Hey All,

So I have the Peter Lynn Competition ST buggy and was just wanting a few tips on setup. It's stock standard but I'd love to mod it in the near future but don't want to sink money into things I won't use so first up is the back tires! 99% of my use will be on sand so I was thinking I could probably benefit from extra wide tires on the back. But how exactly do these effect the ride? I'm guessing it will slide a bit easier.

Also if I do get some extra wides for the back do I need to buy new hubs as well? And where can you buy all these goodies?

Thanks, any other tips would be great as well. Cheers.

their are only really two kinds of tyres to worry about, barrow and bigfoot

barrows are what you have already and are good for every aplication exept soft (sanddune) type sand....for soft sand you need bigfoots...their are a few alternatives but everybody who rides in the dunes ends up with bigfoots and thats what you should be looking for aswell.

their are a few hub and tyre combos around and these all come at different prices, so at the end of the day your wallet will make that choice for you anyway...but they all offer the same thing....the ability to float over soft sand, some have more grip than others (grooved tyres) and this is benificial.

you need to speak to perrin at www.kiteworks.co.nz

or gannet
or jimmy22
or guster

as i believe they may have some second hand kit and are all on this forum.

the way the ride is affected is that when you ad bigger tyres the buggy gets heavy, and you notice this straight away but it dosnt matter, it can be better (more grip) for example so you can hold more wind...
but also less agile and flicky...
point is that without bigfoots you cant ride on soft sand so handling changes must be lived with if you want to go riding.
most buggies are getting bigger these days anyway...the exeption is freestyle buggies but they run barows.

some good pictures of different biggies at www.popeyethewelder.com

The obvious answer is to buy a landboard and stand like a man! hehehe.... (waits for the buggy tribe to retaliate).

Sorry i have no actually usefull advice. apart from get some foam and protect your meat and 2 veg. the buggies i see all have gonad tearing bolts a couple of inches away from the pork sword.

it looks like your buggy comes with 12mm rear axle bolts, but check that first because your buggy may not have a standard axle,ie it could have been upgraded already. all of the wheels we use run 20mm axle bolts.
if you have 12mm axle bolts then you would buy some spacers from perrin to upgrade from 12mm to 20mm size
the best advice there would be to upgrade your rear axle to the 20mm version as the bolts are very much stronger.

once the bolt issue is sorted the wheels will bolt straight on to the buggy axle with no problems.

if you wanted to run a front bigfoot wheel then you will also need to upgrade the forks as the little barrow forks will only take barrow tyres.

Yer basic choice is outlined above. I run narrows and the mate I ride with runs wides, I am faster and nippier on the hard stuff and can only do soft stuff at speed (which can be fun......) Mates buggy is quite a bit heavier but gets a wider range of terrain. (I have stuck with narrows koz the buggy fits in the truck. with out dismantling .... and I am a bit hooked on hitting turns at speed on the hard pack)

I started out boarding but mainly buggy now.

Fun whichever way!

The first thing i would do and its pretty cheap to start off is pull the bearings out of those wheels and soak them in thinners give them a good clean and re-pack with new grease. If you do have to change the bears buy the stainless steel one more expensive but last alot long and get them from the bearings place like Saeco. I would also go over the buggy and make sure all the welds are in go order and free from cracks and Corrosion especially on that flat piece that goes over the front wheel on the forks as this has a tendency to crack over time. Also if those hubs are still in good order there no need to change them I have a set on my 11yr old flexi sport buggy and they are still going strong.

As far as big foots and wides go its not just a case of changing the tyres as you will need a new front fork as the old forks weren't made big enough for wides like the new buggies let alone bigfoots tyres. To be honest l wouldn't upgrade the PL MKI to a bigfoot as the steel isn't strong enough and i'll just flex on you until it breaks.

You'll be in a buggy after you've had those knee and hip replacements after all that wear and tear on them from landboarding, then we'll see who stands.
