heh, this is a will special indeed!!

4 vents, instead of the standard 6.
gauze in the TE to drain the sand and prevent profile distortion.
+ a new "go fast" standard colour scheme, each one unique to the buggy brigade

Have a look at the actual plans at www.wingine.nl

We have the S50 model, under the junkie section. It's a racekite through and through.... now kiter about that race.....

Wind on Saturday looks like a crappy NW'er, but Sunday has potential with a possible 10-15knot strengthening N-NE and light rain. Low Tide is around 2pm.

So talking about the Junkie....
4 vents, instead of the standard 6.
gauze in the TE to drain the sand and prevent profile distortion.
+ a new "go fast" standard colour scheme, each one unique to the buggy brigade

Question: -
It's a 5.0m configuration with some of the LE vents missing right? Whats the reason for that..? Stability?

Did you do some vent testing to assess the impact..? The latest Ozone Samurai's have the central LE vents removed, is this something you considered..?

Gauze in the TE...? So it's like a vent on the training edge..? Any thoughts about using velco flaps..?

Does the 'go-faster' colour scheme really work..?

What material did you use and the approximate material usage and cost..?

BTW.... I think it looks awesome and cant wait to see it in the flesh so to speak.

Respect.

Question: -

the kite tends to stay inflated better if there are less holes for the air to escape

Did you do some vent testing to assess the impact..? The latest Ozone Samurai's have the central LE vents removed, is this something you considered..?

impacts are for idiots.. kites are designed for air not ground as it is far less solid

Gauze in the TE...? So it's like a vent on the training edge..? Any thoughts about using velco flaps..?

gauze on the trailing edge of the profiles... inside the kite...

Does the 'go-faster' colour scheme really work..?

yes altho i cannot tell you the classified reasons behind the benifits

What material did you use and the approximate material usage and cost..?

what ever it was it was $12 a metre and all up the kite probibly cost less than $200

Hey Spig,

The main reason for reducing the number of vents is to maintain a clean leading edge. The vent is always placed at the stagnation point (the position where the air particles don't know whether to go over the kite, or under it). If the vents are slightly off the stagnation point then massive amounts of drag can become present, as the kite won't be working at it's maximum efficiency.

If you have an open celled kite, then the vents act like a sort of "air brake" An open celled kite will be harder to luff. You can't normally edge with an open celled kite so easily.

I guess it just increases the edge of the window by maybe 5 degrees. However, I haven't yet built two identical kites, with different vent systems to test side by side...

Also, the air stays INSIDE the kite through turns. This is the main reason for reducing vents

As for the gauze, take a peak inside an arc if you haven't already. The end of the profiles in the junkie look identical to those in any generation of arc kite.

Why the gauze? Most kites by commercial guys have holes cut in the profiles. I can't think of a better way than to ruin the structural integrity than by doing this!! The kite can stretch out of shape but then again, a system of cross venting is needed to have air flowing through the kite. I guess it's just cheaper and easier to cut a hole, than to sew gauze. What did you mean by "velcro flaps?"

As for the go faster colour scheme, yes it does work! Each of the brigade will have a colour scheme for their own kites. The green stripe on Symptoms will be replaced with a different colour for each member:

Blizzad/ Will = red
Zenon/ Joe = gold
Symptom/ Mason = fluro green

Cost:
For a 5m kite I reckon we used 15-18 mtrs of chikara (the good stuff)

Took it out for more testing today, and it's still not there. The AoA is perfect, and brake tension is getting there, but the cross bridle is just killing me!! I've spent maybe 3-4 hours trying to tune it, but it ain't there yet. Maybe another hours work should finally get it. Should be ready to rock on Sunday, with a perfectly tuned bridle setting. We had it out in the buggy at buggy spot x, and man o man... it's like number 1. Greatest kite I've ever built I reckon. When the bridle's done, performance should increase by another 20% or so. At 4 knots we could easily generate traction.

Cheers, Will

Cheers Will....

As usual you blow me away with your understanding of the dynamics and construction of foil kites, and with your ability to build them. I can't wait to see how the Junkie handles. Can I put an order in NOW...?? (I'll have a 'BLACK' stripe... )

I have everything crossed for some half decent wind at the weekend so that I can see the Junkie in action..., is buggy spot 'X' where I think it is...? Plus I have not flown for nearly 2 months and it's really killing me...

Yes Spig you know exactly where buggy spot x is

And hmm bout that order...Na ill we will have to talk it through its a huge weekend to build these things and with all the time you have to spend bridling them ( which wont be as long as the first ) it mounts up.

O well bring on sunday for your sake...

Hey Spig,

ahhh all the foil theory has just come from numerous hours spent on the foildesign group at www.groups.yahoo.com plus the need for cheap kit!!

As for how fast we can crank these things out:
Symptom and I worked solidly for a weekend:

Fri - 6pm until 11pm (5 hours)

Sat 8pm - 6am Sun morning (basically an all nighter. We normally make it to like 4 am or so, but 6 was a very long night) (10 hours)

then we slept for 4 hours

10pm Sun - 4pm. This is a guess, as we had to get the hot knife repaired during the day, which set us back a bit. (6 hours)

So that's 2(5+6+10) = 42 hours total.

