Recently I noticed a new keeler moored at the end of the sandspit. Now I'm still in that learning phase where I'm not necessarily in full control all of the time. That boat and the others moored downwind of the sandspit could pose a hazard to my health!
I would also suggest that the numbers of wind surfers and kite boarders using Shoal Bay for recreational purposes would far outweigh the number of boats moored. Under the Resource Management Act I/we are effected party. I believe the Auckland Habour Bourd has jurisdiction over the mooring of boats.
I would like to see what avenue we have to remove all the boats moored in this area.

First does anyone else have an issue with this, or not?
Secondly does anyone know how we could go about having the moorings removed- legally.

sounds like a damn good idea to me - those moorings should be moved up to bayswater or the owners should have to spring for a berth @ the marina like everyone else - that'd make them re-assess owning such decrepit old tubs and parking in them in one of the best little flat water spots for kiting!

Re: Removal of Shoal Bay Moorings 8 years, 6 months ago #739

leave well enough alone I say. I like the fact that the yahts keep the less experienced riders out of the butter water. much rather deal with a stationary object than a out of control T-bagger.
besides the boats have been there for years.... kiters just 2 to 3 years. a more likely outcome to your request is that the reponsible authority will ban kiteboarders from the spot
nothing against biggenners i'm all for them... but some spots simply are not suitable

Trust me, don't go there.

The locals in that area want Kite boarders and windsurfers banned now.
(They have tried a couple of times already)
Because we make to much noise in front of there houses and make it look all unsitley on a good day.

I know the two moorings by our shop (Bayswater Windsports) are not ment to be used full time. They were just for boats waiting to go up on a hard stand that used to be there some years ago, but some guy now pays to use both moorings (he swaps around once a month) to the boat club I think.
But if people wanted him gone they could have him removed no worries as they are not even tested nowadays.

So you could look in to finding out if the ones by the sand bar were ment to be full time or just part time moorings ? ((There not tested either))

But just watch opening a big can of worms up. It could get real ulgy really quickly.

Good Luck

Its just a matter of time before some one splits there pip on one of those yachts.
It is pretty cool riding through them.. but for beginners is a hazard !!

I am all for getting them moved if possible.

There are also a few under water sharp steel rods that should have boys on them.
Some one is going to land on one of them some day and its going to be VERY MESSY.

good point about the stakes. a few keen guys at low tide could clear this up. as for the boats would have to agree with guest and Pat... leave it .
if your not confident, I mean very confident, around the boats then stay the hell away!

Re: Removal of Shoal Bay Moorings 8 years, 6 months ago #745

True.. I dont see how the local houses can ban us from using this spot as it is public domain but it is always better to work with the locals than against them.
However smacking there dogs over the head with you boards is OK as they crap all over the rigging area..

If you are still learning you should stay away from the yachts !!
We would hate to have you damage one of them !!

If some one has a electric drill I dont mind going out at low tide and placing some boys over the metal spikes.
Does any one have old boys or floats ?
We should really get this sorted out before some one gets hurt.

would rather take a hack saw and cut them off or a spade and dig them out. a bouy would help but they end up getting lost and at lower tide (when your most in danger of hurting your self on a stake) the bouy will be several metres away from the obstacle. a bouy may make you aware of the obstical but it won't stop you from being impaled

Get over it ! These boats have been there a Long time and there is plenty of room to ride, If u want real flat water conditions in a southwester there are plenty of better options !! Besides u can get ur jollys by boosting over the masts on those 30 kt days and if u can't or won't do that then Stay upwind of them ! or go find the heaps of better places there are to learn.

Digging them out..
Well if any one has a crane please let me know

Hack saw.. This will have to be done over a few months by some one with very good heart. It a chunky block !!

I do agree with the boy being a problem as it wont show the exact area of the cluster. Infact boys are normally used for ramping over..

How about we plant a tree ?

Madness, why don't you give me a call at the end of the week and we can have a look and try and make it a safer place. I'm busy as at the Go Beyond Adventure Show this weekend and dismantling on the Monday so the end of the week would be good for me as I'll also need time to catch up as well.

Give me a call any way.

Hi Pat.

Sounds good.
I work in town during the week.
If you have time over next weekend we can try and sort some thing out.
I am not sure what time low tide is but it should be low enough over one of the days.

You should still have my number. ( I brought in the Kite Surfing Revolution DVDs ).

While you boys are out there in your gum boots with your tool boxes, why not build us a rail slide?? Always wanted to try one out... and that is the perfect shit hole to put one as its so ugly no-one would care about it.

Plus while removing the boats, hazards and neighbours, could you do something about the oysters?

I agree with other guest, the place sux, if you guys don't like it the way it is and always has been, go somewhere else.

i have deleted that last anonymous post as every sentence was abusive in some way.

none of it constructively dealt with the issue raised.

Hey what's shoal Bay really like?? Feedback from my mates who have kited there is that's really gusty... by looking at the beach and launch it's seems that you have to get out into the channel or else it's offshore! Looks like I'll have to come up there and jump the odd boat or two..... and entertain you guys by impaling myself on the supposed spikes
