Hi there,

am planning to head out to one of the pacific islands soon (next week?) for two weeks and saw that some here really liked the Funky Fish resort in Fiji. Does the recommendation still stand?

I'm going by myself, the quality of the kite spot is very important to me, nightlife would be nice and backpackerish prices nice .

then why you headed to Fiji then? unless you're on Denerau, or Beachcomber, there ain't no nightlife (unless you like drinking kava and fighting with the locals). The kite spot is Plantation Island (unless you got a yacht to take you to the outer islands) - but this spot ain't where the night life is unless you take a posse with you... take a blow up doll. And backpackerish prices? It is actually cheaper to fly to Cairns and stay there, but you'll find out for yourself I'm sure...

You'd be better of headed to Raro & kiting Muri lagoon, or there's another secret spot only 2.5hrs away from NZ that is absolutely world class, but you'll have to find out about that by yourseelf...

ps don't be fooled by the photos they have on their website. Those spots are either nowhere near your resport, or are very carefully selected to hide what a crap spot it really is. My advice to you is DON'T GO THERE for a kiting holiday...

Thanx for the advice. Actually been to Pt Douglas and Cairns last year and wasn't extremely lucky. Also seems that you need a car around there, adding $s to the cost. The nightlife is actually secondary, if I think about it.

what about beachcomber,
it has back packer style accomodation
and a great nightlife .
you probably won't need that doll, otherwise plantation
is popular for kiting.

The Funky Fish is good if your going with a crew & into surfing as well as kiting, as the wind tends to be week on week off. User friendly beach there too, but it's very very quite, & $$$. Beachcomber is the fun place and good for a kite. Nananu-i-Ra, an island off Rakiraki is the cheapest & windiest on the mainland, lots of backpackers, pretty cool place, about a $10 public bus ride from Nadi to Rakiraki, then $10 boat ride to island. $20-25 per night, take a box of food, but you can buy food from the small restaurant & shop.
There's more going on there than Funky Fish.
