Yes another good one, had a great time out at Brighton powered on my 12m, Pete on a new 11m, Chris on a 15m, and Fiona on a 16m! I cruised all the way down wind and back to check out the North beach posse, good scene developing down there. Best to watch those fishing lines they cast way out from the pier, been tangled three times now. Anyway the interesting part of the day was later on when I stopped off at the Poo-pond to watch for a bit. Smithy was doing some nice grabbed rotations opposite to those his kite was doing. He came in and so there we were, Smithy, Steve and I standing around watching Pete out lofting. Then Pete comes in close, so I yelled out that I heard him mention that he was going there specifically to learn kiteloops. Peer pressure is an interesting impetus.

I think he's only been on the water a few times at the start of the season... you'd think he would jump low and try a tester spin, new proto kite and all, 40cm bar too. But no, big nads nigel charges in and boosts super high, like really high, rotating several times while he sends the kite into a vicious wide power stroke loop. As he came out of the second rotation I saw he noticed the kite way down low and panicked trying to whip it up sharp. But there was no way it was coming up enough to save his ass. HE GOT PUNG.... landed on his head and stayed put. Stood out there dazed and confused rubbing himself for a fair while, then came up through the car park muttering something about that being "enough entertainment for one day". I reckon he gets ten points for commitment to the cause!

good on you pistola pete! i myself took a solid spanking today at misery bay this very afternoon - much to the delight of an appreciative audience.

seems i landed a big dangle toeside and well lit, and on the next bounce threw a forward 540 with late forward kiteloop, all moving at a fair clip in a big gust on my 8m.

i was already travelling downwind relatively fast with my back to the kite and was commiting my front hand to what is often a straight forward transition, when i was given another injection of energy (caused in part i believe by my original velocity). skidding and rotating on the surface for quite some time was the result - lots of flailing limbs and big splashes i would wager.

when my spinning ceased, i found myself curiously unaffected, dragged for my board and rode back upwind keeping a low profile for a while.

I guess that dunedin's sunday is worth reporting

9:30am the phone rings, wakes me up and I notice the shadows of the tree out the windows is moving, hmmm let me guess it's "Danger" Phil ringing me as usual

off to Middle Beach after scoffing breakfast, three out, Pete G, Danger Phil and me, a 13G, a 16 rhino and me on my trusty 18G. Overhead surf out the back jacking up on a nasty wee sandbar, 15-17 knots of WSW, sunny and and a tricky wee current going downwind. Big runs out the back with all the sunday drivers sitting up on the dunes wondering what these three clowns are up to. Tide came up and made the waves bigger and messier, a few washing machine rinses for all

Good time had by all, nothing broken, much saltwater ingested.

After a lazy lunch off we went down the harbour for a very strange northerly session, wind blowing across the harbour rather than down it where did the sw go???

40knot rain squalls forecast tomorrow, yuk, good day for working I reckon

craig
harbour boosting, sideways buggying, harwood speed gps'ing, sometime kiteskiing, wave/washing machine kiting, gear breaking, driving about chasing the wind....

He's been walking round the house all night mumbling about concusion. Being the supportive bunch we are we replied "Waa". He has treid to have the same conversation with me three times though.... mind you he'll do that on a "normal"* day too.

Chris

*Your value of normal is probably somewhate different to Pete's

Just an update on Mr Weetbix, everyone's favorite high flying breakfast biscuit......STILL WHINING all the way into the next day. This is the side of manly endevour obscured from short blasts in the estuary carpark.
Brighton was, as it always is when it's on, choice!

Where do you Auckland kiters go in a Norwester?
Where is Misery Bay? Whangaparoa? Island Bay?

Meola Reef - although somewhat tidal, great flat water
Pt Chev - a dodgy spt as you will have gathered from other posts
Muriwai Beach - mega surge but large expanses of flat water between the waves, some big air can be had there
Big Manly beach and Stanmore Bay, Whangaparaoa peninsula
Mission Bay, although the launch is tricky if there is much West in the wind, great spot for posing as there are always plenty of people watching the action, probably a bit dangerous in summer as the beach is very busy.
I've never been to Misery or Island Bay's.

Yeah Misery bay is a nickname for Mission Bay. I was also out there yesterday and yes the launch can be tricky in a crossshore, but once out from the beach the wind's sweet as. Good conditions yesterday as the drizzle kept a few spaces vacant in the carpark... this place can get shockingly crowded on a nice day.... I only plan on coming here when i need an 8m kite... or smaller... best when wind is more onshore... windier on the beach then... so less people etc  Can't wait to try this spot at low tide in a NW.... looks nice... it's a good spot, not for beginners though, deep water yesterday, need to be well powered, skills sorted, small kites, lot's of wind etc for guaranteed relaunch of kite if you drop it... oh yes and watch those container ships, they tend to hurt

Mission Bay at low tide... Pt Shred at high tide... although there are other spots that work well these are the most popular places. Pt Chev (Shred) works well in a NW wind... but along with Mission Bay has a rep for accidents and incidents... there are better spots though which are far less crowded.

I've never been to Island Bay or Meola Reef but worth checkin em out with some crew... these spots are popular so chances are other guys will be kiting there... definately not secret spots that's for sure.