I reckon we can knock it back to 35

I think we'll need to have an executive meeting on the Sunday to discuss whether or not we can let our precious colour scheme become public domain

Cheers, Will

Hmmm maybe we could modify it for him... Give him a slightly different colour scheme.

Or we could just invite hiim to join the angry eyed buggyiers then we can call it the angry eyed kiters. Thats something that calls for a meeting of the commitee. Shall we say Sunday...

Sundays wind is looking good for the estury only then a downwinder to the pier or something like that. i think we should all meet up there.

What the rest of you guys think...Spig? Norwester? And wheres that random buggy dude with the c quads???

I won't be leaving the park for anything more than a 10 knot NE at FULL low tide... I (and the whole squad for that matter) have spent too many sessions mucking around on the beach...

Doesn't really justify the whole trip out for me...

I'll have a blue stripe on mine please if you calculate the hours spent 42 times the hourly rate (youth rates)$6.50 cost of fabric etc $200.00 we get a total of $473.00
does it come with handles or a bar ?????
At that calculation still a fair price
But i reckon i could get a second hand Blade for cheaper ..................
oh thats right i did LOL LOL LOL
Seriously i would rather put money in the pocket of young fella having a bit of a go than some big over seas company ....
Keep up the good work buggy squad one day all we will hopefully see on the beach in CHCH will be your kites....
So meet at the Estury on Sunday is it .....

Ok so we need to organise this as according to william he cant be bothered going out if theres crappy wind direction whereas me and mason would prob want to just to catch up with ya all.

Take a look on here sat night and we can figure out where we meet and when... I like the idea of at the beach but i also think that if Norwester and Spig are up for it you guys could come to buggy spot x and we could have a day there.

Norwester what u think? beach if its NE and buggy spot x if its any other direction.

I will monitor the conditions at the beach, (North of the Pier as that is where I live), and post windspeed & direction readings into this thread from around 10:00am on Sunday.

If you have my cell number you can also call me...

Unfortunately I do not have transport on Sunday so Buggy Spot 'X' might be difficult.

Should be good, but as I'm sure we all know, the wind could still stuff us around

Weather has been very, very constant for the past week. wind up at like 10am each day, building to maybe 10 knots...

It should be good, but monitor the high over the island aye 8)

So to sum up today....

Me...Awesome best session yet
syMptom...Awesome best session yet
Blizzad... (No show)
Spiglord...Good day to get back at it after 2 months
Norwester...Good day considering he had no harness.

I think that that was the first decent entry into the new season as it was an awesome day. Im not sure of exact specs but i think that we had a nice 20knt day and the result was awesome we had great speed runs and i think that Norwester and Spiglord would agree with me in saying syMptom and i were hitting 50 kmph and then later we were even faster.

Forgot to mention that speed was with a 1.7 and 1.5!!!
That was after the wind increased steadily from me flying the five meter down to the three meter until i blew out the bridal on that!!!! forced me onto the 1.7!

Unfortunatly we didnt have any official way of measuring our speed as we didnt have a gps or speedo avalible.

All up it was an awesome day.

Bring on next weekend.

Spot on Zenon, could not have put it better myself.

The wind built through the afternoon from a gentle average of 8 knots up to 14-15 knot, (gusting 18-20), by the time I packed it in for the day. You and syMptom were really moving on the bigger kites, next time I'll bring my GPS and we'll see just how fast you can go.

Norwester must have arms of steel to hold on to is Blade & then Bullet all afternoon, I struggled even with my bar & harness. I hope his arms did not lock up on the way back to Ash Vegas.

Blizzard must be kicking himself.... nuff said.

Great start to the new Season, lets hope for more wind and more kiters out on the beach over the coming months.

Hmm, Joe, I was just wondering how INCREDIBLY awesome the 3.3 speed would have been. Seriously, would have owned everything else with 3+ wheels, South of the pier.

I guess Im kinda gutted that I missed the session. But to be honest I don't see that I could of had much fun out yesterday anyways... seeing as my board needs new trucks and I haven't finished my buggy yet. But the kit will all be ready late October.

But I'll be all set for a good as session next week. Us buggy guys are gonna make a trailer for carrying a person/gear. That way we can all take turns riding, and ride under a little more power due to the added weight. Plus, NO more backpacks!!

Fingers crossed eh...

Still reckon I blitzed both of these claimed records when I was cranking on my 4.5 in 15 knots, coming around the estuary point.

It's like being in a slingshot...cos the angle of the wind changes relative to the land, and you start heading further downwind, without having to worry about the kite dipping.

hmmm... I reckon that's where we should try to set the records next time, would give a far higher max speed than on the straight and narrow

But, yet again we need a GPS... This Sunday had better live up to expectations. Also, I'm up for a Saturday session if the wind's up.

Geeze, it's only Monday and I'm already focussed on the weekend

Sorry to 'rain-on-your-parade' Blizz but the tides are pretty crap this coming weekend for any high speed beach runs.

Low tide is early morning and evening on both days:-
