This is going to be an ongoing nation wide competition.

Fasted speed achived in a buggy or on a board.

I know that you boarders think that us buggyiers will go faster but it will still be good to see some boards making a large speed.

Grap a gps or bike speedo or anything else that will clock your speed and go for it. then post your speed up here.

And please be honest about it. we dont want any arses getting a reading from a car and posting it. thats just crap.

With Perrin clocking over 100kph on his modified PL comp and 12m Shockwave its a hard act to follow. Though you can put me down for 84kph on a homebrew buggy and 3.2C-quad at Muriwai.

I plan to have my new race buggy done in the next fortnight and in time for the Blue balls. Most of the work is done on the frame leaving the padding and the seat. Playing with a new idea for a suspension back-axle to dampen the rear wheels and help keep them on the ground and hold the side-forces at higher speed. Fingers crossed Ill have the prototype in action too.

Good Idea guys.
My fastest, on my trusty Quadrolution mountain board, is 42.8mph.
Dunno what that is in km/h. Its the fastest on a board so far over this side of the world, Come and have a go if you think youre hard enough!!

Almost 70kph! That's definitely big in my book. Grass or on a nice smooth beach?

Fastest I dared go on a mountainboard was around 45kph though we clocked well over 80kph with snowboards on the golfcourse in front of the chateau on Ruapehu. One of the best days ever. But at least that feels safe and locked in compared to an APT Abyss doing a 45kph power wobble.

interesting to note, the fastest kites are smallish 5-12m because they can move faster through the air!

Hey 50 psi,

yea, small kites can generate a heap more power when they move faster. An easy way to visualise it is this:

If a kite is moving at 40 knots in say a 20 knot wind, the kite isn't actually experiencing the 20 knots. Its like you are flying the kite in a 40 knot wind instead !!

Very cool concept. I think its proper name is "apparent wind" or something like that.

The biggest benefit is that small kites don't drift back in the window when you exceed apparent wind. This is usually after youre stopping to sine the kite because at the speed youre travelling its generating enough power already. A little bit faster and the kite is hard to keep in the edge of the window because of its drag and is powering up making you bear a little downwind. Shortly thereafter if youre not getting ripped sideways a bit youre going for a downwind jaunt. That is if youre on an 8.5m C-quad in too much wind. :O) But these days you just sheet out and then sheet out a little more.

Im not sure that when u say small kites 50psi you say 5-12m we have kites that are 1.7 or 1.5 and 2 they are small kites and if your not carefull can be insanely fast especially if you do loops.

But Blizz is right the small kites generate thier power through speed as they dont have area to make power.

But i think its intellegent to have both small and big. especially if you want to to speed as it means you can choose the best size kite for the wind range.

So who's going to Raglan this weekend for the Blue balls buggy bash? Big winds and perfect for a dash at smattering a few kite landspeed records. Just gotta get the speedometers on the buggies and double check all the bolts! :O)

76.8kph at Raglan river mouth on a 2.2m C-quad and custom race buggy on Saturday. Not the best conditions with the wind running fairly cross shore and rotoring around the point. Intersting getting lifted on a 2.2m kite. Started Sunday on a 6.3m C-quad and quickly dropped to a 3.2m though only got up to 34kph as conditions were to variable and riding mainly in survival mode. Managed to get lofted and landed fine but mucked up a few seconds later trying to scrub off speed while sliding and catching a soft patch. Gotta love full face helmets!!!

Awesome man. Sounds like a total blast. Us boys from Christchurch should have a roadtrip up there sometime soon.

That speed of 78kph is gonna be hard to beat. I'm sure we'll get it eventually though, we have our secret weapons to launch yet

Not my fastest yet but lots of time to tune and improve for the Moose meet in October.

Perrin was starting to do some sick speed and getting quite a bit of air boosting that little 2.2 N'gen. Though going to need some new alloy rims for his buggy at this rate.

I've always wanted to put some large scooter mags on my buggy and saw someone this weekend who'd done just that. Time to go get some quotes and turn some new stub axles. Steering geometry is not 100% but not far off either.

Hmm, you mean the wheels off like a 50cc scooter? That could be interesting...

Also, do you guys use weights? I've seen pictures of all the dutch guys with a set of weights on the front forks, as well as other places, to help keep the buggy stable at high speed.

