(land) and get a kite so maybe you want to catch up with him.

te waewae lagoon out toward tuatapere is flat and enclosed

awarua bay looks nice

the wind at oreti is probably a bit more onshore than colac bay

colac bay is fine if u dont go out oo far and pick a nice day

monkey island is more cross on than colac too

try sending g-man on here a msg or wait for his reply, he's inv based

hope that helps

how windy is it in Southland? I've checked on wind.co.nz and the two meters down there are allways going crazy.

How does Colac Bay compare windwise to the SW cape beacon? How gusty is it? Is it worth this jaffa coming down to kite there?

I have lived down there for a year before I became enlightened enough to kitesurf. If blows like buggery, Foveaux Straight it like Cook Straight and funnels the wind through. The challenge I think is finding somewhere that you can put up more than a trainer kite and live to tell the tale.
