I'm heading over there for two weeks and was wondering if it's worth taking my gear over as there seems to be a lot of coastline around there? Even though i'm still a beginner I just got the hang of things as daylight savings ended and now I want more!

Anyone else been out over there, or know what the airlines are like with extra kiting baggage going over to Oz? Alternately are there any hire places over there that are good?

My bro used to live there and windsurf/kitesurf, I remeber going off to a point at geelong for a sesh by a big smelter/power plant

Take some booties as they have kina/sea eggs there and if you fall off you can stand on them

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Yeah mate, I used to live there...there are some great spots for kiting in the city (ie within 10 minutes of the city centre) but also some great spots down the coast.
1. There is a great spot in Geelong at the back of the Comalco smelter ( as mentioned above) - brilliant in northerlies, Nw or NE and even SE
Flat shallow water which is relatively warm due to the outflow from the smelter (and also the reason that the kinna love it ...booties are a must). You take the road to Geelong and follow the directions to Bellarine, cant miss the smelter off to your left, turn just after the salt ponds. Locals treat this as a bit of a secret spot but hey, how secret can it be if two of us have mentioned it already
2. Torquay- great spot called point danger, cant miss it, just head into town and follow the signs to the beach...works bets in SW and is flat over a reef but also some little waves to kick around in. really busy , ask the locals the deal as launching can be a bit tricky
3. St Kilda beach - in Melbourne, excellent in anything from the South but gets really busy as soon as all the office jockeys finish in the city, check their internet weather station and head to the beach. Can be awesome though
4. Kite Beach - down the road towards Elwood (again ask the locals but its pretty easy to find)
5. Mornington Peninsula - about 1 hour from melbourne, ideal in Easterlies, lots of different beaches down there
6. Ocean Beach at Ocean Grove - good waves and great on a southerly/SW
The airlines have never given me any trouble as long as you travel light
There are a few good shops on the beach road heading towards past Elwood if you need gear and pretty sure they hire also
All the best
