Hey all,

Been searching/fishing all over the web for a DIY GPS mount for and etrex. what do you all use for your buggies? I have one lying around so I thought I'd slap it on there! Anyway I couldn't find jack so I made a template out of cardboard, mashed it together and then drew up some better plans for one mad out of metal. Thought I'd share it here in case anyone wants to do the same, or if anyone has any ideas or suggestions.

NOTE: I haven't made mine out of metal yet so I can't guarantee it fits perfectly but its designed to be lined with foam a few mills thick like you can get from craft shops with a bugger (cm's) chunk up the top so you slide it in head first into the foam and then once its in the foam at the top keeps it snug and in place. Also the dashed line is a fold.

So what do you all use?

Cheap cellphone pouches are great for a quick holder. Ziptie the belt clip to the downtube.

Sheetmetal holders work well, especially if you line them with rubber or eva foam so they don't mar the GPS unit. Just check that you don't interfere with its reception before mounting it as it can block some units.

Never thought of this!!!! Is there and "ideal metal" to use? One that interferes less? hmmmmmmmmm...

Nah, metal is metal in this regard. I made a similar mistake when I tried to integrate a holder in my downtube on a previous build... would have looked great too. I think PTW and the others all use Garmin Etrex's too. Assume if you match his design it should work well enough.

Alternatively I've seen people heat and bend something like acrylic or polycarbonate plastic as a substitute too. Using a bit of wood as a mold and a heatgun or even putting it all in an oven to soften enough to bend.

I have some chunks of solid PVC waiting for spare time in the shed so I can make a plastic shell with a clear acrylic face on the milling machine.

I,m looking at changing from using a Etrex holder( cellphone type ) mounted to the down tube.
to a holder like what jimmy22 uses, from ( buggy bags )UK.
and mount it to my fore arm on the inside stitcted to the straps of my elbow pads.
Because my GPS keeps turning off when I'm in the moose or doing jumps

Yeah I've seen those ones! quite cool... I think if my metal one doesn't work out with the signal and all I'll just get one of them as well.
