Hey im not a total best basha man its just thats utter bollocks. Ive even got a best kite. Best is a brand that have done very well by finding the hole in the market. This is people wanting last years kites re-branded with cronically large best logos and sold as current year models. In other words they copy other brands kites and sell them for cheaper. They have done well out of it so good on em.

just to clear up, i wasnt having a go at best, but i think your comparison to slingshot is.....well, it doesnt work on so many levels for a direct comparison to be made for me.......best is popular, like slingshot........but i ride slingshot, and i think the qaulity of a singshot kite is still better than a best kite. thats just me and my 2 cents.

From the perspective of a guy that just flies homebuilt foils with the occasional arc thrown in and has never tried kitesurfing, I speak from little authority when I say that ALL LEI companies are simply just rebranded incriments of kite technology. BEST isn't the only offender.

I mean what the hell does "Iron Heart" mean for the Vegas 06?
Or "Shift System" for the Raven 06?

It's pathetically ambiguous, to a degree that a normal person can't understand what the hell is so terific about North using chunks of metal in their new kites.

I think it's a decoy. To make people feel stupid because they can't understand what all these new terms mean. As a result the masses become too afraid to ask, for fear of public humiliation. It's a professional smoke screen of bullshit, created by the companies to make us believe they are making progress of some kind. Basically put, the fancy terms mean nothing, the masses just think that they do.

For those of you who want to criticise me for going along the lines of Harrius, don't bother. There is a reason why his argument appears to be "out of date," it's because that argument still remains true. It's not old. It's just solid standing, it has stood the test of time. After all, if someone had managed to properly dismiss this argument (go on, give it another shot JK...) then nobody would use it. But nevertheless, it still remains undisputed in this thread.

BEST isn't the best. They are just as bad as all the others.

blizzard anyone can go onto the naish or north website and find out what the iron heart or shift system is......they even have pretty images and movies to help you understand how they work....if not talk to a shop that sells naish or north.....

brands are going to make up new names and slogans for there new developments because they are new and they want the market to know that.

I get where k is coming from though. But still, there is no need to become so abstract with the names. If a consumer has to research the kite to even know what they are trying to sell, then that is bad marketing. Good marketing names should be simple and easy to understand. They should advertise the product well, so the consumer knows exactly what the new "development" actually does.

Thrasher, cuben fibre is an interesting spanner in the works. The only reason nobody copied BEST, is because nobody could. The company that produced cuben fibre for BEST was bound by a contract, enabling them to ONLY make the cuben fibre for BEST. Nobody else could source the fabric.

The truth is, nobody can follow anyone else, because that is the nature of LEI design. they are all so incredibly similar. It appears although North is following Naish, who in turn just copy Slingshot but Cabrinha is actually just lagging in technology behind Naish, who have been playing the game longer than Wipika. There is no fixed statement than can be made about the originality of modern LEI designs because they all remain so similar.

How can we determine which is better? We can't. There is no "better kite" in terms of LEI design, just different types of flying style. It would be unfair to compare LEI kites which are so similar in the first place. It all depends on how you ride and how you want to ride.

for a foil flyer u sure know alot about LEI's, but BEST is in the lead :twisted:

It is all opinion, and take it as constructive info.

It appears to me that bow kites have generally made kiting safer for newcomers as I have seen less riders getting dragged up the beach and hurt generally than in past years.

The pullies and bridles add to things to go wrong - and they do go wrong.
I personally know 2 people that came very close to possible death by a bow kite due to in one case a jammed pulley straight after launch
(resulting in deathloops) and in the second case a tip wrapped in the bridle (resulting in deathloops). A lesson never to replace 'keep your distance' with 'don't worry I fly a bow I can launch closer to danger'. Both had only luck on their side.

Bow kite riders mostly from what I have seen don't ride with leashes. I have seen more bow kites flying up the beach than any other types in the past year. God help the person who ends up with 2 kites to deal with. That killed a Geman rider a few years ago.

I have not seen bow kites jump as high as c kites in light to moderate winds but I have seen them go big in high winds.

Bow kites are higher aspect ratio by design and so of course they will have more pull than a c kite for given area flat. But it is the curve of a c kite that can help damp the forces of the winds.

