Hmm, to kitesurf or to landboard? That is the question for a kite addicted junkie.

sub 10 degrees ....

mayeb you need to invest in booties and hoodie and extra thermals. Cold is all about the correct clothing. if you have the stuff for the cold weather then you shouldn't have a problem.

I remember having surfed a few times at New Brighton Beach in CHCH after snow had fallen.
We left footprints in the fresh snow over the sand on our way to the water.

Full 5mm steamer, gloves, booties, neoprene helmet and all the interfaces between suit and gloves etc. were taped up to allow as little ingress of water as possible.

We were getting about 1 to 1.5 hours prior to hypothermia setting in. When your sense of balance starts to go, it's a good indicator that it's time to get out of the water.

I guess it could be worse for Kiteboarding as you are constantly dealing with a higher windchill factor (unless you're in a dry suit).

The North island certainly is a tad warmer for watersports in winter

That happened to me last year in Wellington. no booties or hoddie and i litterally froze to the core. after about an hour i started to crash the kite. couldn't fly for shit. figured that was my que to get out. took me from petone to Levin with the heater on full blast to warm back up.... man that was biterly cold.

... if you register on windguru.cz , which is free you then have options to tweak the output , its contained in the FAQ on the wind guru main page. E.g at Orewa in a SE wind its always much lower wind strength than wind guru thinks it will be so you modify the output for that wind direction to get a better result . from memory you can also choose when your stars go blue by setting your limit that you can handle with out a wet suit or what ever .... the rest is up to you to do some experiments if you want.
