How safe is it to kite at north piha during strong onshore winds? I'm not referring to the waves but more the wind/updrafts etc. I've been told that the waitaks behind the beach cause dangerous updrafts. Does this occur on the beach, in the water or do you have to be silly enough to launch your kite on the road to get lofted?
eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I launched there quite a few times..
The times I have been there its been more cross shore than on shore.
I tend to launch in the middle, close to were the small stream flows out to the sea.

I have had very good sessions at Piha. I never seem to stay upwind though ..

.... probably cos it was really gusty?... Is Piha big enough to work in crossshore conditions?

Its Gusty were ever you go...
Try it out some time.. I have enjoyed it.

You could also ask Kent and Perrin. I know they use to kite at Piha when Muriwai had the bad algae problem.
