ooooh!!! i better officially book the time away.... there'l be some rage factor from the missis but the moose is worth it! i missed it last year due to a broken arm. I was sad indeed.

Full moon you say!... may not even need lights... aaaah i'm getting excited! Almost as excited as Al with a new kiting hat!! but not quite.

3 days of moosing.. ooohaarrrrgggg. i'll be a broken man by the end of that. maybe a 72hr lanboarding challenge is in order?... oh dear but i also want to roost those lagoons as well...

and i'm going to steal someone buggy and ride some dunes and i want to fly some of these new frenzies i've been hereing about and and and ,...... boom. (exploded head)

Science lesson:
Ice is fresh water... the process of freezing water pushes the salt out of it. Early desalination plants worked this way till they discovered more efficient regenarative reverse osmosis. All that ice you see in the poles is fresh water. There may be a coating of salt as it's exuded which will turn things salty I guess.

Me thinks the man with the cold beer is king at the moose!!!

but thinking about getting one of these!!!

http://www.colemannz.co.nz/products/COCAI1703

ive got a 12v plug in the boot of the outback, so that means i could charge you all $5 to pump your kites (cos you are soooooo hungover) and make gas money!!!.

ohh interesting, so its a solution ?! the air pump has volume but no pressure you need to finish it with the regular pumps any how. i have had some ideas about that too.

compressed air cylinder like the painballers use with 3500 psi weighing less than a kilo and a blow off valve to limit the pressure in the bladder to a few psi. super fast and about 400 bucks worth. the rollsroyce inflato matic.

anyway.... Moose moose moose

yeah i figure you would have to finish it off manual style, but i have been running the NZboardstore demo last weekend and pumping about 10 kites is pretty tiring!! if i used one of these i would save myself heaps of pumping even if i have to finish them off.

i thought about a lpg bottle. prefill that run a regulator set a 8psi and the relief valve at 9. not sure how many kite yourd pump without having to refill the lpg bottle. but it would be a few. you could also at 12v pump that tops up the bottle inbetween times.

then a scuba tank is the obvious option 3500 psi tank and the relief valve plus low pressure reg to make it fool proof. it would pump up a good few kites, enough for a session or two.

the paintball AIR cylinder is much more portable but wouldnt do more than a couple of kites, fine for personal use.

CO2 might seem like a good idea after reading this e.g. soda stream but its NOT . it would blow out your kite thanks to how CO2 expands when the temp changes just a bit. Just a warning for those keen to Macguyver it .

trade me ofton has old oxygen bottles from oxyacetaline welding plants, the home workshop ones are the same size as average scuba tanks and have a 3000psi working pressure for next to peanuts..the problem with that is, who do you know that has a 3000psi air compressor.....

probably nobody... and for good reason.....3000psi is a bomb..

its easy to hook up a standard 120psi air compressor to a lpg tank and bobs your hungover kite inflating uncle..

yeah the issue is how many times you would fill a kite with a Lpg tank. from the info i could get quickly on the web a standard dive tank would hold 80 cubic feet of air, not sure but ive talked to a guy who said that he would get 8 inflates out of a dive tank.

where as the 12volt pump would last for ages ( maybe)

this is really intresting, a proper scuba/paintball cpmpressor

cgi.ebay.com/Cornelius-3-Stage-Scuba-Pai...;hash=item53e3dcab4a

that would work with a scuba/oxygen tank.

that one is 27v dc and only 1500 psi but it looks good and is pretty cheap

i just sold a 4500 psi compressor 3 weeks ago to a customer for starting a Vampire jet ! that was a highlight of the week about 4 grands worth...

RE ice, any fishing shop sells salt ice, 5kg and 10 kg bags, can last 3 to 4 days need 1 big ass chilli just for ice and smaller chlli bins for beer. Key is to open ice storage bin as little as possible and drain any water.

