Just been out for a kite on the pooie this evening. Was having a grand old time out there pulling a few little back loop kite loops.

Anyway Im pulling the kite through the loop just as Im touching down and pop. #$%! There goes a line!

Now Ive had my fair share of line breaks over the years (7 and counting) but this is just a little wired.

Im winding up the lines when I realize this line is not just broken in one place. The same line has snapped in two places. One break near the bar end and the other break 5cm from the kite end. Im completely missing a good 20m chunk of my steering line.

What is the probability of snapping one line in two different places? Statistically this must be nearly impossible!!!

And just to make matters worse a front line blew its ring out too! Anyone got some spare twine?

I had this happen about 4 years ago on my 840 ARC - the line broke at both pig tails - I lost ALL 25m of one side line.

It is weird - you'd think it would be impossible for the line to break in two places at the same time.

Cheers,

They were north lines, new this season.

BTW I Really havent been happy with the north lines and new de-power system. That chunky new jam cleat they brought out this season is a load of junk. Worked for about 6- 7 sessions until it started to wear out and wouldn't de-power.

Got a replacement one which did exactly the same thing a week later. Tried putting the new recommended rope through it too which made squat all difference.

I was dubious about the North bar / line system before I bought it. Now I know for sure, Never again!!!

The North kites are great but they've got to do some work at the bar end.

Far out, I've broken two lines in my short time kiting, but no way were they in the same split second interval! They were Naish lines, old style bar/lines from first Aero kites, ha guess I deserved it.

For yours break in two places at once means the lines must have been exactly equally worn in those two places. Cos you'd think when one end breaks all the tension in the line is gone so the only thing that'd cause a break at the kite end is the weight of the line itself. Not likely.

Both my lines broke by the bar end of the line, both during dropping kite for taking off. Once at takas, other at shoal. Cause? Apart from obvious old age, I'm thinking it may be because the bar end of the line over it's life gets more wet than kite end of the line, ie falling off board, body dragging etc. Whereas kite end of line only gets wet when kite hits water. Could it be that kitelines wear quicker when salty and wet then dry out with salt caked into them? Wouldn't think so but may be a contributor.

Also does anyone out there swap their lines around? Like tyres on a car?
I'm thinking front lines get constant force the whole time, but back get hard yanks in kiteloops etc, maybe swapping them round could give longer life. Even swapping the orientation of the line eg kite end of line to bar end.

I've now got Rhino 05 bar/lines (5th element) and they are insane, I love them to bits. The lines are mint, had no problems there, and the depower strap is quite good too. To depower the kite however it does require the kite to have a lot of power in it, else you pull the strap and it just pulls on the front lines. So when in light wind on my 16m i gotta hold the front lines with one hand and pull depower with another. Also the power loop on the bottom of the bar for holding the bar sheeted in, I have broken three of them. I've given up on them now and just hold the bar in, good for my arm strength I guess..

So you reckon 06 bar/lines aren't the goer at this stage?
Without getting into a review on North kites, could you say if you've had any problems with the cambattons? Snapping? Piercing the kite?

Cheers
Reuben.

Dude those cleats allways wear out. I have the same problem on my hydro... they work for a few sessions then the teeth get blunt and don't grip anymore. These things are alloy so softer than steel. Tried the marine shops but no stainless ones available.
eastern beach hates my guts because i did a big crap in my wetsuit whilst out there kiting 6 years ago. That's why i'm the most unpopular kiter in NZ. Beast from da east reprazent mutha f#$$%@ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey ive got the new north bar t00. after a while the cleat doesnt grip aswell, but if you look on the 2nd shipment of the bars the cleat now has a bungie around the cleat that locks the rope in the cleat and stops it from sliping. its pretty easy to put it on the the ones that dont have it.