The vast majority of freestyle riders still ride c kites.

When you have the top and most respected riders in the world telling you how your c kite or last years bow is now obselete I totally agree that kitesurf marketing is way over the top to the extent of worrying the hell out of potential rippers, and that style 'blind them with science/over technical crap' type marketing totally does my head in!

NJOI whatever kite you ride and may summer bring epic north easterlies, some butter smooth water, and huge and many cyclone swells!

El Nino should deliver crankin SW winds this summer. Uncrowded flat water perfection at Flat Island, Huia, Bramley, Pine Harbour and Stoners/Ihumateo Rd.

When i chatted to Shannon and Clinton earlier on this year they were the most down to earth guys you could meet... and certainly weren't scaring any potential rippers off. They have won a lot of friends out this way with all the young rippers on da eastside having a BEST kite in their quiver.

as for freestyle riders using c kites... not out this way. we've found the waroo very user friendly and hence great for freestyle!

Us eastsdiers will take the piss out of anyone cos none of us have grown up and gotten crusty. there is also a big group of groms out there that love the sport. They love winding the oldies up and so do I. Just incase the southerners get on the "bash akl" bandwagon. we kite all year round up here. It cranks nearly every day and it isn't that gusty. i knew you were jealous ...... BOOOOYAHHH!!!!

speaking of which the tide isn't too far away from it's primo stage at flat island. now i know casper is keen and so is clifford but anyone that isn't a ghost or a big red dog out there who wants to to charge in some flat water and 25 knots of SW?

the wind dropped heaps. Decided that i'd go to Bramley with Grant instead as no-one was keen on Flat Island at 2pm despite there being over 20 knots. It was light and gusty at Bramley when we got there at 3:30. gusts to not much over 15 knots, maybe 20 at the most.

not enough for the 7m waroo and within an hour it was gusting to 10.

PS For the record - as no one seems to actually realise some simple details: Naish has only just released an SLE for all terrrain kiting - the 07 Boxer. Last years SLE kite marketed as the 'shockwave' was indeed true to its branded name. It was specifically set up for core down the line waveriding, as is the 07 shockwave. As we all know the self proclaimed beast from the east has no comprehension about what this involves or any understanding that this is the apex of the sport. Suprisingly then, it did not feel at all like a waroo... But ride it powered on a 5'5" waveboard in the naki and you will begin to understand why it is the way it is... a wave kite... as all the manufacturers information openly pointed out (ignored by everyone buying this kite last year as a beginners kite...)

However the 07 boxer is another story...

I allready have some clips of kitepilot Kris doing his old school varials and superpowered boardoff tricks etc and i have some footage of the young guns like Jarrod and BLAIRBLAIR doing some moves. This is raw shit... i love it raw and flawed, no backing tracks, just the sound of the wind hitting the mic and the sound of the beast satisfied with yet another sucessful vid of Kris pullin off another nicely executed move. lots of "wooooohoooooo" etc etc.

now all i need is a proper DV camera that takes clips in something other than .mov files so i can create movies on movie maker... oh yes and of course a computer with a DVD writer would be nice :twisted:

This ain't a BEST promo vid either. Kris who is featured lots in these vids i've made rides SLINGSHOT... the origonal hardcore wakestyle kitebrand and to be honest the innovators of lots of new gadgets that we see on kites today.

BEST have become a massive player in the last 2 years and have certainly embraced this new school hardcore style of kiting that we see... the cuben fibre technology making it even more hardcore with the yarga pro etc.

A lot of the BEST baggin comes from the tall poppy syndrome... it happened ages ago with Naish especially when the X2 came out... the X2 was (and still is i mite add) a kickass kite and everyone was trying to find a fault with it and all they could find was a bit of colour bleeding. People then took a swipe at the durablility of the kites... my X2 lasted over 200 sessions so no issues there :twisted:

i could give genuine comments about all the kites i've tried and owned and have done so on my website and may repost all those comments (on my wesbite of course). i have my quotes and my slogans which may sound offensive to some but i certainly ain't affiliated with BEST at all and certainly don't have an issue with other kite brands. I have mostly positive stuff to say about the previous kites that i haver owned or flown. all have been kickass.