100kp/h is the first step. 8)

Exactly that. I've already upgraded to barrows with bigger bearings(25mm axle dia.) with my freestyle using 25mm stubs. These bearing runs so much nicer than the little bearings in the PL barrow wheels. Next step to upgrade to some wheels that are meant for speed and the large 50cc scooter wheels are perfect for this.

The weights are for balancing the buggy mostly fore and aft of the CoG with the person in it ie. a shorter person with the seat moved forward might find the back breaks out easier than the front and will add weights in the back to compensate and visa versa for a taller person.

Wicked, thanks for clearing that one up.

What dates have been set for the moose meet? Hopefully a couple of us from Christchurch ( angry eyed brigade) will be able to make the trip up this year. And then we'll have some real beach to test the true speed limits of our kit.

At the moment we are focussing on improving the kiting side of it. Specifically, race foils and higher aspect arc kites. I think reducing the drag from the kite is the key.

Cheers, Will

7-8 October
www.kiteworks.co.nz/Targets/upcoming%20events.htm

After foilshape there's not much to be done other than remove as much parasitic drag as possible ie. bridle, lines etc. You can improve shape but that also incurs weight and performance penalties. The arcs got rid of the bridle and you can't do much about the flying lines. Arc's biggest contribution is the ability to change AoA and that is a big plus being able to reduce profile drag at higher airspeeds.

...used to be a bit of a contributor on the foilmaker forum. Just reading these days.

HAHA, yea foildesign was the place to be man. I'm a member too, username blizzadrider.

Shame that the forum is practically dead now. Hardly any new stuff goes on there. At the moment I've got:

1 Gual 6.5 (my most frequently used kite) Awesome for cruising, but luffs really bad when jumping.

1 Junkie S20. Favourite kite of all time. The sheer speed of this puppy is unbelievable. Likes to be kept moving, and will start to go turbocharged once you reach windspeed.

1 homebrew 4.5, AR about 3.5. Similar to a waterfoil. Best kite for medium windrange. Absolutely awesome edge of the window capabilities, brilliantly stable.

Also, Ive got a speed 3.3 that is new to the force. Gotta test this thing out yet. And the angry eyed buggy squad have got three new junkie s50 kites on the way. These things are legend in the world of racekites.

It's a damn shame about the moose meet, as I'm overseas until the 10 of October. It'll have to be next year...

I still think there is room for improvement in the world of racekites. Once we start to reduce the amount of tip drag, alongside with limiting bridle, then things will start to take off. Check out emiel's homepage for pictures and info.

As for high aspect arcs, the wingine team still have another speed on the way....

I think Emiel's is: www.kitedesign.nl

Ok so on sunday the 30th July syMptom and i were flying along with the 1.7 and 1.5m kites at an unofficial speed of average 55kmph and peaking at 60 - 65kmph.

Next time we will have something to measure it so we can make it officail.

(Would have been faster had i not blown the bridal lines on the left hand side of my 3m )

Good stuff!

Just get a cheap $15 wireless cycle speedo off Trademe. Theyre dead simple to mount and probably the hardest part is getting the wheel circumference dialled in and that aint that hard. Nice thing about them is you can keep the display unit in your jacket or mount it anywhere on the buggy as the wireless unit has a fair bit of range.

Lost quite a few wired ones, ripped off in the dunes during a badly planned manoeuvre because of where they were mounted. Also dont be disappointed when you realise youve only been doing 40kph either. Speed feels different with your butt 2 inches off the ground not that Im doubting your speed. Just personal experience! :O)

I know what you mean but we were unofficailly cocked by the car that was drving down marine parade on the other side of the dunes.

But i know what ya mean as 2inches off the ground everything changes.

O well ill scan over trademe or ill go to the bike shop and get something from there at a cost of $50 which aint to bad.

Yup, 70kph suddenly feels scarey and once you get closer to 90kph you realise these buggies aren't actually made for it. When Perrin said he was a bit worried when he clocked over a 100kph I believe him.

I'll see if I can find one similar to what I got off Trademe and PM a link to ya. They're nothing fancy and look your typical cheap plastic knock-off but they work and they're cheap. Once you've lost a few $50 ones it's almost worth a Garmin Gecko. $15 is just a few beers worth. Someday I will need to get a GPS so I can see how fast I am on water and snow though!

I have been thinking bout GPS and looking at the Garmin etrex yellow one as its a basic gps not with any fancy maps but it will still be mre accurate than a speedo.

but then the thing is id rather have a new kite than a gps at this point.