So..I'm cruising along Petone esplanade on the way to do the food shopping for the week, and behold on my marvelous beach are 3 kite surfers enjoying a nice southerly. So quickly I race to Pak n Sav...chuck whatever into the trolley(retrospectively, now I'm not sure what I chucked in is edible)...and raced back to try and have a chat with some fellow sportsman.
He appears slowly rising out of the water, all James Bond like(yeah I know, I know, this is my second James Bond themed post). I approach warily and ask the most important question...
Are you going to the Moose next week?
He looks at me with those piercing eyes and says...What's the Moose?
What's the Moose...surely he jests..I clarify further...with one word Muriwai
Oh he says, you mean those Buggy and Landboard people!
Okay, so am I naive. Doesn't everyone know about the Moose. I know and I can't even make it..sob. I thought all of New Zealand knows...

Actually I had a good chat even though he hadn't heard of the Moose. Very nice person.
Tomorrow I'm getting a soapbox on Courtenay place and proclaiming the Moose is almost here...and watch the followers flock to me......

ahaaa, but he did know about the buggiers and landboarders???

i guess there are new kitesurfers buying into the sport on a weekly basis, and it takes time for word of an event like this to get around to all the newcomers...its not in mags or on the radio so its pure word of mouth and this forum that has to reach all nz kiteflyers...

personally tho, i quite like the fact thats it isnt common knowlage, its not like its a private party or anything but you never get a heap of freeloaders coming allong and steeling all your beer...everybody their is a kiter or want to be one...

Yeah, I think your right. I enjoyed the Blue Balls at Kawhia and the fact that there were only a handful of people made it seem like an achievement just to be there, some form of Kite Buggy rite of Passage. I'm looking forward to my first moose meet when ever we're able to head up there. If only it was this year..

Re: MOOSE MEET OCTOBER KITESURF 1 year, 7 months ago #25270

what's the craic with Aucklander's and/or locals staying over? You guys heading back home of an evening or hanging out and boozing? If so, any night in particular?

Also - if the wind is piss light are you landies amenable to showing us sea-serpents what this land-lark is all about?

we're based by the surf rescue hut, right? Ah, so many questions...

no bro its at the north end of muriwai beach. drive 50km up the beach and camp in the dunes! enjoy the flat water lagoons and waves out front.

bring a tent and camp all weekend. drive up friday night and do nothing other than kite, eat, drink, poo in sand dunes, sleep (optional) until monday morning.

Sure you can have a go. You might even find that its fun! certainly fangin at 50kph in 12 knots on the hard sand is more fun than struggling to stay upwind on the water in those light winds.

your welcome to have a try in a buggy, just need to ask one of us, its that simple
the tides are such that you can drive up in the morning and out at night on all days and stay at the camp site , but its 45mins of beach driving each way so most bring a tent. saturday night will be the best night, but its more about what the weather does over the 4 days. no matter what the wind charts say the moose prety much has wind every day of the year, us landos have monster kites and down to 2m2 so we can use what ever there is on offer.

SOMETHING no one has said so far is bring a big rubbish bag and take away every thing you came with and someone elses crap they were too lazy to take away, leave it better than you found it.

So I was thinking of heading up to drive along the beach at low tide saturday arvo - is there a group of people heading along then? If so, what time are people meeting etc. I have a (smallish!)fridge in my van so can provide cold beer!!!

Re: MOOSE MEET OCTOBER KITESURF 1 year, 7 months ago #25306

Ah, so it is still up in the dunes! I was, for some bizarre reason, under the impression it had been moved to lower Muriwai.

So, it's out onto the beach at Muriwai and then a 45km hack up the beach? Will a Legacy handle that?

Looking forward to using the land gear (thanks guys) IF the wind is light

the hardest bit is getting to the beach on the little access track. if your legacy can handle that, your sweet.

ps you want to use a landboard! thats what real men use!!! hehhehe(waits for on slaught of seated fellows to retort)

Pss i'll probably have done 300km by then so i'll be happy to lend the monster board and have a sit down in a buggy.
